For example, they were forbidden to own lands in white areas. However, they were allowed to vote after the end of apartheid. Activity 2 Listening Script : Mandela was born in a small village in South Africa on July 18 th 1918. His clan name was Madiba. He began his British education at the age of 7. His teacher gave him the name “Nelson”. After his father’s death, he was sent to the finest schools. In 1939, he ran away to Johannesburg because he wanted to avoid a pre-arranged marriage. In 1941 Nelson Mandela first came face to face with a racially divided South Africa. He witnessed the brutal reality of apartheid. That is to say a state of “separateness” between the White and nonwhite people of South Africa. This meant nationwide segregation and discrimination. Madiba and other young people gathered in meetings of the African Nation Congress, the ANC. Their goal was to fight apartheid and establish a democratic government. Nelson Mandela became such a radical militant that the South African government decided to silence him by imposing a ban. His freedom of speech and movement was severely restricted. He had to hide and soon became an “underground” hero to the young Black South Africans. In 1962, he was arrested by the police. Aged 45, Nelson Mandela and other activits were convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government at the South African Supreme Court of Pretoria. All of them were sentenced to life imprisonment at Robben Island, a prison which is situated 7 miles off the coast of Cape Town. 1976 appeared as a stepping stone in the history of South Africa. Indeed, in a black township of Soweto, security forces shot and killed Black students protesters. This event made the world aware of what was going on in South Africa. The South African government came under pressure from inside the country and worldwide. During the 1980’s important changes took place in South Africa and Nelson Mandela became the symbol of that change.
