IH RC Ethnic Collections Series, No.9 THE UKRAINIAN AMERICAN COLLECTION IMMIGRATION HISTORY RESEARCH CENTER ,i UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA i 1976 IMMIGRATION HISTORY RESEARCH CENTER TIlE UKRAINIAN AMERICAN COLLECTION Since 1964 the IHRC has b~en building a collection of source materials for the study of immigrant ethRic groups which came to the United States and Canada from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, as well as the Middle East. The scope of the material covers both the immigration and the subsequent history of the ethnic groups in North America. At present the IHRC archival collections consist of over 25,000 volumes of published material (20,000 monographs, 1,700 periodical titles), the files of more than '400 ethnic newspapers (of which 135 titles are currently received regularly), 2.500 reels of microfilm, and approximately 2,000 linear feet (two million items) of manuscripts. The manuscript holdings include the records of typical ethnic institutions, such as fraternal societies. churches. relief organizations. and publishing companies. Other material derived from the ethnic groups themselves is also represented, including collections of personal papers from ethnic leaders. clergymen. journalists, labor leaders. writers, poets, and politicians. The growing mass of material related to the Ukrainian peoples in America forms an important and integral part of the IHRC archives. The following is a brief description of the contents of the Ukrainian American Collection : Serial Newspaper Manuscript Monographs Titles Current Total Titles Collections 5,000 500 11 90 32 (54 current) The Ukrainian American Collection has become the largest and richest collection of its kind in this country. CHAPTER 14 Where the Water Sheds: Disputed Deposits at the Ends of the Danube Tanya Richardson The toponym “New Land” often designates ancient land that Europeans “discovered” on other continents. But there is also New Land on the east- ern periphery of the European continent where the Danube River meets the Black Sea. There New Land is a shape-shifting spit at the Danube’s Kilia mouth, formed from the depositions of sand and silt where river and seawater intermingle. The spit—now three kilometers long—has existed as a single entity in name only since it began forming roughly twenty-five years ago. It resembles an archipelago of sediments whose form is rear- ranged each year by the force of winter storms.

8/30/12 Bessarabia Business Directory of 1924 This database contains records of grocers, teachers, local officials, stone carvers, butchers, bakers, innkeepers, lawyers, peddlers, rabbis, and many others who worked in the early 1920s in Romania's eastern counties, formerly in Bessarabia, and who apparently were Jewish. The information was published in the "Socec" Annuary of the Great-Roumania, dated 1924-1925, by the prominent Romanian publishing house Socec & Co. • Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Churches A
Atlas cover:Layout 1 4/19/11 11:08 PM Page 1 Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Churches Assembling a mass of recently generated data, the Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Churches provides an authoritative overview of a most important but often neglected segment of the American Christian community. Protestant and Catholic Christians especially will value editor Alexei Krindatchʼs survey of both Eastern Orthodoxy as a whole and its multiple denominational expressions. J. Gordon Melton Distinguished Professor of American Religious History Baylor University, Waco, Texas Why are pictures worth a thousand words? Because they engage multiple senses and ways of knowing that stretch and deepen our understanding. Good pictures also tell compelling stories. Good maps are good pictures, and this makes the Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Churches, with its alternation and synthesis of picture and story, a persuasive way of presenting a rich historical journey of Orthodox Christianity on American soil. The telling is persuasive for both scholars and adherents. It is also provocative and suggestive for the American public as we continue to struggle with two issues, in particular, that have been at the center of the Orthodox experience in the United States: how to create and maintain unity across vast terrains of cultural and ethnic difference; and how to negotiate American culture as a religious other without losing oneʼs soul. David Roozen, Director Hartford Institute for Religion Research Hartford Seminary Orthodox Christianity in America has been both visible and invisible for more than 200 years. Visible to its neighbors, but usually not well understood; invisible, especially among demographers, sociologists, and students of American religious life.
