Compiled by Valerie Garr, [email protected] The University of Iowa, College of Nursing Diversity Office (Updated 7/31/13 VSG) IMPORTANT: This is an evolving list of potential scholarship resources for students who are one of or in combination of the following: minority, underrepresented, first generation, female, or undocumented, This list includes scholarship and financial aid resource information from sources predominantly not connected to the University of Iowa. Thus, unless noted, the University of Iowa does not determine award criteria, dollar amounts, application procedures, deadlines, or future renewal. This scholarship information may be helpful in assisting prospective and current students with their pursuit to finance a college education. The websites listed have been checked for authenticity but the UI is not responsible for the content, updating of, or access to any of these websites unless they are official UI links. It is recommended that you use this listing and the other information provided as a supplement to filing the FAFSA. Tips for Getting Scholarships and Other Financial Aid: • Work hard to get and maintain good grades in school • Perform as well as you can on your ACT, SAT, GRE etc… • Start early looking for scholarship money: internet, library, your community etc... • If a scholarship requires a letter of recommendation, ask your teacher/professor or counselor/advisor; someone who knows your academic ability in the classroom • If a scholarship requires you to write an essay, have a teacher/professor or counselor /advisor read your essay before you submit a final version; be prepared to re-write before final submission • Read the scholarship forms, applications, and deadlines carefully and follow instructions as indicated—Look for scholarships a YEAR In ADVANCE of your need! • File your FAFSA electronically as soon as possible after January 1st. • Complete a FAFSA each year that you are in college and follow through on submitting all of the required documents for financial aid—check with your school’s financial aid office about required documents • Ask questions when you are unsure Tips To Protect Yourself From Scholarship Scams: http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/scams.phtml • If you must pay money to get money, it might be a scam, unless purchasing a book on scholarships or aid • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • Spend the time, not the money, looking for scholarships: • Never invest more than a postage stamp to get information about scholarships • No one can guarantee that you will win a scholarship • Check the credibility of scholarship websites and/or other internet sources 1 Scholarships For Diverse Populations Compiled by VGarr, University of Iowa College of Nursing---July 2013 University of Iowa Scholarship Resources (July 2013/VSG/University of Iowa; www.uiowa.edu; Diversity) University of Iowa Advantage Iowa Award (Undergraduate Students) For first-year students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment • Minimum Requirements: The award is based on merit (test scores, GPA, class rank). Criteria may include one or more of these: student's race/ethnic background; participation in a federally funded Upward Bound program. • Value: $2,000 to $8,000 (amount may increase if the student demonstrates need through the financial aid application process –FAFSA + other required documents- See UI Office of Student Financial Aid website for financial aid filing process: http://www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/ ) • Application Process: None. Students are considered automatically upon admission. • Renewal: You can receive this award for up to four years or until you receive your bachelor’s degree (whichever comes first), providing you maintain continuous full-time erollment and a 2.50 cumulative UI GPA. • Additional Requirements: Meet with a staff member from the Center for Diversity & Enrichment once in your first semester. Attend a minimum of three programs approved by the Center for Diversity & Enrichment each academic year. These programs may be academic, cultural, or social in nature and are open to all community members.
