Summary - Reasons for Selection/Interest of Site: Very extensive mosaic of ‘ffridd’ habitats and former mine spoil supporting complex of semi- upland and lowland habitats, partly contained within conifer plantation. Main components are ancient semi-natural woodland fragments, other semi-natural woodlands (mainly upland oak, Quercus sp) together with wet woodlands of alder (Alnus glutinosa), wet heathland, dry heathland, marshy grassland and semi-improved neutral grasslands. Also there are some bracken slopes, scrub, small ponds, streams and sections of dismantled railway. There are areas of semi- improved acid grasslands to the south especially. The habitats intergrade to form a complex mosaic, and may therefore also include some small areas of improved or low diversity semi- improved grassland, but any such areas are a very minor component. Great crested newt occurs in small pools within the SINC, and noctule and pipistrelle bats have both been recorded. Water vole may occur and a small badger sett is present. -

(= Alt- vatergebirge; Czech Republic) are presented. Immature stages of E. sudetica are described here for the first time. Both species have been reared to maturity from eggs laid by females caught in the wild. Out of accord with hitherto attainments, both species preferred Festuca supina as the main host plant (in choice experiments, E. epiphron preferred Avenella flexuosa). In rearing experiments, the species overwintered only once and finished their development within a one-year period. Highest mortality of individuals appeared during overwintering of L2- [E. sudetica) and L3-larvae (E epiphron). Introduction Five species of the species-rich holarctic genus Erebia Dalman, 1816, which is renown for high diversity in alpine and arctic habitats, frequent endemism and subspecific differentiation (Warren, 1936), occur in the HrubyJesenik Mts. -

Reticulate Evolutionary History of a Complex Group of Grasses: Phylogeny of Elymus StStHH Allotetraploids Based on Three Nuclear Genes Roberta J. Mason-Gamer*, Melissa M. Burns¤a, Marianna Naum¤b Department of Biological Sciences, The University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, United States of America Abstract Background: Elymus (Poaceae) is a large genus of polyploid species in the wheat tribe Triticeae. It is polyphyletic, exhibiting many distinct allopolyploid genome combinations, and its history might be further complicated by introgression and lineage sorting. We focus on a subset of Elymus species with a tetraploid genome complement derived from Pseudoroegneria (genome St) and Hordeum (H). We confirm the species’ allopolyploidy, identify possible genome donors, and pinpoint instances of apparent introgression or incomplete lineage sorting. Methodology/Principal Findings: We sequenced portions of three unlinked nuclear genes—phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, b-amylase, and granule-bound starch synthase I—from 27 individuals, representing 14 Eurasian and North American StStHH Elymus species. Elymus sequences were combined with existing data from monogenomic representatives of the tribe, and gene trees were estimated separately for each data set using maximum likelihood. Trees were examined for evidence of allopolyploidy and additional reticulate patterns. All trees confirm the StStHH genome configuration of the Elymus species. They suggest that the StStHH group originated in North America, and do not support separate North American and European origins. Our results point to North American Pseudoroegneria and Hordeum species as potential genome donors to Elymus. Diploid P. spicata is a prospective St-genome donor, though conflict among trees involving P. spicata and the Eurasian P. -

When historical vegetation patterns are unknown and local environments are highly degraded, the relationship between plant species distributions and environmental properties may provide a means to determine which species are suitable for individual restoration sites. We investigated the role of edaphic variation in explaining the distributions of three native bunchgrass species (Bromus carinatus, Elymus glaucus and Nassella pulchra) among central California mainland and island grasslands. The relative contribution of soil properties and spatial variation to native grass species abundance was estimated using canonical redundancy analysis, with subsequent testing of individual variables identified in ordination. Soil variables predicted a significant proportion (22–27%) of the variation in species distributions. Abiotic soil properties that drive species distributions included serpentine substrates and soil texture. Biotic properties that correlated with species distributions were ammonium and nitrogen mineralization rates. Spatial autocorrelation also contributed to species presence or absence at each site, and the significant negative autocorrelation suggested that species interactions and niche differentiation may play a role in species distributions in central California mainland and island grasslands. We explored the application of plant-environment relationships to ecological restoration for species selection at locations where degradation levels are high and historical communities are unclear. -

Background Aith Meadows and Burn of Aith SSSI is situated in Cunningsburgh, Shetland. It contains extensive wet meadows, traditionally managed for hay. The notified biological features are lowland neutral grassland and fen meadow. These are classified as in ‘favourable’ but ‘declining’ condition. The declining condition of the meadows is largely attributed to a decrease in active management. -

Butterfly Conservation South-Central England Regional Action Plan This action plan was produced in response to the Action for Butterflies project funded by WWF, EN, SNH and CCW by Dr Andy Barker, Mike Fuller & Bill Shreeves August 2000 Registered Office of Butterfly Conservation: Manor Yard, East Lulworth, Wareham, Dorset, BH20 5QP. Executive Summary This document sets out the 'Action Plan' for butterflies, moths and their habitats in South- Central England (Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight & Wiltshire), for the period 2000- 2010. It has been produced by the three Branches of Butterfly Conservation within the region, in consultation with various other governmental and non-governmental organisations. Some of the aims and objectives will undoubtedly be achieved during this period, but some of the more fundamental challenges may well take much longer, and will probably continue for several decades. The main conservation priorities identified for the region are as follows: a) Species Protection ! To arrest the decline of all butterfly and moth species in South-Central region, with special emphasis on the 15 high priority and 6 medium priority butterfly species and the 37 high priority and 96 medium priority macro-moths. ! To seek opportunities to extend breeding areas, and connectivity of breeding areas, of high and medium priority butterflies and moths. b) Surveys, Monitoring & Research ! To undertake ecological research on those species for which existing knowledge is inadequate. Aim to publish findings of research. ! To continue the high level of butterfly transect monitoring, and to develop a programme of survey work and monitoring for the high and medium priority moths. -
The Habitats and Vegetation (NVC) of Ardersier Port Proposed for Development
The Habitats and Vegetation (NVC) of Ardersier Port proposed for Development [Redacted] , Sept 2018 1 Introduction A National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey was undertaken of Ardersier covering about 200 ha. The site is situated close to the village of Ardersier in Moray. In parallel to the NVC survey a Phase 1 Habitat survey was undertaken. The purpose of these surveys was to determine the conservation value of the site and to assess the ecological value of the wetland habitat of the site in terms of the Ground Water Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystems (GWDTE) that it contains. Detailed descriptions of each of the habitats and NVC communities is presented below. The NVC classification is based on Rodwell (1991a, 1991b, 1992, 1995 and 2000) and the Phase 1 Habitats on the JNCC (2010). It should be noted that the descriptions in the report are based mainly on the information contained in the Appendices of this report and of the digital map supplied. All the maps in this report have been produced using ArcMap 10.6 and the shape file is available. In view of the proposed development of the area, following the habitat and NVC descriptions, an ecological assessment of the site is presented. The field survey was undertaken over three full days by the author from 6th August to 8th 2018. 1.1 The Appendices This contains much of the compiled data from which the habitat and plant community descriptions have been derived. In Appendix A and in Table 1 a list of all the NVC codes that have been mapped along with the main Phase 1 Habitats associated with this site are presented. -

Common names are Bahia grass and bahiagrass. The scientific and common names are correct and current. Varieties are Paspalum notatum var. notatum and Paspalum notatum var. saurae. The Paspalum genus is found in the Poaceae family. Parent Product 594 - Pollens - Grasses, Bahia Grass Paspalum notatum Published Data Panel I report (pg. 3124) lists, within the tribe Paniceae, the genus Paspalum, with a common name of Dallis. On page 3149, one controlled study (reference 42: Thommen, A.A., "Asthma and Hayfever in theory and Practice, Part 3, Hayfever" Edited by Coca, A.F., M. Walzer and A.A. Thommen, Charles C. Thomas, Springfield IL, 1931) supported the effectiveness of Paspalum for diagnosis. Papers supporting that Bahia grass contains unique antigens that are allergenic (skin test positive) are PMIDs. -
