Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968. -

As the narrator intones, “Once a young girl has been loved by a lesbian, it’s difficult to feel satisfaction from a man again.” –Thurs, Oct 3 at 7:30. TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry. -

Max Steiner and Delmer Daves : New Arrangement of the Music by Bill Wrobel In late October 2017, I created a special arrangement of music by Max Steiner of his Delmer Daves-directed scores. I was inspired by knowledge of the upcoming Max Steiner Symposium ("Max Steiner: Man & Myth") at Cal State University Long Beach that is scheduled for the final weekend of February 2018 (Sat-Sun Feb 24-25). http://www.musicologie.org/17/max_steiner_man_and_myth.html By the way, I understand that Steven Spielberg's favorite composer (or one of them) is Max Steiner. Spielberg also went to school at CSULB (where the Symposium is being held). As Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame would comment, "Interesting......" I created the new arrangements out of joy of creative exercise based on my research of the scores. I playfully asked myself that if a concert was planned at the Symposium, then wouldn't it be fun to have new arrangements of Max music designed on a budget? At the very least, one can have simply a piano (or harp, preferably) and a solo violin and solo cello, adding a flute and maybe even a guitar. These can be played by college students. Of course a full string performance with ample woodwinds & brass (and harp) would be a far better treatment of Steiner music but we're talking about a realistic short free concert on a budget. The Herrmann Symposium or Festival in Georgetown in mid-April 2016 had about two dozen players for their concert (see image in the link below). I believe the professional players may've donated their services for the free event but I do not know. -

It started with The Hanging Tree rundown that was put online January 12th (along with my Americana Music of Bernard Herrmann papers). Lindsay Giggey 2008‐09 ARSC Research Award Submission Surf, Song, and Cricket Blake: Capturing the Emerging Teen Girl Market with Hawaiian Eye As America progressed from the post‐war era into the sixties, the idea of teenagers solidified itself within popular culture. Job opportunities during World War II drove young people into the workforce establishing independence from their families and created a new purchasing demographic. Post‐war America’s abundant prosperity increased leisure time and allowed more young people to enroll in high school. Mass high school enrollment created new social opportunities and further alienated parents from their teenagers. The population skyrocketed as a result of the baby boom, and as the 1960s began, almost half the American population was under twenty‐five years old.1 By this time, teenagers asserted themselves as independent consumers with time and money to indulge in music, movies, clothes, cars, and whatever else interested them. Further compounded by America’s fascination with youth (especially President Kennedy and his family), advertisers finally noticed the massive but previously untapped market with time and money at their disposal. Advertisers found that young people could easily be swayed to follow fads and continuously consume more goods. They guided gullible young people towards products to substitute for knowledge or reassurance they could not receive from their ignorant parents.2 By the late 1950s, television networks followed suit by developing programming more inclusive of young people. During its first two decades, ABC featured more teen Giggey 2 programming as a ploy to establish itself as a viable network in competition with CBS and NBC. -

There is not a great deal of Steiner music in this film but several sequences are quite interesting, especially his self-borrowing in the Main Title (from SHE). (2) DISTANT TRUMPET. Fabulous late vintage Steiner. (3) DARBY's RANGER. One of Steiner's best scores in the Fifties. (4) THE COMMAND. Wonderful action (and moody) music by Dimitri Tiomkin. A real treat starring Guy Madison. (5) CLOSE TO MY HEART. Easy listening Steiner. (6) ADVENTURES Of MARK TWAIN. Americana Steiner. (7) CROWDED SKY. Wow! I haven't seen this movie in many, many years.
