Bill called in sick with a urinary tract infection which sounds bad to me (never having had one) and is apparently worse. He's feeling better than he was now that the antibiotics are helping but we're not sure when the Giant will be back on the road. Also on the subject of sickness, Alex has been fitted with a pacemaker so we can expect bionic performances from him when he's back with us. So with Bill being on the sofa with a cup of tea, you're having to make do with my idea of what today's faster ride was like. When people are being asked to lead a ride, I always like to say that the format is "entirely up to you - as fast or as slow as you like, up as many hills as you like." Some look for a flat route, some take a leisurely approach with maybe a stop for a cultural interlude. Martyn was leading today, so it was likely we'd be at the faster end of the spectrum. Steve had arranged a less intense ride for any sensible people turning up at Mangotsfield station, and he had a few takers. So a group of maybe fifteen or sixteen left in the direction of Pucklechurch. Before the village Chris Hume realised he'd thought today's pace would be the normal Thursday pace (what a mistake) and turned back. After climbing the Hinton bypass Mike Sennett realised he'd also made the same mistake and decided to make his own way to Bradford on Avon.

As we enter May, the weather forecast is still suggesting we can expected frost, meaning our conservatory and any available window sills are home to a collection of rapidly- growing bedding plants. They enjoy the odd day outdoors, and even stay out overnight if the forecast is amenable, but I’ve not yet been brave enough to plant them in the garden. Hopefully the plants won’t develop an aversion to outdoor living, unlike my sister’s rabbit which realised life in a nice warm house was much preferable to being stuck in a cold hutch at the bottom of the garden. It provided my sister with much-needed company and a sympathetic ear, but blotted its copy book when it started chewing through cables. The phone line was its favourite, which it severed on numerous occasions. It only got half way though a mains cable though before it learned a very valuable lesson. It’s safe to say it never did that (or anything else) again. May is when we can traditionally look forward to those summer events we all look forward to taking place, such as the village fetes, country fairs and outdoor music events that are always so popular.

    News for August 2019 Thursday 1st August 2019 Severn Bridge to Redwick: After the intense heat last week on our ride to Clevedon conditions were much more favourable today. Still bright but just a nice temperature, very little wind and every chance of staying dry all day for the twenty one starters at the Severn Bridge looking forward to a ride to the Rose Inn at Redwick. As usual, two rides were on offer and Bill's hillier route attracted thirteen of the hard riders. Main group report from Bill Balchin: When we put together the current rides schedule, I asked Phil to leave me off the list of leaders. I explained that my creative juices for devising routes had all but dried up, plus it is increasingly difficult to turn round and check behind. So time to step down to allow in some new blood. BUT, I wanted today's ride to Redwick to be my swansong. This has everything that I like for a cycle ride – practically all on small country lanes through pleasant scenery and a less testing homeward section. The fact that it contains a lot of ups (where I get a boost from an electric motor) and downs (where I let gravity do the work) is just a bonus. With Peter T signed up on back marking duties we spent the next three and a half miles crossing the bridge and riding up to the Mounton Road turn where we finally got onto the small stuff. We had three lady riders in the group today, Moira, Shirley and Maggie on her first trip into Wales on a bike.
