INTRODUCTION In last few years, HEIs have undergone various changes as contemporary labour market has requested improved quality of education that is aligned with demands of society. Internalisation represents one of the key mechanism for improving HEI’s performance since it pushes HEIs to incorporate intercultural, international, global, etc dimensions that reflect performance improvement. Universities are now competing for international visibility of their educational, scientific research and socially responsible achievements, opening the door to various international integrations and cooperation in the fields of education, science and research, exchanges of students, teachers, researchers, co-programming. In order to focus more on the internationality of the University of Montenegro (UoM) in all respects, its openness, vision and mission, we prepared the Internationalisation Strategy as a guidance document for achieving international openness and excellence of the UoM. 2. THE STARTING POINT OF THE INTERNATIONALISATION STRATEGY The starting point of the Internationalisation Strategy is based on the overall Strategy of UoM 2019-2024*. https://www.ucg.ac.me/skladiste/blog_4/objava_40/fajlovi/Strategy%20of%20the%20University%20of%20Mo ntenegro%202019_2024.pdf 2.1 Vision UoM is a competitive and internationally recognized higher education institution in European Higher Education Area and European Research Area. 2.2 Mission UoM has a key role and responsibility to create and spread knowledge through its excellence in education, science, and creativity to improve international cooperation, to create successful and socially responsible university graduates, and to promote the democratic and sustainable development of the Montenegrin society and state. 3. OVERVIEW OF CURRENT STATE OF INTERNATIONALISATION 3.1 Internationalisation of education UoM is continuously expanding the network of its partners by signing bilateral agreements on cooperation, be it at the central level or at the level of individual university units. In the period 2017-2020 UoM has concluded 30 new agreements in total. There are 63 study programs at BSc level, 72 at MSc level and 25 at PhD level. Among them, there are no programmes carried out in English language. For this reason international students have individual classes with professors or mentors. However, most of the faculties 3 offer up to 5 courses per study program in English to both international and domestic students (“internationalisation at home”) in the event when all domestic students in each class accept English as major language for that course, stipulated by Montenegrin Constitution. There are two agreements for double degree diplomas, one with the University of Tours in Tours, France, in the field of French literature and language and the second with the University Cote d’Azur in Nice, France, in the field of economics. There were no new international accreditations in last 3 years. However, a Certificate of compliance with on IMO’s (International Maritime Organisation) Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) was issued to Maritime faculty Kotor for its BSc study programs (Navigation and sea transportation, Marine engineering and Marine electro-technics), by the Croatian Register of Shipping, member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). 3.2 Internationalisation of mobility UoM is committed to increasing international student mobility and creating opportunities for exchange of knowledge and skills. Students, teaching and administrative staff are increasingly using the opportunities for exchange offered within several programmes, the most popular being Erasmus + and CEEPUS programme. Through Erasmus + programme the UoM is also beginning to provide opportunities for students to do practical training abroad. Students, teaching and administrative staff can apply for exchange in the frame of 120 inter-institutional agreements for credit mobility within Erasmus + programme. UoM Strategy 2019-2024 envisages intensifying of cooperation with renowned higher education institutions through increase in the number of universities it cooperates with within the programme of international credit mobility, and establishment of wider support for outgoing and incoming mobility. 3.2.1 International students and incoming student mobility The number of degree seeking international students remains low and stable. In academic year 2017/2018, 331 international students were enrolled at the UoM, while in 2019/2020 the number was 305. Most of the international students are coming from the region of former 4 Yugoslavia since there are no language barriers for them. UoM does not attract international students from other regions due to the fact that there are no study programmes in English language. The share of international students enrolled in relation to the total number of active students enrolled still represents negligible share. The history of the CNR participation in Montenegro is very recent.     PICTURE STORY Post-modern Nation Montenegro one year after independence September 2007 Post-modern Nation Montenegro one year after independence With its mountainous geography and turbulent history Montenegro is a small Balkan. It is Europe's youngest state, gaining independence in summer 2006. Since then it has not been in the news much. This is in itself remarkable for a country that was once feared to turn into a failed state in a troubled region. Throughout its history Montenegro was known in Europe for its fierce tribes and blood feuds. For centuries Muslim (Ottoman) and Catholic (Venice and Austria) Empires met on its territory. However, in recent years Montenegro surprised those who expected that it would be torn apart by internal conflict. Montenegro was the only one of the six former Yugoslav republics that managed to avoid all violent conflict on its territory since 1989. It is a country without an ethnic majority, two Orthodox churches and no agreed name for the language most of its people speak. The national currency of independent Montenegro is the Euro. Its 620,000 citizens are Orthodox Montenegrins and Orthodox Serbs, Muslim Bosniaks, Catholic and Muslim Albanians, as well as some Croats and other minorities. Upon re-establishing statehood, Montenegro drastically downsized the armed forces it inherited from the joint state with Serbia to 2,500 and destroyed all except one of its 62 tanks. The adjective “wild” is no longer used to scare away potential invaders but to attract tourists. In recent months ESI has taken a closer look at this post-modern nation, from the mountainous North to the Adriatic coastline, to see what independence has brought.

Morozova Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburg, Russia [email protected] Abstract The purpose of this article is to study the linguistic evidence of Slavic-Albanian lan- guage contact in the kinship terminology of the Mrkovići, a Muslim Slavic-speaking group in southern Montenegro, and to demonstrate how it refers to the social con- text and the kind of contact situation. The material for this study was collected during fieldwork conducted from 2012 to 2015 in the villages of the Mrkovići area. Kinship terminology of the Mrkovići dialect is compared with that of bcms, Albanian, and the other Balkan languages and dialects. Particular attention is given to the items borrowed from Albanian and Ottoman Turkish, and to the structural borrowing from Albanian. Information presented in the article will be of interest to linguists and anthropologists who investigate kinship terminologies in the world’s languages or do their research in the field of Balkan studies with particular attention to Slavic-Albanian contact and bilingualism.     THE ENIGMA OF MONTENEGRIN HISTORY-THE EXAMPLE OF SVAČ JAMES PETTIFER AND AVERIL CAMERON In most periods of Montenegrin history, the coast has been of the greatest significance, from the original ancient traders and colonists who ventured north to found colonial settlements, and throughout the Roman and Byzantine periods. Coastal trade and associated military shipping were what mattered, whether under the Roman and Byzantine empires, the Angevin conquests of the Adriatic in the Middle Ages, or the Venetians. Yet the object of this history has been very little known, or visited. For long periods, Montenegro and Montenegrins did not impinge on the wider European consciousness as either a state or a people. In the nineteenth century, when the first Montenegrin state emerged after the Congress of Berlin in 1878, it was wrapped in a romantic mythology of mountain life that distorted its real history. The emergence of the new country after the May 2006 independence referendum is likely to bring renewed debate about these issues.1 A coastal site such as little known Svač, near the most southern Montenegrin town of Ulcinje, illustrates this process. The isolation of Svač and its near-disappearance is a paradigm of twentieth-century and Cold War border impositions. It illustrates both the complex interfaces on borders, where culture, religion and popular memory interact and often collide, and the difficulties historians face, given the extreme paucity of archaeological work in many places in the non-Greek Balkan lands.2 There has been almost no sustained archaeological work or scientific survey of the site, as is also the case with many others in Montenegro.

The meeting was incredibly interesting and could lead to a number of productive collaborations. Indeed, collaboration seems to be the theme of this past academic year. Over the past year, VCS students and faculty have been involved in a number of collaborative projects—through the President’s Humanities Project, the Mellon-funded Central New York Humanities Corridor, and initiatives at the George Eastman House, the Memorial Art Gallery, and the Rochester Contemporary (RoCo). Intellectually this has been another exhilarating year. David Joselit delivered the Craig Owens’ Memorial Lecture, entitled “Art and Life: Toward an Ethics of Images.” Steve Kurtz inaugurated the graduate-student speaker’s series with a standing-room only talk on his work, and Mark Hostler of Negativland gave a multimedia presentation in collaboration with the Anthropology department. Next weekend we are hosting a two-day event on the topic of Visual Memories featuring keynote talks and symposium by Tom Gunning, Andreas Huyssen, Walid Raad, and Sasha Torres. It should be excellent. Next year’s incoming class is once again full of exceptional students. We had a record number of applications this year and accepted five new students.
