Greece in British Women's Literary Imagination, 1913–2013 19 Papargyriou, Assinder, Holton, Papargyriou, Assinder, Greece in British Women’s Literary Imagination, 1913–2013 offers a compre- hensive overview of British female writing on Greece in the twentieth century and beyond. Contributors cover a vast array of authors: Rose Macaulay, Jane El- len Harrison, Virginia Woolf, Ann Quin, Dorothy Una Ratcliffe, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Pym, Olivia Manning, Mary Stewart, Victoria Hislop, Loretta Proctor and Sofka Zinovieff formed special ties with Greece and made it the focus of their literary imagination. Moving from Bloomsbury to Mills & Boon, the book offers insight into the ways romantic literature has shaped readers’ perceptions about Greece. Why have female authors of such diverse backgrounds and lit- erary orientations been attracted by a country burdened by its past and trou- bled by its present? What aspects of the country do they choose to highlight? Are female perceptions of Greece different from male ones? The book exam- ines these and many more exciting questions. Literary Imagination, 1913–2013 Eleni Papargyriou teaches at the University of Vienna, having previously lectured at King’s College London (2009–13). She has held research and teaching positions at Ox- Greece in British Women’s ford, Princeton and the University of Ioannina, Greece. She has published the mono- graph Reading Games in the Greek Novel (2011) and co-edited Camera Graeca: Photographs, Narratives, Materialities (2015). She has published articles on inter- textuality and the novel, the cultural implications of (self)translation, visual moder- nity and the rapport between literary text and photographic image. She is on the editorial board for the Journal of Greek Media and Culture. Semele Assinder studied Classics at Oxford before going to Cambridge to work on her doctoral dissertation, Greece in British Women’s Writing, 1866–1915. During her PhD, she worked in Athens while holding an Onassis Foreigner’s Fellowship; upon completion she took up the British School at Athens’ Macmillan Rodewald Studentship. Greece in British David Holton is Emeritus Professor of Modern Greek at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Selwyn College. He is the author of many books and articles on Mod- ern Greek language and literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. With the exception of travel writing, which has long been associated with women writers (Kolocotroni and Mitsi 2008; Mahn 2012), the connection between British female authors of fiction and Greece has not yet been examined systematically (Bassnett 2002). Yet, the twentieth century alone produced an impressive number of British female authors who wrote about Greece. They range from highly esteemed representatives

    Love In Her Own Peculiar Way: Barbara Pym, Useless Longings, and Some Tame Gazelle Michelle Huneven Paper presented at the 18th North American Conference of the Barbara Pym Society Cambridge, Massachusetts, 12-13 March 2016 Like Henry James, Barbara Pym’s great subject is the impossibility of love. While James wrote of an inability to love, Pym wrote of love that is not returned. Unrequited love. Useless longings. Herself an ambivalent adept of one-sided passion—she did appreciate a good, gut-twisting love pang— Pym wrote of women who love married men (Some Tame Gazelle and Jane and Prudence ), women who form intense attachments to gay men (A Glass of Blessings, The Sweet Dove Died), and women who stalk their love objects (No Fond Return of Love). Pym was 22 when, to amuse her friends at Oxford—and also to get a handle on a distressing love affair— she wrote a short story about all of them called Some Tame Gazelle. Her friends were amused, and Pym determined to expand it into a novel. Not as easy as she’d thought! It would take her fifteen years to hammer that painful romantic episode into her pitch-perfect comic masterpiece. 1. Barbara Barbara Pym as a college student was tall, attractive, well-dressed, shy, funny as hell, and very smart. Men liked her, and she was keenly interested in return. Perhaps a little too interested; her Oxford diary pays more attention to boys than to books. As she was shy, quiet, and facing her first only nominally-chaperoned co- educational environment, Pym invented a persona to face the opposite sex: the dashing and adventurous Sandra.

The author-editors, Costas Hadjipate­ ras and Maria Fafalios, already well known for their records of Greece at war - Testimonies '40- '41 and Testim­ onies '40-'44 - have now, in Crete 1941 Eyewitnessed, brought their skillful and tar-ranging technique to bear on the great island of its title. There is something epic and unique about Crete and several things single out the German parachute invasion and its aftermath from similar sequences of episodes. One ofthese is the fact that the battle against the invaders, though it was lost in the end, was so hard-fought and destructive that it was the last as well as the first major parachute on­ slaught the Germans ever launched. The second feature was the spontaneous participation, in the absence on the mainland of the Fifth Cretan Division, of any Cretan of any age who could lay his hands on a gun. The grim pattern of resistance and reprisal was set from the moment the first enemy parachutist touched ground. This remarkable book is a well chosen, informal assembly of eye­ witness accounts, from a great array of participants: British and Greek soldiers, Australians, New Zealand and Empire troops, Cretan mountaineers, doctors, civilians and the invading Germans themselves. The best of these last are from Daedalus Returns, by Baron von der Heydte, who commanded the first parachute wave to be dropped.

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

Although there is an abundance of Greek-language scholarship regarding the occupation and resistance fighters, much of it is confined within an accusatory political discourse that obscures historical realities and the nuances of the Greek resistance. Further compounding the limited nature of this scholarship is that Anglophone works regarding the topic are routinely dominated by narratives anchored by the Nazi enterprise, typically to garner a broader audience. What emerges from Spyros Tsoutsoumpis’s book, A History of the Greek Resistance, is a rich study that acts as a corrective to these historiographical shortcomings. In this well-written and provocative study, Tsoutsoumpis meticulously weaves together archival sources, memoirs, and oral histories to unearth the complex nature of the Greek resistance, from internal organization to the motivations that drove individuals to join as well as defect from guerilla bands.

The failures compelled the Ottoman state to change its socio- economic and political structure. As a result of this transition of the state structure, which brought about a so-called “redistribution of power” in the empire, new Ottoman elites emerged from 1683 until the 1750s. We have divided the above time span into three stages that will greatly help us com- prehend the Ottoman transition from sultanic authority to numerous autonomies of first Muslim, then non-Muslim elites of the Ottoman Empire. During the first period (1683–1699) we see the emergence of Muslim power players at the expense of sultanic authority. In the second stage (1699–1730) we observe the sultans’ unsuccessful attempts to revive their authority. In the third period (1730–1750) we witness the emergence of non-Muslim notables who gradually came into power with the help of both the sultans and external powers. At the end of this last stage, not only did the authority of Ottoman sultans decrease enormously, but a new era evolved where Muslim and non-Muslim leading figures both fought and co-operated with one another for a new distribution of wealth in the Ottoman Empire.

  • Revolutionary Reckonings
    COMMENTARY had a fixation with the event. They declared their dictatorship to be a “national-salvationist revolu- tion” (ethnosotirios epanastasis) that would com- plete the work of its predecessor. In 1971, the 150th anniversary of the uprising, more than 300 books were published on the subject – an astonishing number dwarfing that of any year before or since. The nation’s classrooms rang with the exhortation: “Long live the revolution of 25 March 1821! Long live the revolution of 21 April 1967!” It was ironic to watch an authoritarian military Junta heroizing a bunch of unruly and quarrelsome chieftains who had been united by few things stronger than their loathing for the idea of a regular army. But the pre- dictable result of turning 1821 into fascist kitsch was that by the time the colonels fell from power in 1974, everyone was fed up with the subject. This explains why, amid the truly remarkable resurgence in historical studies in Greece that took place with the restoration of democracy, the subject of its independence struggle was initially neglected. An exception was the scholarly journal Mnimon, which consistently published high-calibre research on the subject. Just three years ago, it published not one but two important volumes of essays on the Greek revolution. These signalled an end to the neglect of the recent past and showcased a younger generation of historians that was finding new rea- sons for returning to 1821. One of these volumes is a collective tribute to the late historian Despoina Themeli-Katifori, who had contributed to the journal from the start.

The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.
