Atmospheric scientists at Rothera and Halley Research Stations collect data about the atmosphere above Antarctica this is done by launching radiosonde meteorological balloons which have small sensors and a transmitter attached to them. The balloons are filled with helium and so rise high into the Antarctic atmosphere sampling the air and transmitting the data back to the station far below. A radiosonde meteorological balloon holds an impressive 2,000 litres of helium, giving it enough lift to climb for up to two hours. Helium is lighter than air and so causes the balloon to rise rapidly through the atmosphere, while the instruments beneath it sample all the required data and transmit the information back to the surface. - Permissions for information on radiosonde meteorological balloons kindly provided by British Antarctic Survey. Navigation on Shackleton's Voyage to Antarctica

The subsequent ordeal and efforts that lead to the successful rescue of all expedition members are the stuff of legend and have been extensively discussed elsewhere. Prior to that time, however, the voyage had proceeded relatively uneventfully and was dutifully recorded in Captain Frank Worsley’s log and work book. This provides a window into the navigational methods used in the day-to- day running of the ship by a master mariner under normal circumstances in the early twentieth century. The conclusions that can be gleaned from a careful inspection of the log book over this period are described here. Isotopic Oxygen-18 Results from Blue-Ice Areas
Isotopic oxygen-18 results Tongue blue-ice field ranges in 8180 from –40.7 to –58.8 parts per thousand. In a 200-meter transect with a sample every 10 from blue-ice areas meters, a 60-meter area of "yellow" or "dirty" ice has an av- erage 8180 value of –42.8 ± 1.4 parts per thousand, while the average for the blue-ice is –54.4 ± 0.3 parts per thousand. 'The Long Silence'
Just on a hundred years ago, on 31 March 1909, a small crowd of people gathered in the pre- dawn gloom of Darling Harbour, waiting for a steamer to arrive. Professor T.W.Edgeworth David was returning to Sydney after an absence of 15 months, during which time he had served as leader of the scientific team on Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition, undertaken a climb of the volcanic Mt Erebus and successfully completed a hazardous journey to the vicinity of the South Magnetic Pole. He was returning to Australia a popular hero. Many in the waiting crowd were students, young men and women from David’s geology department at the University of Sydney. It was a cold morning and people were muffled in scarves and overcoats. They stood around in subdued conversation or passed the time watching the loading of coal on the many ships berthed there under the glare of huge electric lights. At 5am the first rays of sun appeared and soon afterwards a vessel glided into view through the fog. The Sydney Mail described the arrival: ‘ A tall figure on the steamer’s deck was looking eagerly at the crowd on the wharf. There was no mistaking that old, familiar form.’ An undergraduate yelled, ‘“I see you’ve got your old brown hat on...” And, greeted with smiles and hand-wringing, Professor David was home from Antarctica.’ * * * * * * * In 1907 Edgeworth David had learnt that Ernest Shackleton, a veteran of Robert Scott’s polar expedition of 1901/2, was raising funds for a new expedition to the Antarctic.
