Borrowdale of Mag- dalena, New Mexico, there came to the State Museum in Jan- uary, 1920, a large collection which the donor had gradually assembled from the time of his first arrival in New Mexico in the year 1880. The collection comprises many articles of archaeological and ethnological value, including old Indian pottery, arrow heads, beads and charms, basketry, etc., but the part of the collection in which Mr. Borrowdale took especial pride was that consisting of edged weapons and firearms. The latter show an almost complete historical series from the Revolu- tionary period down to the present, besides a number of weap- ons of even earlier periods. The Museum is especially fortunate to have had the help of Mr. P. S. Curtis, Jr., in preparing the catalog which is herewith presented. Mr. Curtis is a Yale graduate, headmas- ter of the boys' school at Los Alamos Ranch, and his expert knowledge on weapons has enabled him to make the catalog both accurate and readable. Orientalist attitudes shaped exhibitions and museum displays that portrayed ancient Egypt as a place of gilded, strange trinkets, while monuments such as obelisks were taken as trophies and mummies were treated as objects rather than human remains. Even the field of Egyptology emerged outside of Egypt from the creation of Western scholars who thought that they not only understood Egypt on a deeper level than the Egyptians themselves but also assumed that they could preserve the antiquities better.

  • Swords and Daggers
    Swords and Daggers Swords are weapons formed by a blade (the part intended for striking) and a hilt (from which the sword is held) [Fig. 1]. While there have been swords made of wood and stone, the more predominant and effective examples have been made of some sort of metal. Bronze was used in ancient times, followed by iron and then steel. Daggers are a more primitive, much smaller weapon which share many features with the sword. As a general rule, knives have a single edge. Blade The sword’s blade can be divided between the forte (third of the blade closer to the hilt) and the foible (third of the blade closer to the tip). This refers to how much strength the wielder can put into each area of the blade when used as a lever. The part of the blade that becomes narrow and goes into the grip is called the tang [Fig. 2]. The point of balance [Fig. 3] is the sword’s center of gravity, often found on the blade very close to the hilt, and influences the handling of the weapon. The center of percussion [Fig. 3] is the area of the blade that produces the least amount of vibration when striking a target, and thus is the ideal place with which to strike. The cross-section of the blade [Fig. 4] is the shape it has when cut at the guard. The fullers, incorrectly called blood grooves in modern times, were used to reduce the weight of the blade and give it structural strength.
