Latta, Ph.D. Abstract The focus of this ethnographic study is to examine the industry-wide culture of the American ballet. Two additional research questions guided the investigation: what attributes, and their light and dark dimensions, are valued among individuals selected for leadership roles within the culture, and how does the ballet industry nurture these attributes? An understanding of the culture was garnered through observations and interviews conducted in three classically-based professional ballet companies in the United States: one located in the Rocky Mountain region, one in the Midwestern region, and one in the Pacific Northwest region. Data analysis brought forth cultural and leadership themes revealing an industry consumed by “the ideal” to the point that members are willing to make sacrifices, both at the individual and organizational levels, for the pursuit of beauty. The ballet culture was found to expect its leaders to manifest the light dimensions of attributes valued by the culture, because these individuals are elevated to the extent that they “become the culture,” but they also allow these individuals to simultaneously exemplify the dark dimensions of these attributes.

Household share for ad-supported cable was up more than 5 points from a year ago and more than 3x the combined 4 broadcast nets’ share, which was down 5 points from ’12, according to a Turner analysis of summer-to-date data from Nielsen. Turner projects cable’s share at 76%. Ad-supported cable’s share among 18-49s is projected to hit a record high of 78%, up 6 percentage points from a year ago. Online video doesn’t seem to be having much of an impact at this point, with viewing of ad-supported cable at an all-time high and average hours of viewing per person per week at 17.4, up from 17 last year, Turner said. The broadcast nets’ average viewing per person slipped to 6.2 hours from 6.8 last year. USA continues its reign, with the net easily expected to nab its 8th consecutive summer win among total viewers (2.91mln) 18-49s (1.07mln) and 25-54s (1.13mln) in prime. There’s a new champ in the 18-34 category, with Adult Swim celebrating its first #1 summer finish among the demo in prime. Compared to the same period last year, the net’s average primetime delivery for 18-34s swelled 19% to 555K.

Position Paper For "Teens, Tweens, and In-Betweens: The Legacy of the WB" by Eric Whedbee Glen Oak, Sunnydale, Capeside, and Stars Hollow are a selection of fictional towns from The WB’s most popular television shows. Programs such as 7th Heaven, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek and Gilmore Girls relied heavily on the construction of a well-defined community. These towns were similar in that they were typically represented as safe and friendly small towns. Presented as fictional towns, they borrow from the American imaginary and often recall an imagined former era of relative tranquility. They are towns that exist alongside real locations and implicitly provide an alternative. Their artificiality is essential for the type of community they construct--a simulacrum of small town America, even as this notion is at times undermined as it is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most notable in this cycle of the WB dramas that emphasized setting was Gilmore Girls. The town of Stars Hollow was filmed on the WB's back-lot and this location choice enabled it's hermetic world to develop fully. Not only does Gilmore Girls set its main characters against the backdrop of a very lively community, this community is made up of both secondary and tertiary characters. Stars Hollow itself is often a central concern for one of the program's subplots and this narrative is often driven by these peripheral characters. It is this feature, which Gilmore Girls finessed, that set the WB’s programming apart from other dramas during this time. With the end of the WB and its transformation into the CW, community-driven dramas became a rare occurrence.

The thesis interrogates the notion that taking part in ballet is a capitulation to the 'stereotypically feminine', by analysing the testimony of girls aged between 8 and II who attend local dancing schools. It presents their comparative assessment of the pedagogies in their primary schools and dancing classes. The thesis interrogates the stability of the idea of 'feminine' and its relationship with the political position of women, employing the theoretical, conceptual foundation for the obverse of a phallogocentric value system developed by psychiatrist Ian D.Suttie (1935), and the possibilities of loosening binary oppositions offered by the semiotic (Greimas') square. The thesis also proposes that the 'symbolic spread' (Frye, 1976: 59) of ballet, and hostility to it, are cognate with the concerns, dynamics, and reception of literary romance, and that both are perceived by the 'guardians oftaste and learning' (Northrop Frye's phrase, 1976:23) in terms which demonstrate Suttie's 'taboo on tenderness'. The thesis brings into representation the history and relationship to the state of British dance culture's 'Private Sector', in dialectical relationship to the largely negative terms in which it is cast by the academic dance community and the maintained education sector.
