COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this body should pause to honor those exemplary citizens who contribute significantly to the reputation of Tennessee throughout the world as the center of the music industry universe and home of the most generous and compassionate citizenry by helping to reinforce the "Volunteer State" nickname; and WHEREAS, one such citizen is John Rich who has garnered high acclaim as a singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality over the course of his illustrious and storied career in the music and entertainment industry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rich, born on January 7, 1974, in Amarillo, Texas, moved to middle Tennessee in the early 1990s, where he attended and graduated from Dickson County Senior High School with the class of 1992, making lifelong friends and ties with the community; and WHEREAS, after high school, Mr. Rich chose to forego college to pursue his dream of becoming a country music recording artist. In the summer of 1992, he was chosen by executives at Opryland USA to be a performer in the Nashville-based theme park's daily variety show entitled "Country Music USA," wherein Mr. Rich performed songs by country music superstars such as George Jones, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Vince Gill; and WHEREAS, during his time at Opryland USA, Mr. Rich met fellow performer Dean Sams, who along with Mr. Rich and two other fellow Texans formed a band named Texassee.

Right out of the gate, they seem to reach off stage and grab your attention with their amazing lead vocals, stunning vocal harmonies, and award winning musicianship. As you listen to the first few of your favorite country hits you start realize there is a wonderful variety of sounds coming off the stage from fiddle to keyboards to mandolin to electric guitar and it’s all masterfully held together by one of the tightest rhythm sections you’re likely to hear. This combination of talent took a long time coming. The group first surfaced back in 1993 when Preacher Man (lead/acoustic guitar, lead/backing vocals) enlisted the help of some fellow musicians for the “Wild Heart” project. Since then they’ve logged a lot of miles playing everything from the Dane County Fair to the Hodag to the Taste of Madison and the State Cow Chip Throw and along the way picked up some of the best talent the state has to offer. Mark Sigwald “Siggy” took over on drums in 1996 and it wasn’t long before he found himself playing at the Star Spangled Celebration. Jeff Root, AKA "Jefferson," (bass, backing vocals) aced the audition and was hired on the spot in 2002 with 3 weeks to learn 50 songs…Wild Heart calls that “trial by fire." The amazing TC (Theresa Peart) started in 2009 on lead/backing vocals, mandolin and keyboards.
