Scholarship Resources for Minority Students Welcome to Scholarship Resources for Diverse Populations! Compiled by Valerie Garr, [email protected] The University of Iowa, College of Nursing Diversity Office (Updated 7/31/13 VSG) IMPORTANT: This is an evolving list of potential scholarship resources for students who are one of or in combination of the following: minority, underrepresented, first generation, female, or undocumented, This list includes scholarship and financial aid resource information from sources predominantly not connected to the University of Iowa. Thus, unless noted, the University of Iowa does not determine award criteria, dollar amounts, application procedures, deadlines, or future renewal. This scholarship information may be helpful in assisting prospective and current students with their pursuit to finance a college education. The websites listed have been checked for authenticity but the UI is not responsible for the content, updating of, or access to any of these websites unless they are official UI links. It is recommended that you use this listing and the other information provided as a supplement to filing the FAFSA. Tips for Getting Scholarships and Other Financial Aid: • Work hard to get and maintain good grades in school • Perform as well as you can on your ACT, SAT, GRE etc… • Start early looking for scholarship money: internet, library, your community etc... • If a scholarship requires a letter of recommendation, ask your teacher/professor or counselor/advisor; someone who knows your academic ability in the classroom • If a scholarship requires you to write an essay, have a teacher/professor or counselor /advisor read your essay before you submit a final version; be prepared to re-write before final submission • Read the scholarship forms, applications, and deadlines carefully and follow instructions as indicated—Look for scholarships a YEAR In ADVANCE of your need! • File your FAFSA electronically as soon as possible after January 1st. • Complete a FAFSA each year that you are in college and follow through on submitting all of the required documents for financial aid—check with your school’s financial aid office about required documents • Ask questions when you are unsure Tips To Protect Yourself From Scholarship Scams: http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/scams.phtml • If you must pay money to get money, it might be a scam, unless purchasing a book on scholarships or aid • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • Spend the time, not the money, looking for scholarships: • Never invest more than a postage stamp to get information about scholarships • No one can guarantee that you will win a scholarship • Check the credibility of scholarship websites and/or other internet sources 1 Scholarships For Diverse Populations Compiled by VGarr, University of Iowa College of Nursing---July 2013 University of Iowa Scholarship Resources (July 2013/VSG/University of Iowa; www.uiowa.edu; Diversity) University of Iowa Advantage Iowa Award (Undergraduate Students) For first-year students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment • Minimum Requirements: The award is based on merit (test scores, GPA, class rank). Criteria may include one or more of these: student's race/ethnic background; participation in a federally funded Upward Bound program. • Value: $2,000 to $8,000 (amount may increase if the student demonstrates need through the financial aid application process –FAFSA + other required documents- See UI Office of Student Financial Aid website for financial aid filing process: http://www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/ ) • Application Process: None. Students are considered automatically upon admission. • Renewal: You can receive this award for up to four years or until you receive your bachelor’s degree (whichever comes first), providing you maintain continuous full-time erollment and a 2.50 cumulative UI GPA. • Additional Requirements: Meet with a staff member from the Center for Diversity & Enrichment once in your first semester.     ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ VOL. 2, # 3 MARCH, 2020 NFIA LAUNCHES A NEW INTERNSHIP PROGRAM NATIONALLY DURING SUMMER SCHOOL BREAK: In an effort to involve youth to work during summer with NFIA, when school is out, and also with elected officials, an internship program is planned. Program’s goal is to cultivate promising and interested youth through innovative leadership opportunities to help build a pipeline of future leaders for NFIA and or the community at large – a pipeline of great and innovative minds who may help in getting the message of NFIA out – a message of civic leadership and community engagement. In order to test-drive the program, a small batch of students, between the ages of 18- 29, will be selected in four to five locations. NFIA hopes that internship program and its benefits to students may bring new interest from parents and students and they may try to look for NFIA’s mission and its interest in community building. A service to the community that has provided the Indian immigrants to build a career here in the United States of America and now these individuals are capable and willing in helping the community first by being good citizens of this land of opportunity, also by being successful as entrepreneurs who are capable of creating employment opportunities for others, and are interested in paying back to the community that has helped them to climb the professional, educational, and career ladder. Students identified in different areas will have coordinators who will help them succeed during their internship period, counsel them, and at the end of their internship officially and publicly award a certificate of completion from NFIA.

This paper attempts to examine and analyze a stand-up comedy and two sitcoms respectively, by focusing on two specific questions: How do their performances construct a sense of their own identity as Canadians or as Americans? Through adaptive agency women select and incorporate widely legible elements of hegemonic, racialized tropes of womanhood in their cultural, narrative or embodied forms of self-representation. These adaptive choices can be traced across different kinds of archival material and thus reveal how Arab American women positioned themselves in the US cultural sphere.

Fondly known as “kaka” within the FIA, Patel was a force to reckon with. A veteran community leader in the U.S. for over 50 years, Patel served the Indian diaspora selflessly and wholeheartedly through FIA, one of the largest umbrella organizations in the Indian community, as well as through the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA), and other regional and cultural organizations, by serving at various positions during the past five decades.

    South Asian Migration to the U.S. Syllabus The Center for Asian American Studies, The University of Texas at Austin AAS325 (35865) /ANS372 (31540) /HIS365G (39545) Fall 2011 Instructor: Amber H. Abbas Course Description: This course will introduce students to the major themes in Asian American Studies including Migration, Assimilation, Acculturation, Multiculturalism, Discrimination, Gender and Sexuality. The course begins with an examination of the push-pull factors of migration by looking at the broader world of South Asian migration worldwide. Our study quickly narrows in on the early Sikh migration to the American West Coast. The liberalization of American immigration law in the 1960s provides the platform for continuing the discussion of push-pull factors of migration and sets the stage for a thorough examination of the 1960s migration of South Asian Americans from various states in the subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal). These migrants and their offspring populate the remainder of our study as we examine the particulars of their experience. Our study will break these problems down into thematic units: family, youth, the elderly, labor and work, depictions in popular culture, gender and sexuality and faith. In several final sessions of the class, we will look beyond America’s effect on South Asian emigrants to the effect of South Asians on American culture. Ultimately, we will consider the implications and possibilities of the new trend of Return wherein South Asian Americans consider pursuing careers in the land of their parents’ or grandparents’ birth. This course carries the flag for Cultural Diversity in the United States. Cultural Diversity courses are designed to increase your familiarity with the variety and richness of the American cultural experience.
