HIGHLIGHTING THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENT-ATHLETES The Blue Ribbon WINTER 2016 January 2016 Dear DePaul Community, As the university settles into the new year, Athletic Academic Advising and the Department of Athletics are proud to share our Blue Ribbon Newsletter. This annual publication highlights the academic achievements of DePaul student-athletes during the 2014-2015 academic year. Numerous student-athletes received academic accolades last year, which are detailed in the newsletter. We are especially pleased that 163 student-athletes were named to the 2014-2015 BIG EAST All- Academic Team by earning a 3.0 or higher GPA for the year. The program as a whole recorded a 3.458 GPA. Eight teams earned the highest GPA in the BIG EAST Conference for their respective sport— women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, golf, women’s soccer, softball and women’s tennis—the most in the conference. Additionally, both our women’s basketball and softball teams earned the third highest GPA in the nation for their respective sport. 2015-2016 is off to a great start as well. 163 student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0 or higher term GPA) and 118 to the DePaul University Dean’s List (3.5 or higher term GPA) after Fall Quarter. Also, Elise Wyatt from women’s soccer was named to the CoSIDA 2015 Academic All-America Women’s Soccer First Team—the only student-athlete from the conference to be recognized on the first team. -

Eighty percent of our McNair students are going on to graduate school within three years.” DePaul is also taking additional steps to ensure low-income and first-generation students are better prepared for college success. “We recently shifted our remedial coursework to the summer before college and made it free of charge,” Fr. Holtschneider stated. He explained how DePaul completely redesigned some of its gateway courses, particularly math-heavy courses that put students at risk of dropping out of college if they fail. When asked by Rep. Timothy Bishop (D- NY) about simplifying the student aid process, Fr. Holtschneider said, “Simplification is always attractive in its own right. [TRIO eligibility] should simply follow Pell [needs- based grant] eligibility. I have staff dedicated to determining eligibility. We could take the funds being used to determine eligibility and apply them to other uses.” Fr. Holtschneider also addressed some inflexibility in TRIO program requirements in his written testimony. -
