    COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this body should pause to honor those exemplary citizens who contribute significantly to the reputation of Tennessee throughout the world as the center of the music industry universe and home of the most generous and compassionate citizenry by helping to reinforce the "Volunteer State" nickname; and WHEREAS, one such citizen is John Rich who has garnered high acclaim as a singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality over the course of his illustrious and storied career in the music and entertainment industry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rich, born on January 7, 1974, in Amarillo, Texas, moved to middle Tennessee in the early 1990s, where he attended and graduated from Dickson County Senior High School with the class of 1992, making lifelong friends and ties with the community; and WHEREAS, after high school, Mr. Rich chose to forego college to pursue his dream of becoming a country music recording artist. In the summer of 1992, he was chosen by executives at Opryland USA to be a performer in the Nashville-based theme park's daily variety show entitled "Country Music USA," wherein Mr. Rich performed songs by country music superstars such as George Jones, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Vince Gill; and WHEREAS, during his time at Opryland USA, Mr. Rich met fellow performer Dean Sams, who along with Mr. Rich and two other fellow Texans formed a band named Texassee.

WALL COUNCIL MEMBERS: RYAN FARNWORTH SCOTT HANSEN JIM LUNDBERG MICHAEL NELSON JONATHAN REID Mayor’s Message July 24th Pioneer Day Celebration JJuullyy 22001122 NNeewwsslleetttteerr This year we are putting on the largest 24th of July Celebration to Grand Marshall date. Our evening activities will begin at 7pm at the Ira Allan Sports Henry Bradford Park. Henry Wells Bradford has been named Grand Marshall of the Helicopter Ping Pong Drop 2012 Mapleton Pioneer Day Celebration festivities and parade. This will be our third annual bike giveaway. Adults must be present Bradford’s heritage and years of service to his country, to register your child prior to the event and receive a wristband. There community and church make him a great representative of will be a registration booth at the downtown City Park from 10am-2pm, Mapleton. during the morning celebration, and registration booths at Ira Allan Park Today Henry’s numerous posterity is his pride and joy. He from 5pm-6:30pm. Your child will not be allowed to participate unless has 38 grandchildren, 104 great-grandchildren (as of this writing) they have a wristband. and his first great-great-grandchild is due in October 2012! Concert Entertainment this year will be provided by the JD Shepherd Band and main act, Trent Willmon. Fireworks The activities will conclude at dusk as in previous years with a fantastic fireworks display. This will be our biggest show ever and will rival the Stadium of Fire’s 4th of July show. You don’t want to miss it. This year’s morning events in the City Park, and the parade, will be organized by volunteers from the Mapleton Utah LDS Stake.
