    TRACES OF OLD LEGENDS IN A MODERN LOCAL TRADITION: PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS ON A GREEK INSULAR COMMUNITY Marilena Papachristophorou Abstract: A local legend recorded in several variants during a fieldwork re- search on a small East-Aegean island is the crux of the present paper. The legend discusses the habitation of the island by two brothers, Elias and Nicolas, about 200 years ago; the population of the island still includes their descend- ants. The recorded variants of this particular legend are usually considered more or less reliable historical sources; in this sense they touch upon oral his- tory and contribute to the construction of a consistent identity of the island’s inhabitants. A closer and more attentive approach to a group of legends connected to the abovementioned one reveals a second semantic level with obvious connotations: the cavern inhabited by the two brothers, the symbolic load of their first names, the fraternal conflict underlined by the opposition of land cultivation and ani- mal husbandry, accompanied by the division of the grounds, etc. The principle questions this paper attempts to answer are how the story corresponds to real events and facts and to which degree does it convey and mute pre-existing mythological elements, which are related either to the sur- rounding Modern Greek mythological tradition or the possible mythological rem- nants of a remote (local) past, the latter partially revealed in archaeological research. In this paper it is argued that the position of this legend draws heavily from the limited local cultural context. Although being an “independent” narrative describing precise historical facts and personae, it has nevertheless developed in consistent exchange with other narratives, beliefs and representations.

    INJECTING ACTUALITY IN TV FICTION ISSUE 6, December 2019 Injecting Actuality in TV Fiction: The Financial Crisis in Greek TV Comedy Series Ioanna Vovou Panteion University ABSTRACT This paper examines the use of actuality inside Greek TV series as a key element creating a common and familiar ground to be shared with the spectator. Focusing on Greek TV series, our analysis builds on the idea that media contents (and, thus, TV fiction) are not a simple mirror reflection of society but symbols and, more precisely, symptoms. Within such a context, the question that we propose to examine in this paper is the following: What is Greek TV series’ promise of actuality a symptom of, if not a simple analogical representation of the ‘real’, factual situation Greek society is experiencing? By applying a semiopragmatic analysis, this paper argues that the injection of actuality in TV series functions as a strong engagement strategy for the fictive narrative universe that is created inside the series. Our semiopragmatic analysis of the state of reality injected in several Greek TV series considers the latter as media objects and is built in contradiction to considerations of media productions as plain ‘reflections of society’.

Dawkins first came to Crete during the period of his Craven Scholarship, which was awarded to him by Emmanuel College, Cambridge as a reward for his Double First in the Classical Tripos. Under the terms of the scholarship, he spent the academic year 1902-3 attached to the British School at Athens. During this period, in early 1903, excited by Arthur Evans’ discoveries at Knossos, he sailed to Crete not only to familiarize himself with the recently discovered Minoan finds that were housed in the archaeological museum at Herakleion, but also to take part in one of the excavations. In a letter to Xan Fielding (19 January 1952) he writes that he landed at Suda Bay, from where he rode to Candia (the Venetian name for modern Herakleion)2 1 Photo from the Dawkins archive, University of Oxford.
