In response, many patient safety and quality initiatives were launched to make health care safer in the United States and globally. More recently, James (2013) identified evidence suggesting that a more accurate estimate of deaths from preventable errors is 200,000 to 400,000 per year. There is no question that the health-care delivery system is undergoing major changes related to safety and quality. Nurses at all levels and in all settings have been identified as key to transforming health care to a safer, higher-quality, and more effective system. Front-line nurses are being charged with taking leadership and management roles in transforming care at the bedside. Nurse educators must prepare a new generation of nurses to step into these roles as well as manage safe and effective patient care. To that end, this book was written to provide a comprehensive approach to preparing nurses in the critical knowledge, skills, and attitudes in leadership and management needed for the current and future health-care environment. This book is built on the premise that all nurses are leaders and managers re- gardless of their position or setting in which they work. First-level or front-line nursing leaders and managers are those leading and managing care of a patient or groups of patients at the bedside and clients or groups in the community. This level may also include charge nurses, patient care managers, and supervisors. Second-level nursing leaders and managers are those holding a formal position in the system such as unit manager. Their responsibilities include leading and managing material, economic, and human resources necessary for the care of a group of patients, as well as clients or groups in the community. The third-level nursing leaders and managers are those holding a formal position in the organi- zation such as a director over several units and whose responsibilities are similar to those of the second level manager but encompass a broader scope. The fourth level or executive level includes nursing leaders and managers in positions such as chief nursing officer (CNO) or Vice President of Nursing Services. Their re- sponsibilities include administering nursing units within the mission and goals of the organization. Finally, many nurse leaders and managers hold positions outside direct care delivery such as nurses in academic settings, labor unions, political action groups, health-care coalitions, and consumer advocacy groups. This book provides an evidence-based approach to attaining the necessary knowl- edge, skills, and attitudes for nursing practice in today’s dynamic health-care environment. The method used in conducting this research is the review of literature; data for the research was acquired from electronic databases such as CINAHL and PubMed. Moreover the research filters used consist of free link full text, publication year 2000-2016, English language and reference available. The data that emerged from the studies indicated that most of the nurses reported the feelings of apprehension, loneliness, and lacks of confidence during their cultural competence. Furthermore, the studies found that nurses need to recognize their own cultural values in seeking cultural competence; the nurses perceived the fear of mistakes and crossing boundaries related to the cultural and religious practices of minority patients as particularly stressful. The purpose of this project reviews benefits of improving breastfeeding, and breast milk production, among lactating women and their infants by increasing knowledge, skills and positive breastfeeding attitudes among Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses. The project health care facility has approximately 30% of its neonatal infants who receive breast milk within four weeks of life (Project Facility, 2017) compared to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation of 75% for early breastfeeding initiation (CDC, 2017). The project‟s quality improvement program provided a descriptive quantitative design in which questionnaires were distributed among neonatal nurses and breastfeeding mothers to query access and implement the CDC guidelines, Baby Friendly benchmarks, and Healthy People 2020 goals. The Breastfeeding Support Program was implemented as a 3 day breastfeeding support class, implementation of hands-on policy, and a quality improvement tool. The key findings of this project study demonstrated evidence that neonatal nurses were not given consistent interactive breastfeeding in-service. As such, neonatal nurses should be given a „hands on‟ breastfeeding support class and policy review annually per CDC recommendations.

SHIPPEE-RICE, PHD, RN, ║ AND DOT RADIUS KASIK, PHD¶ Understanding the experience of students learning the clinical nurse leader (CNL) role can be useful for faculty, preceptors, staff nurses, and interdisciplinary team members who guide them. This article analyzes the experience of four direct-entry master's students in the first cohort to complete the CNL curriculum and to sit for the pilot CNL certification examination. Using action research methodology, the students worked with the clinical immersion practicum faculty and a writing consultant to develop the study purpose, collect and analyze data, and prepare a manuscript. The main theme that emerged was, answering the question, “what is a CNL?” Subthemes supporting the main theme involved coming to the edge, trusting the process, rounding the corner, and valuing becoming. The analysis confirmed the value the CNL offers as a new vision to nursing education and practice. The students offered suggestions for the CNL curriculum and practicum.
