FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 16, 2014 7:00 PM PT The Television Academy tonight (Saturday, August 16, 2014) presented the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy® Awards for programs and individual achievements at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. This first ceremony of the 66th Emmy Awards honored guest performers on television dramas and comedy series, as well as the many talented artists and craftspeople behind the scenes to create television excellence. Produced for the 20th year by Spike Jones, Jr., this year’s Creative Arts Awards featured an array of notable presenters, among them Jane Lynch, Tony Hale, Amy Schumer, Allison Janney, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Morgan Freeman, Tony Goldwyn, Aisha Tyler, Joe Manganiello and Carrie Preston. Highlights included Jon Voight’s moving posthumous presentation of the Academy’s prestigious Governors Award to casting icon, Marion Dougherty. Voight was one of Dougherty’s discoveries. Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -

"WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC: POLKAS, PARODIES AND THE POWER OF SATIRE By Chuck Miller Originally published in Goldmine #514 Al Yankovic strapped on his accordion, ready to perform. All he had to do was impress some talent directors, and he would be on The Gong Show, on stage with Chuck Barris and the Unknown Comic and Jaye P. Morgan and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine. "I was in college," said Yankovic, "and a friend and I drove down to LA for the day, and auditioned for The Gong Show. And we did a song called 'Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung.' And the audience seemed to enjoy it, but we never got called back. So we didn't make the cut for The Gong Show." But while the Unknown Co mic and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine are currently brain stumpers in 1970's trivia contests, the accordionist who failed the Gong Show taping became the biggest selling parodist and comedic recording artist of the past 30 years. His earliest parodies were recorded with an accordion in a men's room, but today, he and his band have replicated tracks so well one would think they borrowed the original master tape, wiped off the original vocalist, and superimposed Yankovic into the mix. And with MTV, MuchMusic, Dr. Demento and Radio Disney playing his songs right out of the box, Yankovic has reached a pinnacle of success and longevity most artists can only imagine. Alfred Yankovic was born in Lynwood, California on October 23, 1959. Seven years later, his parents bought him an accordion for his birthday. -

Art/Production Design Department Thank you for your interest in the Art Department of I.A.T.S.E. Local 212. Please take a few moments to read the following information, which outlines department specific requirements necessary when applying to the Art Department. The different positions within the Art/Production Department include: o Production Designer o Art Director (Head of Department) o Assistant Art Director o Draftsperson/Set Designer o Graphic Artist/Illustrator o Art Department Coordinator and o Trainee Application Requirements For Permittee Status In addition to completing the “Permit Information Package” you must meet the following requirement(s): o A valid Alberta driver’s license, o Have a strong working knowledge of drafting & ability to read drawings, o Have three years professional Design training or work experience, o Strong research abilities, o Freehand drawing ability and o Computer skills in Accounting and/or CADD and or Graphic Computer programs. “Command Performance” (Episode No. 21)—Bob Hope, Master of Ceremonies (July 7, 1942) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell Bob Hope Soldiers line up for a “Command Performance” performance Radio’s unique “Command Performance” series was the brainchild of producer Louis G. Cowan. Cowan had joined the radio division of the US War Department just prior to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. With the commencement of the war though, Cowan found his job suddenly changed: rather than producing shows for civilians, he now found himself charged with creating programs for thousands of new servicemen stationed all around the globe. So he happened upon an idea. Many new members of the armed forces were no doubt having to quickly and awkwardly adjust to their new regimented military existence, to the myriad of commands and orders they now had to obey. What would happen if, instead of taking commands, they were allowed to give them, at least in terms of entertainment? Similar in nature to TV’s later “You Asked For It!,” Cowan’s “Command Performance” would solicit requests from servicemen the world over and ask them what they wanted to hear over the air. Cowan and his radio staff would then do their best to make it happen for them. From the beginning, to show their support for the troops, performers of all types (recruited via letters and ads in “Variety”) were generous with their time and talents. And both CBS and NBC donated their studios and recording facilities to the production. Even the major unions and show business guilds relaxed their rules in order to do these shows for the war effort (with the caveat that the shows be heard only by military personnel). -
