Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968. -

Shot in Central Park, Times Square, the Village, and elsewhere, A BRIDE FOR BRENDA narrates (quite literally – the story is told via female-voiced omniscient narration rather than dialogue) the experiences of NYC-neophyte Brenda as she moves into an apartment with Millie and Jane. These apparently unremarkable roommates soon prove themselves to be flesh-hungry lesbians, spying on Brenda as she undresses, attempting to seduce her, and making her forget all about her paramour Nick (and his partners in masculinity). As the narrator intones, “Once a young girl has been loved by a lesbian, it’s difficult to feel satisfaction from a man again.” –Thurs, Oct 3 at 7:30. TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry. -

Peyton Place ( 1957), A Summer Place (1959), From the Terrace (1960), Splendor in the Grass (1961), and Rome Adventure (1962) fit the b ill. These movies didn ' t address bedroom problems head on (they left that distinction to the lurid Baby Doll [195 6 ] ). These pictures were elegant and exciting. Years later the sub - genre went off the rails with pictures like Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (19 69) and Carnal Knowledge (1971). The ultimate desti nation for romance and sex stopped being marriage, and once that was dismissed nothing could satisfy. Parrish is one of the best of the sexual - awakening reviva l. It is fitfully hokey, and t h e titular ch aracter ' s easy success with women produces, alternately, derision and envy; but the story is compelling. Parrish is a young man without a father eager to take on the world, eager to live life on his own terms. After a while he stops seeking the freedom t o do what he likes, and instead seeks the freedom to do what is right. -

Max Steiner and Delmer Daves : New Arrangement of the Music by Bill Wrobel In late October 2017, I created a special arrangement of music by Max Steiner of his Delmer Daves-directed scores. I was inspired by knowledge of the upcoming Max Steiner Symposium ("Max Steiner: Man & Myth") at Cal State University Long Beach that is scheduled for the final weekend of February 2018 (Sat-Sun Feb 24-25). http://www.musicologie.org/17/max_steiner_man_and_myth.html By the way, I understand that Steven Spielberg's favorite composer (or one of them) is Max Steiner. Spielberg also went to school at CSULB (where the Symposium is being held). As Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame would comment, "Interesting......" I created the new arrangements out of joy of creative exercise based on my research of the scores. I playfully asked myself that if a concert was planned at the Symposium, then wouldn't it be fun to have new arrangements of Max music designed on a budget? At the very least, one can have simply a piano (or harp, preferably) and a solo violin and solo cello, adding a flute and maybe even a guitar. These can be played by college students. Of course a full string performance with ample woodwinds & brass (and harp) would be a far better treatment of Steiner music but we're talking about a realistic short free concert on a budget. The Herrmann Symposium or Festival in Georgetown in mid-April 2016 had about two dozen players for their concert (see image in the link below). I believe the professional players may've donated their services for the free event but I do not know. -

Film Score Blogs [Blog # 53] Thursday, February 9, 2016 [7 pm] From January 14th until today (February 5) I have been steadily worked on my newest project of doing a major overhaul of my original Film Score Rundowns site. It started with The Hanging Tree rundown that was put online January 12th (along with my Americana Music of Bernard Herrmann papers). In that old rundown, I inserted images of the written music I hand-copied plus scenes of the movie, posters, and additional material of interest related to the particular rundown. Film Score Blogs [Blog # 48] Saturday, March 8, 2014 8:45 am]: This first entry read here by viewers is actually the final one I am writing for this blog in order to header set the time & date for the freshest entry. After that you'll be reading blogs from earlier entries eventually reaching up to this March 8 date. I wrote at length yesterday (March 7) so I have no fresh news this morning. I intend to send off this blog and Chord Profile # 10 (On Dangerous Ground) to Sarah in a few minutes to finally update this original FSR site after a long delay of 15 and a half months! I am retired now from the USPS after about 30 years so I've been spending time on researching--primarily now at Usc/Warner Bros. Archives off 37th & Flower. It's the easiest film score location for me since it is only about 22 miles from my house. If I rent a car I can go on the 405 north to 110 north and get off on 37th street, and it's right there immediately to my right as I get off the freeway ramp! Lately I've been taking the bus and Metro Blue rail to get there. The transportation takes longer (about an hour and 15 minutes) but it's a lot cheaper than renting a car! I take the local bus in my city to the Blue Line station, take the Blue Line up to the Pico Station, walk a few blocks to Figuerora there at Staples Center, and wait for the Metro 81 bus southbound and get off at Exposition.
