Fort Selden was established in 1865 in what is now Radium Springs, New Mexico. The first troops to occupy it were members of the 125th US Colored Infantry Regiment, black soldiers from Kentucky who had joined the US Army at the close of the Civil War. At the time of this plan, the post commander was Capt. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., father of Douglas MacArthur, who later wrote that it was at Fort Selden that he and his brother learned to ride and shoot.
