Bande Dessinée From Autoroute to AutoBioBD: The Minority Voice in Bande Dessinée by David Cooper A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Master of Philosophy College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham July 2010 v7 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract The world of the graphic novel has become a popular topic for academic discussion in recent decades and this wide range of work is discussed and built upon here in order to explore the theme of minority voice in the Francophone arena of bande dessinée. This exploration is centred on discovering how and why artists and groups have used the medium to bring their voice to an ever- increasing BD readership. A range of approaches is taken to achieve this, from examining the formal structures of the medium to considering the historical and political influences on contemporary albums. This thesis begins by defining the term minority in the context of the graphic novel and explaining the role which autobiographical bande dessinée, or the neogenre of AutoBioBD, will play in its discussion. It then considers a range of albums in which the minority identity and voice of the artist focus on nationality, theme and race. Finally the thesis examines the work of two artists produced in the 1990s, Baru and Fabrice Neaud. Baru’s road movie inspired Autoroute du Soleil and Neaud’s autobiographical Journal project form two of the major case studies in the final chapters, and lend the thesis part of its title. • Tintin and the Adventure of Transformative and Critical Fandom
. Volume 17, Issue 2 November 2020 Tintin and the adventure of transformative and critical fandom Tem Frank Andersen & Thessa Jensen, Aalborg University, Denmark Abstract: Using Roland Barthes’ and John Fiske’s notion of the readerly, writerly, and producerly text, this article provides an analysis and a tentative categorization of chosen transformative, fanmade texts for the comic book series The Adventures of Tintin. The focus is on the critical transformation of, and engagement with, the original text by academics, professional fans, and fans of popular culture. The analysis identifies different ways of transformational engagement with the original text: ranging from the academic writerly approach of researchers, over professional fans rewriting and critically engaging with the original text, to fanfiction fans reproducing heteroromantic tropes in homoerotic stories, fans of popular culture using Tintin figurines to document their own travels, and finally, fans who use Tintin covers as a way to express critical political sentiments. With Barthes and Fiske these groups are defined by their way of approaching the original text, thus working either in a readerly producerly or writerly producerly way, depending on how critical and political the producerly attitude is in regard to the original text. Keywords: The Adventures of Tintin, fan albums, fanfiction, fan communities; readerly, writerly, producerly reception Introduction In recent years, it has been quiet around the forever young reporter Tintin and his faithful friends Snowy and Captain Haddock. A motion capture movie about three of Tintin’s adventures failed to garner a larger following, despite having Steven Spielberg as the director (The Adventures of Tintin, Columbia Pictures, 2011).

  • Korean Webtoonist Yoon Tae Ho: History, Webtoon Industry, and Transmedia Storytelling
International Journal of Communication 13(2019), Feature 2216–2230 1932–8036/2019FEA0002 Korean Webtoonist Yoon Tae Ho: History, Webtoon Industry, and Transmedia Storytelling DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada At the Asian Transmedia Storytelling in the Age of Digital Media Conference held in Vancouver, Canada, June 8–9, 2018, webtoonist Yoon Tae Ho as a keynote speaker shared several interesting and important inside stories people would not otherwise hear easily. He also provided his experience with, ideas about, and vision for transmedia storytelling during in-depth interviews with me, the organizer of the conference. I divide this article into two major sections—Yoon’s keynote speech in the first part and the interview in the second part—to give readers engaging and interesting perspectives on webtoons and transmedia storytelling. I organized his talk into several major subcategories based on key dimensions. I expect that this kind of unusual documentation of this famous webtoonist will shed light on our discussions about Korean webtoons and their transmedia storytelling prospects. Keywords: webtoon, manhwa, Yoon Tae Ho, transmedia, history Introduction Korean webtoons have come to make up one of the most significant youth cultures as well as snack cultures: Audiences consume popular culture like webtoons and Web dramas within 10 minutes on their notebook computers or smartphones (Jin, 2019; Miller, 2007). The Korean webtoon industry has grown rapidly, and many talented webtoonists, including Ju Ho-min, Kang Full, and Yoon Tae Ho, are now among the most famous and successful webtoonists since the mid-2000s. Their webtoons—in particular, Yoon Tae Ho’s, including Moss (Ikki, 2008–2009), Misaeng (2012–2013), and Inside Men (2010–in progress)—have gained huge popularity, and all were successfully transformed into films, television dramas, and digital games.
