THE PASSAGE OF THE COMIC BOOK TO THE ANIMATED FILM: THE CASE OF THE SMURFS Frances Novier Baldwin, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2011 APPROVED: Marie-Christine Koop, Major Professor and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Christophe Chaguinian, Committee Member Lawrence Williams, Committee Member James D. Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Baldwin, Frances Novier. The Passage of the Comic Book to the Animated Film: The Case of the Smurfs. Master of Arts (French), August 2011, 56 pp., bibliography, 31 titles. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of history and culture on the passage of the comic book to the animated film. Although the comic book has both historical and cultural components, the latter often undergoes a cultural shift in the animation process. Using the Smurfs as a case study, this investigation first reviews existing literature pertaining to the comic book as an art form, the influence of history and culture on Smurf story plots, and the translation of the comic book into a moving picture. This study then utilizes authentic documents and interviews to analyze the perceptions of success and failure in the transformation of the Smurf comic book into animation: concluding that original meaning is often altered in the translation to meet the criteria of cultural relevance for the new audiences. Copyright 2011 By Frances Novier Baldwin ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am particularly grateful to Dr. Marie-Christine Koop for suggesting the topic for my thesis. • Peyo Communiqué EN
Fondation Folon From 25th of March till 27th of August 2017 WORLD PREMIERE “The panels in a comic strip are like a little theatre where I have the chance to animate my characters” (Peyo) Quiz question: which are the most famous of all Franco-Belgian comic strip characters throughout the world? Tintin? Asterix? No, the Smurfs! Originally known as the Schtroumpfs and called the Puffi in Italy, the Kumafu in Japan and other names in different places, the Smurfs are internationally renowned thanks to the animated television series from the Hanna-Barbera studios in the eighties, and, more recently, with the feature films produced by Sony. Inevitably, this fame has rather overshadowed the Smurfs’ creator, Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo. Born in Brussels in 1928, in the fifties this son of a British exchange broker became a mainstay of the Journal de SPIROU and created his unforgettable medieval series “Johan and Peewit” in which the Smurfs were born in 1958. The success of the little blue sprites was immediate and the Smurfs soon eclipsed Johan and Peyo’s other creations, “Benny Breakiron”, the little boy with Herculean strength, and « Pussycat". Fondation Folon Overwhelmed with work, Peyo took on assistants and established a studio which continues to perpetuate his work today, almost 25 years after his death in 1992. Yvan Delporte, chief editor from the golden age of SPIROU, said of Peyo: “Of all the comic strip authors I’ve met, Peyo was without question the best storyteller”. Pierre Culliford had two models: Hergé and Walt Disney. From the former he learned the purity of design and narrative effectiveness.

Abstract The world of the graphic novel has become a popular topic for academic discussion in recent decades and this wide range of work is discussed and built upon here in order to explore the theme of minority voice in the Francophone arena of bande dessinée. This exploration is centred on discovering how and why artists and groups have used the medium to bring their voice to an ever- increasing BD readership. A range of approaches is taken to achieve this, from examining the formal structures of the medium to considering the historical and political influences on contemporary albums. This thesis begins by defining the term minority in the context of the graphic novel and explaining the role which autobiographical bande dessinée, or the neogenre of AutoBioBD, will play in its discussion.

A year later however, the school was forced to close down because of the war and Franquin was then hired by Compagnie Belge d'Animation|CBA, a short-lived animation studio in Brussels. It is there he met some of his future colleagues: Maurice de Bevere (Morris, creator of Lucky Luke), Pierre Culliford (Peyo, creator of the Smurfs), and Eddy Paape. Three of them (minus Peyo) were hired by Dupuis in 1945, following CBA's demise. Peyo, still too young, would only follow them seven years later. Franquin started drawing covers and cartoons for Le Moustique, a weekly magazine about radio and culture.[1] He also worked for Plein Jeu, a monthly scouting magazine.

  • Racism for Beginners: Constructions of Chinese in Twentieth-Century Belgian Comics
CHAPTER NINE RACISM FOR BEGINNERS: CONSTRUCTIONS OF CHINESE IN Twentieth-CENTURY BELGIAN COMICS Idesbald Goddeeris Comics are amidst Belgium’s major export products. Some of them are world-famous and have been translated into dozens of languages: Hergé’s Tintin, Morris’ Lucky Luke, and Peyo’s Smurfs. Willy Vandersteen’s Suske and Wiske is known as Bob and Bobette in France, as Willy and Wanda in the U.S., as Spike and Suzy in the U.K., and as Ulla and Peter in Germany. Other comic characters have gained an equal popularity with generations of Belgian readers, albeit without having conquered an international read- ership: Jef Nys’ Jommeke, Marc Sleen’s Nero, and Merho’s Kiekeboe. News- papers published comics series every day for decades, using them as a competitive strategy for gaining more readers.1 On top of that, there were weekly magazines devoted to comics: Le Journal de Spirou published by the Dupuis company and Tintin published by the Studios Hergé. The stories only appeared in book form after they were serialized in newspapers. This peculiarly Belgian comic culture has admittedly declined in recent decades. Initially, one tried to stop the development by adapting televi- sion and movie characters into comic form (e.g. Willy Linthout’s and Urbanus’ Urbanus and Hec Leemans’ De kampioenen), but the internet seems to have dealt comics a serious blow. This loss of popularity has also been fueled by increasing ethnic diversity (immigrant children read far fewer post-war comics than native Belgian children) and the decreasing division of society and the media along Socialist, Catholic and other lines.
