June 2012 Introduction I am pleased to introduce our summary of the Bristol Avon Catchment Flood Management Plan (CFMP). This CFMP gives an overview of the flood risk in the Bristol Avon catchment and sets out our preferred plan for sustainable flood risk management over the next 50 to 100 years. The Bristol Avon CFMP is one of 77 CFMPs for England The Bristol Avon catchment has a history of flood risk, and Wales. Through the CFMPs, we have assessed and over the last 60 years numerous engineering inland flood risk across all of England and Wales for the schemes have been implemented to reduce flood risk first time. The CFMP considers all types of inland in the catchment. At present 7,000 properties are at risk flooding, from rivers, ground water, surface water and in the catchment in a 1% event. -

The study is documented in this report and includes the following: • Preliminary ecological baseline of the site; • Potential ecological constraints to the development of the site; • Assessment of the site in terms of suitability for development; and • Further ecological work necessary for a planning submission. All work has been undertaken in accordance with the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s (IEEM) Code of Practice. 1.2 Approach A preliminary understanding of the ecological baseline of the development site (hereafter referred to as ‘the site’) was derived through desk study and site survey. -

Bath and North East Somerset Council approved a plan for the area that predicts an over 50% growth in our village up to 2029. Brislington The place-name Brislington is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means “Beorhthelm’s Farmstead”, with Beorhthelm being an Old English personal name (Mills 1998,56) Brook A natural freshwater stream that is smaller than a river St Anne’s Wood The steep sided semi-ancient woodland probably named after the pilgrimage site Nightingale Valley “Miss Alma Coombs remembers the warm evenings in her childhood when sitting with her friends on the wall at the top of Nightingale Valley, they listened to the song of the Nightingale and the notes of the Nightjar.” p. 51-52 of St Anne’s Bristol a History by Evelyn Winchester (1986, White Tree Books) 1 Introduction .................................................................................................................. Brislington Brook runs through Nightingale Valley in Brislington and offers the perfect location for outdoor study. It is one of Bristol’s best kept secrets and it’s incredibly accessible for junior schools in St Anne’s, St Anne’s Park, Broomhill and Brislington village. The Brook is a hidden gem. It is set in a well-established broadleaved woodland with mature and semi-mature trees and shrubs filling much of the steep and wide valley. As well as its great environmental value as a wildlife corridor, the Brook has a fascinating history, the remains of which are evident everywhere; ranging from St Anne’s Holy Well, a 13th century pilgrimage site, to the remnants of a Victorian pleasure garden. In 2011, the Brislington Community Partnership received three-year funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Bristol City Council for an exciting new community project, Discover Brislington Brook. -

Today, 54% of the world’s population live in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66% within 30 years. These towns and cities also face ageing and sometimes over-stressed infrastructure, exacerbated by the prospect of a changing climate and rising sea levels. This combination could not only cause significant human and economic losses during severe events such as flooding, heatwaves and droughts but could also pose challenges in day to day urban living. RESCCUE (RESilience to cope with Climate Change in Urban arEas - a multisectorial approach focusing on water), Europe’s first large-scale innovation and urban resilience project, was conceived to improve urban resilience: the capability of cities to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant environmental and climatic threats with minimum damage. This 4 year project, concluding in 2020, has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, under the Grant Agreement number 700174. Whilst the main goal of the RESCCUE project is to help urban areas around the world become more resilient to the impacts of climate change (and coastal, river & urban drainage flooding in particular), some of the principles, tools and processes could be applied to other physical, social and economic challenges. Cities, being complexes of interdependent systems, cannot be understood by single-sector and single-discipline approaches alone. -
Bristol Floating Harbour Recreational Water Profile
BRISTOL FLOATING HARBOUR RECREATIONAL WATER PROFILE Bathing water profiles are a requirement of the revised EU Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC and supporting regulations. The Floating Harbour is not designated as a bathing water because it is a multi-use area that includes navigation and flood defence. Swimming is prohibited through the bye-laws, however since the Harbour is widely used for recreational purposes throughout the year Bristol City Council has produced a profile for users. Advice for event organisers is available from the Harbour Office. The profile gives information about the water, pollution sources and improvements made to provide better water quality for all users. BRISTOL FLOATING HARBOUR, England Local Authority: Bristol City Council Environment Agency Region: Wessex; Lower Bristol Avon Bristol City Council monitors and assesses the recreational water quality of Bristol Floating Harbour, throughout the year. The monitoring results are published on Bristol City Council’s website at http://www.bristol.gov.uk/page/water-quality www.bristol.gov.uk Recreational Water Map Recreational Water Description Bristol Floating Harbour is located in the heart of Bristol’s urban centre. It is a large man-made standing body of water fed by the River Avon and retained by lock gates at Cumberland Basin and Netham Lock. The harbour is predominantly fresh water with minimal saline intrusion from spring tides and locking operations at Junction Lock. The Floating Harbour is used for widespread recreational purposes throughout the year by various recreational clubs such as sailing, rowing, fishing and canoeing. Swimming in the harbour is strictly prohibited, unless special permission is obtained from the Harbour Master in advance.
