Asoka Bandarage There are increasing accounts of aggression against religious minorities in the countries of Asia with a Buddhist majority, such as, Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Simplistic depictions of majority aggression and minority victimization aggrevate polarization and conflict rather than peace and harmony. To find lasting solutions, these conflicts need to be viewed in a broader global and humanist perspective, rather than simply as isolated “Buddhist” violence or extremism. Asian Buddhist societies today feel threatened by a confluence of political, economic, and cultural forces beyond their control. Globalization and capitalistic consumer culture drive people away from the simple, ecological, and harmonious way of life associated with the Buddha’s teachings. The absence of international financial networks of aid and mutual support, such as those deployed by Christian evangelicals and Wahabi Muslims make many Buddhists feel relatively powerless against expanding external forces. While aggression or violence by members of any other community should never be condoned, the escalation of communal fears and conflicts needs to be understood in relation to changing local, regional, and global socio- economic realities. This workshop will engage participants in dialogue and discussion about the complexities of “religious” conflicts in Buddhist-majority countries in Asia. It will explore how the Buddha’s teachings on the Middle Path can be utilized to address “religious” extremism and the underlying human afflictions of greed, hatred, and selfishness. In so doing, the workshop will seek to contribute to a compassionate social justice framework helpful to Buddhist women for promoting harmonious co-existence among ethno-religious communities in Asia and elsewhere.

Humanistic Buddhists’ Voices Surrounding Abortion in Contemporary Taiwan Grace Cheng-Ying Lin1 Abstract This paper examines the voices surrounding abortion expressed by monasteries in Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan. As the fundamental principle of ethics, non-harming (ahimsā) prioritizes the value of life. Master Yin Shun and Master Sheng Yen claim that a fetus is a sentient being, and abortion is a sin. Master Chao Hwei further demands a strategy that truly protects the women and the fetus in the patriarchal context. On the other hand, Master Hsing Yun, employing utilitarianism, states that a woman possesses the best knowledge of the consequences of an abortion. Master Hai Tao promotes a newly popularized ritual to appease aborted fetuses, while some monasteries are critical of its possible exploitation of women and manipulation of scriptures. The wide spectrum of Buddhist narratives challenges the pro-life vs. pro-choice mode of debate. Furthermore, the diversity of the narratives shows how reproductive politics in Taiwan is embedded within the conflicts between modernity and tradition, as well as locality and globality. We therefore need a thorough knowledge of the pathways by which invasive species are introduced. Prayer animal release is the mainly Buddhist and Taoist tradition of releasing captive animals to gain merit. Although it is assumed to benefit the animals being released as well as the practitioners, prayer release as it is currently practiced has negative impacts that are at odds with the intended compassion. Major impacts are the introduction of invasive species and enhancement of spread and establishment. In this overview, I detail what is currently known about prayer release for aquatic invasions and provide consensus views of the best ways to address any potential impacts.

While aggression or violence by members of any other community should never be condoned, the escalation of communal fears and conflicts needs to be understood in relation to changing local, regional, and global socio- economic realities. This workshop will engage participants in dialogue and discussion about the complexities of “religious” conflicts in Buddhist-majority countries in Asia. It will explore how the Buddha’s teachings on the Middle Path can be utilized to address “religious” extremism and the underlying human afflictions of greed, hatred, and selfishness. In so doing, the workshop will seek to contribute to a compassionate social justice framework helpful to Buddhist women for promoting harmonious co-existence among ethno-religious communities in Asia and elsewhere.
