Griffey’s Game-Winning Three Lifts Illini Past Gardner-Webb Illinois received a strong test from Gardner-Webb on Nov. 26, but the Illini made key plays down the stretch to pull out a 63-62 win. Illinois trailed for much of the first half and faced a five-point deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining. A 7-0 run seemed to have the Illini in control with 6:30 left, but Gardner-Webb made a comeback of its own, setting the stage for a memorable final minute that saw the lead exchange hands four times. The Illini led 58-56 when Kevin Hartley made a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left to put the Bulldogs ahead by one. Brandon Paul answered by hitting a driving bank shot that put the Illini back on top with :39 remaining. Tashan Newsome then banked in a 3-pointer from the top with :14 left of the key to give Gardner-Webb a two-point lead. Following an Illinois timeout, Tyler Griffey nailed a 3-pointer from 24 feet with 4.4 seconds left. That proved to be the game-winner, as Newsome’s shot at the buzzer was short. The 2009 Illini recruiting class did most of the work in this game, with Griffey, Paul, D.J. Richardson and Joseph Bertrand combining for 52 of Illinois’ 63 points, each scoring 13.

Overall, Illinois returns 70.7 percent of its points, Butler, 11/21/12 69.3 percent of its rebounds, and 72.4 percent of its minutes played from the 2011-12 campaign. 20-24 points V. 8 // 2012-13 Illinois Fighting Illini Basketball top 3-point shooter, nailing 71 treys. Another senior the Illini will rely on is forward Tyler Griffey, who averaged 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds last year. Griffey scored in double figures four times, led by a career-high 18 points at Michigan. Junior Joseph Bertrand enjoyed a breakout season last year, averaging 6.5 points to rank fourth on the team. His coming-out party came in the Braggin’ Rights game, where he scored 19 points on 9-of-9 shooting versus Missouri. Bertrand also netted a career-high 25 points against Nebraska. The heart and soul of the team is sophomore Tracy Abrams, who was voted the team’s most valuable player by his teammates last season in becoming the first true- freshman in school history to be named Illini MVP. Abrams earned 19 starts, averaging 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. Sophomore Nnanna Egwu gained valuable experience last season as a true freshman, playing nearly 10 minutes per game as a reserve behind Meyers Leonard while also competing against Leonard each day in practice. Like Egwu, sophomores Myke Henry, Mike Shaw and Ibby Djimde, as well as redshirt-freshman Devin Langford, will have the opportunity to compete for expanded roles this year after adjusting to the rigors of the college game last season. Also returning for the Illini is junior Kevin Berardini, who is now in his third year as a walk-on.

New Faces While the Illini do not add any scholarship freshmen to the roster, there are three new additions to this year’s team. Fifth-year senior Sam McLaurin graduated from Coastal Carolina in May and is eligible to play immediately due to NCAA graduate transfer rules. McLaurin will bolster the UI frontcourt after averaging 10.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks last season for the Chanticleers, while shooting 65.2 percent from the field. Hometown product Rayvonte Rice returns after starring the last two seasons at Drake. Rice will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules, then will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Illini. Rice nearly reached the 1,000-point mark in just two seasons at Drake, totaling 983 points. He averaged 16.8 points and 5.8 rebounds last season, earning second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors while leading the MVC in steals at 1.9 per game. Rice led Centennial High School to a state title as a junior in 2009, and finished his prep career as the all-time leading scorer in Champaign-Urbana history. The final newcomer is freshman Mike LaTulip, who turned down scholarship opportunities elsewhere to join the Illini as a preferred walk-on. LaTulip averaged 22 points as a senior at Prospect High School, making 75 three-pointers on the season while shooting nearly 39 percent from behind the arc.

Leonard a Lottery Pick The Illini look to fill a big opening in the middle of the lineup previously occupied by Meyers Leonard. Following an impressive sophomore campaign where he ranked second on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg), third in the Big Ten in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and led the conference in blocked shots (1.6 bpg), Leonard declared for the NBA Draft in April. Leonard was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 11 overall pick, becoming the third Illinois player selected in the lottery and 15th first-round pick in school history, and the highest drafted player since 2005, when was taken third overall.

D-Will Wins Gold Again Deron Williams helped lead Team USA to another gold medal at the 2012 Olympics. Williams was one of just five players from the 2008 U.S. team that won gold in Beijing to win a second gold medal in London, joined by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul. An All-America point guard for the Fighting Illini and current NBA star of the Brooklyn Nets, Williams is just the third Illinois athlete in school history and first in more than 50 years to win two Olympic gold medals. Also representing the Illini basketball program was former player and alum Jerry Colangelo, the managing director of USA Basketball’s Senior National Team and architect behind Team USA’s second-straight gold medal performance.

Historic Night for BP3 Brandon Paul scored a career-high 43 points in Illinois’ 79-74 win over No. 5 Ohio State last season at the Assembly Hall. It marked the third-highest scoring performance in school history and tied the fifth-highest single-game total in the NCAA on the season. It also was the most points by a Big Ten player in 18 years. Paul was incredibly efficient in the game, hitting 11-of-15 shots, including 8-of-10 3-pointers, and 13-of-15 from the line. He became the first NCAA player in the last 16 seasons with 43+ points on 15 or fewer field goal attempts. And his eight 3-pointers tied the Illini school record. Paul scored Illinois’ final 15 points of the game over the last 2:40, outscoring the Buckeyes 15-8 down the stretch. Paul was an obvious choice for individual accolades following the scoring explosion. He was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and Big Ten Player of the Week by the conference office.

Bertrand with Pair of Impressive Field Goal Streaks Joseph Bertrand had two streaks of consecutive made baskets that reached double-figures last season. He made 13 consecutive shots from Dec. 22-27, hitting all nine of his attempts against Missouri and his first four attempts against Minnesota before finally missing. He then had a streak of 12 consecutive made shots from Jan. 4-7, connecting on all four of his second-half attempts at Northwestern and his first eight attempts vs. Nebraska before missing. Bertrand’s streaks were the Illini’s best over the last 29 years, but did not set a school record. The Illinois mark still belongs to Derek Harper, who made 19 consecutive shots over a three-game stretch in 1983.

Paul one of Big Ten’s Top Scorers Brandon Paul was one of the Big Ten’s leading scorers during conference play, averaging 17.7 points to rank third on the league list. Paul scored in double figures in all but two Big Ten games, with seven outings of 20 or more points. Paul recorded the highest scoring average by an Illini player in conference action since Brian Cook won the Big Ten scoring title in 2003, averaging 20.0 points.

Taking Down Two Top-10 Foes Illinois recorded a pair of Top-10 wins last season, defeating No. 5 Ohio State on Jan. 10 and No. 9 Michigan State on Jan. 31. State on Jan. 31. The UI was one of just 13 programs to defeat multiple Top-10 opponents during the 2011-12 regular season:

So Many Close Calls Illinois was involved in 14 games decided by five points or less last season. That tally did not include the first Minnesota game, which was tied at the end of regulation (final margin in double OT was nine points). Illinois had eight straight games decided by five points or less from Jan. 4 through Feb. 5. That was the UI’s longest streak of the modern era and its longest in 83 years, since the Illini also had eight straight games decided by five or less during Big Ten play in 1929. It also was the nation’s longest streak last season. The Illini went 11-8 in games decided by single digits and 7-7 in games decided by five or less. Illinois’ seven victories by five points or less were the most since the 1998-99 Illini won eight in that fashion.
