The Library of America Interviews Lloyd Schwartz about Elizabeth Bishop In connection with the publication in October 2007 of Elizabeth Bishop: Poems, Prose, and Letters , edited by Robert Giroux and Lloyd Schwartz, Rich Kelley conducted this exclusive interview for The Library of America e-Newsletter. Sign up for the free monthly e-Newsletter at www.loa.org . Critics now consider Elizabeth Bishop one of the great poets of the 20th century, but they have a bit of problem placing her. Marianne Moore was an early mentor and Robert Lowell raved about her first book of poems and became a close friend, yet her poems are not confessional. Some people say she reminds them of Wallace Stevens, others of Robert Frost. How would you characterize Elizabeth Bishop’s achievement and why is she so difficult to place? Maybe what makes her hard to place is exactly what makes her different from anyone else. The more we learn about her the more we realize that her biography has a lot more to do with both the kind of poet she was and with the subject of her poems than first meets the eye. Here was someone who grew up essentially an orphan. Her father died when she was only a few months old. Her mother had a series of nervous breakdowns , was not able to take care of her , and was institutionalized when Bishop was four. Elizabeth never saw her again even though her mother lived for 18 more years. She was brought up by her grandparents and her aunts and farmed out to private schools. -

Initially celebrated for the minute detail of her descriptions, what John Ashbery memorably called her “thinginess,” Bishop’s reputation has risen dramatically since her death, in part owing to the publication of new work, including letters, stories, and visual art, as well as a controversial volume of uncollected poems, drafts, and fragments. This Companion to Elizabeth Bishop engages with key debates surrounding the interpretation and reception of Bishop’s published and unpublished writing in relation to questions of biography, the natural world, and politics. Individual chapters focus on well-known texts such as North & South, Questions of Travel , and Geography III , while offering fresh readings of the signifi cance of Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, and Brazil to Bishop’s life and work. With a chronology and guide to further reading, this volume explores the full range of Bishop’s artistic achievements and the extent to which the posthumous publications have contributed to her enduring popularity. Angus Cleghorn is professor of English and Liberal Studies at Seneca College, Toronto. Since 2004, he has served as the editor of the Elizabeth Bishop Bulletin for the Elizabeth Bishop Society. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract of Thesis Between Concealment and Revelation - Mystical Motifs in Selected Yiddish Works of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Their Sources in Kabbalistic Literature The subject of this study is an exploration of Jewish mystical motifs in the works of Yitskhok Bashevis Zinger (Isaac Bashevis Singer). The study is based on a close reading of the Yiddish original of all of Bashevis’s works investigated here. Changes or omissions in the English translations are mentioned and commented upon, wherever it is appropriate. This study consists of three major parts, apart from an introduction (Chapter 1) and a conclusion (Chapter 9). The first major part (Chapter 2) investigates the kabbalistic and hasidic influences on Bashevis’s life and the sources which inform the mystical aspects of his works. -

We understand what the agreements are and what disagreements still remain. Introduction When twenty-year-old Thomas Merton entered Columbia College on New York’s Morningside Heights in January 1935, he brought with him a re- markable background few of his American fellow students—certainly not Robert Giroux—could easily have fathomed. Born on January 31, 1915, in Prades, France, Tom, as his mother preferred to call him, did not spend his childhood enjoying life in the picturesque foothills of the Pyrenees. Rather, his seemingly mismatched parents—his father Owen, an artist, native New Zealander, and member of the Church of England, and his mother Ruth, likewise an artist, native Ohioan, and confirmed pacificist in the Quaker tradition—attempted to eke out an existence in a country they little knew. Though the French Catalans of this region tended to iden- tify themselves with their non-Francophone neighbors, they nevertheless felt at this time the impact of the German invasion on their native French soil in the Northeast. The advance of war impelled the Mertons to move on July 16, 1916, to Flushing, New York, not far from Douglaston, where infant Tom’s maternal grandparents lived. The Mertons followed the war news on the radio intensely as the German military commanders vowed to “bleed France white” at Verdun, an apparently vulnerable target north- west of Strasbourg on the way to Paris. Though able to halt the German advances here during the heavy snows of February 1916, French and Brit - ish troops nevertheless suffered over five hundred thousand casualities at the Battle of the Somme. From Flushing, the Mertons could only have felt relieved by President Woodrow Wilson’s declaration of war on Germany on April 6, 1917, followed by the arrival of General John J.
