W. Brown & K. Nishida Abstract Acleris nishidai Brown, sp. n., is described and illustrated from the central cordillera of Costa Rica. The new species is assigned to Acleris Hübner, [1825] on the basis of the similarity of the male genitalia with other described species of the genus. The female genitalia are relatively modified and lack the pronounced lateral lobes of the sterigma characteristic of most Acleris. The new species has been reared from native and cultivated Rubus spp. (Rosaceae) at 3000 m elevation. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Tortricidae, Tortricini, Acleris, new species, Costa Rica. The discovery by Leraut (2003) of the existence of a species closely related to Acleris emargana (Fabricius, 1775) is confirmed. It is shown that this was already known to lepidopterists in the first half of the 19th century, but like many Acleris names later regarded as only a form, the name Acleris effractana (Hübner, 1799) is the oldest name for the species. A neotype for A. effractana is designated. A. effractana is shown to have a Holarctic distribution, with occurrence only in the northern part of Europe. -

A large number of tortricid species have been inadvertently introduced into North America from Eurasia, and many have the potential to inflict considerable negative economic and ecological impacts. Because native species behave differently than introduced species, it is critical to distinguish between the two. Unfortunately, this can be a difficult task. In the past, many tortricids discovered in North America were assumed to be the same as their Eurasian counterparts, i.e., Holarctic. Using DNA sequence data, morphological characters, food plants, and historical records, we analyzed the origin of 151 species of Tortricidae present in North America. The results indicate that the number of Holarctic species has been overestimated by at least 20%. We also determined that the number of introduced tortricids in North America is unexpectedly high compared other families, with tortricids accounting for approximately 23–30% of the total number of moth and butterfly species introduced to North America. -

This is a handsome paperback treating the tortricid fauna of Vietnam, and it represents the culmination of decades of work by V. I. Kuznetsov, J. Razowski, and now S. Nedoshivina. The book treats 363 species, each with its own species account and distribution map, the latter of which are neatly packed together near the end of the book. Nearly all species are illustrated in color, most for the first time. Black-and-white images of the male and female genitalia of select species also are provided. Early chapters provide a review of wing pattern nomenclature, morphological termin- ology of structures of the genitalia, and features of the larvae and pupae. Next, there is a checklist of the species recorded from Vietnam. Then, the bulk of the book is dedicated to the species accounts, which include comments on taxonomy, identi- fication, food plants, and geographic distrib- NEW BOOK ON ution, and occasionally with a list of specimens examined from Vietnam. Moths in Hamworthy 2019 & 2020
Moths of Poole Harbour is a project of Birds of Poole Harbour MOTHS IN HAMWORTHY 2019 & 2020 The ‘Moths of Poole Harbour’ (MoPH) project was set up in 2017 to gain knowledge of moth species occurring in Poole Harbour, Dorset, their distribution, abundance and to some extent, their habitat requirements. The study area shares the same boundaries as the Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) project. The trapping site in Hamworthy is a private house dating from the 1950’s with a large and well- established garden. The garden is strategically placed to attract species from a wider area and backs onto others including a small orchard. It is within 400 metres of both the harbour shoreline and Hamworthy Park. It is also situated around half a mile from the eastern edge of Ham Common. It is apparent that this strategic location makes it an ideal site for sampling the conurbation moth population. The site was visited for 6 nights of trapping from August to October 2019 and proved to host an exceptionally rich and varied moth fauna so it was decided to include the site again in 2020. To that end a further 40 nights trapping was undertaken from 31st May until 21st November. The site was considered suitable for the operation of 2 MV traps, given the size of the garden, and we are extremely grateful to the owner and others for their considerable help and support with logistics and setting up of kit. A total of 306 moth species have been recorded at Hamworthy, including a number of aggregate species and records from leaf-mines only. -
