  • Urbanization of the Siliguri Town: Understanding the Transformation from Union Board to Municipal Corporation (1915-1994)
Karatoya: NBU J. Hist. Vol. 11 ISSN: 2229-4880 Urbanization of the Siliguri town: Understanding the transformation from Union Board to Municipal Corporation (1915-1994) Dr. Sudip Khasnobish 11 Abstract : Siliguri situated in the foothills of the Himalayas and about eight hundred and forty two feet above the sea level is now a part of the district of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal .During the colonial period there were three police stations under Siliguri sub- division i.e Siliguri, Phansidewa and Khoribari. Siliguri is termed as the uncrowned capital of Northern part of Bengal popularly known as North Bengal. Some notable scholars and academicians have contributed in the studies of urbanization of Darjeeling hill town and very few academic works have been done. The focus was largely on the growing commercial activities of Siliguri after post- partition era. Certain areas of study have not been touched. The proposed article intends to understand the various issues or factors which transformed Siliguri from a sleepy hamlet to a Municipal Corporation within a very short period during 20 th century and to find out the importance of its strategic geographical location in the context of ongoing Indo-Chinese conflict after Doklam. Key Words: Sikkim, Battrish Hazari, Raikat, zamindar, Siliguri, railway, Bangladesh, Municipality , S.J.D.A., jotes, wards, Committee, tea. Introduction: Siliguri was a village in the south of Kurseong sub-division near the left bank of the river Mahananda constituting 748 souls in 1901. The village was situated on fairly high ground and its name meant the “the stony site”, presumably because the bed of the Mahananda which is close by is a mass of broken stone brought down from the hills.

  • The Sannyasi Intrigue and the British Encounter
IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 22, Issue 10, Ver. III (October. 2017) PP 41-49 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org The Cooch Behar Imbroglio in the Late Eighteenth Century: The Sannyasi Intrigue and the British Encounter Tahiti Sarkar Assistant Professor Department of History Raiganj University, West Bengal ABSTRACT: The article attempts to explore the intricacies of the conflicts between the Sannyasis and the East India Company on the issue of succession to the throne of the Cooch Behar state- a tiny kingdom located at the far east of Bengal bordering Bhutan and AssamIt highlights a micro-specific event having organic significance for the writing of the macro history of the period that occurred inthe early years of colonization. The specific event hadtaken place at such a historical juncture, when the EIC concluded two important Treaties in 1772 and 1773 with Cooch Behar and Bhutan respectively. The pre modern society, under the leadership of the tribal chieftain, was famine stricken, ridden by family feuds, and was witnessing the dwindling Mughal Empire and the initial rise of imperial expansion. The European notion of knowledge and wisdom, science and governance was just in its gestation. British administrative and legal encounters especially on the land revenues system made much headway in the Indian society and Cooch Behar was no exception. The role of the Sannyasis at a particular micro space has been reread in this article keeping in mind the evolving perspectives arising out of such politico-economic and social upheavals. Key Words: Micro and Macro History,Sannyasis and Fakirs Rebellions; Colonial Encounters,Cooch Behar State, Governability Crisis; European Notion of Knowledge, Political Economy of Pre-Modern Society.

  • Rural and Tribal Development
CHAPTER-IX RURAL AND TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT Developmental Challenges in Early Years Soon after independence, both the Central and State government of Odisha implemented various poverty alleviation and public welfare Programmes for improving the standard of living of common people with focus on the poor, the marginalized, the handicapped, socially under privileged and other weaker sections like women, children and senior citizens. Free India began its journey towards progress as an underdeveloped economy. Primarily agrarian in nature, over 70 percent of people seek employment and sustenance in the agriculture and allied sectors. Further, various Programmes/ schemes were also drawn up to change the face of the rural and urban people and backward areas with improved health facilities, better and useful education, all weather connectivity through surface transport, safe potable drinking water ,electricity, sanitation and solid waste management, food security, and other social welfare measures. By working collectively, significant changes have been registered in the socio-economic scenario of Deogarh district in all aspects of development in the rural sector. Civil society groups like Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs), Pani Panchayats, Joint Forest Management Committees have set marvellous trends and examples in ushering desired results. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) The MGNREGS is a scheme which has been implemented in every state of India through the Central Act known as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarante Act of 2005.The erstwhile National Rural Employment Programme (NREP) and National Food for Work Programme (NFFWP) Programmes have been subsumed in MGNREGA from 2nd February, 2006.
