  • Museum of New Mexico. Catalog of the Borrowdale Collection
5693 I A3 ; ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF AMERICA PAPERS OF THE SCHOOL OF AMERICAN RESEARCH New SeriesNumber Three Catalog of the Borrowdale Collection NEW SERIES PAPER N<X 192 I The Borrowdale Collection By bequest of the late William M. Borrowdale of Mag- dalena, New Mexico, there came to the State Museum in Jan- uary, 1920, a large collection which the donor had gradually assembled from the time of his first arrival in New Mexico in the year 1880. The collection comprises many articles of archaeological and ethnological value, including old Indian pottery, arrow heads, beads and charms, basketry, etc., but the part of the collection in which Mr. Borrowdale took especial pride was that consisting of edged weapons and firearms. The latter show an almost complete historical series from the Revolu- tionary period down to the present, besides a number of weap- ons of even earlier periods. The Museum is especially fortunate to have had the help of Mr. P. S. Curtis, Jr., in preparing the catalog which is herewith presented. Mr. Curtis is a Yale graduate, headmas- ter of the boys' school at Los Alamos Ranch, and his expert knowledge on weapons has enabled him to make the catalog both accurate and readable. THE DIRECTOR Edged Weapons and Firearms IN The Borrowdale Collection. PART I--EDGED WEAPONS. 3147- Hand made ax, probably old Spanish. The handle is modern. 3148 Fire ax of the model used by early American volunteer firemen. 3149 -A cavalry sabre of the Empire of Napoleon I. Piranha Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death By Jonathan Lawton 2 FADE IN: EXT. - JUNGLE - DAY Two men, Fred and Sam, dressed in ragged explorer clothes and carrying half-full burlap bags, hack their way through a thick jungle with machetes. FRED We're lost. SAM No we're not. Look -- up there. He points ahead to a single avocado dangling from a tree. The two men furiously hack their way to the spot. Sam plucks it from the tree and carefully tucks it inside his burlap bag. FRED Let's head back, we're getting in too deep. SAM Wait! What's that sound? They both listen. We hear a waterfall cascading in the distance, and something else -- something odd -- the sound of women giggling. SAM Women. Laughing. FRED We'd better run. SAM No, don't be such a coward. Let's check it out. Sam presses onward through the jungle. Fred reluctantly follows. EXT. - WATERFALL - DAY A picturesque waterfall flows into a hidden lagoon. Playing in the waterfall, swimming nude in the lagoon, and (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 3 sunbathing on its edge are half a dozen Extremely Beautiful, Red-haired Women With Deep Green Eyes. They are all laughing, giggling, and rubbing suntan lotion sensuously on each other. Sam and Fred, well hidden in the jungle foliage, spy on them. SAM (whispering) Look at them. They're beautiful. Aren't they the most sensuous, lovely, inviting women you've ever seen? FRED We'd better run. SAM Run?! Are you kidding? Look at them. FRED They're dangerous.

I have intentionally omitted all reference to the sword and other weapons of offence, for this would have unduly increased the size of the present work, and the subject is of such importance that it deserves a full consideration in a separate volume.

THE WESTERN PERCEPTION OF ANCIENT EGYPT: THE DISCOVERY, SPECTACLE AND EXPOSITION OF KING TUTANKHAMUN A Thesis by Tonisha Bell Bachelor of Arts, Newman University, 2010 Submitted to the Department of History and the faculty of the Graduate School of Wichita State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts December 2017 © Copyright 2017 by Tonisha Bell All Rights Reserved THE WESTERN PERCEPTION OF ANCIENT EGYPT: THE DISCOVERY, SPECTACLE AND EXPOSITION OF KING TUTANKHAMUN The following faculty members have examined the final copy of this thesis for form and content, and recommend that it be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts with a major in History. Jay Price, Committee Chair Peer Moore-Jansen, Committee Member John Dreifort, Committee Member iii DEDICATION To my parents, Amy and Tony, to my best friend, Tiffany, to my uncle Joey, to Dr. Jay Price and all my family and friends, thank you so much iv ABSTRACT Since Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt, Western nations such as France, Britain, and the United States have displayed Egyptian antiquities as an exotic spectacle, creating the image of ancient Egypt that is known today. Orientalist attitudes shaped exhibitions and museum displays that portrayed ancient Egypt as a place of gilded, strange trinkets, while monuments such as obelisks were taken as trophies and mummies were treated as objects rather than human remains. Even the field of Egyptology emerged outside of Egypt from the creation of Western scholars who thought that they not only understood Egypt on a deeper level than the Egyptians themselves but also assumed that they could preserve the antiquities better.

  • Swords and Daggers
Swords and Daggers Swords are weapons formed by a blade (the part intended for striking) and a hilt (from which the sword is held) [Fig. 1]. While there have been swords made of wood and stone, the more predominant and effective examples have been made of some sort of metal. Bronze was used in ancient times, followed by iron and then steel. Daggers are a more primitive, much smaller weapon which share many features with the sword. As a general rule, knives have a single edge. Blade The sword’s blade can be divided between the forte (third of the blade closer to the hilt) and the foible (third of the blade closer to the tip). This refers to how much strength the wielder can put into each area of the blade when used as a lever. The part of the blade that becomes narrow and goes into the grip is called the tang [Fig. 2]. The point of balance [Fig. 3] is the sword’s center of gravity, often found on the blade very close to the hilt, and influences the handling of the weapon. The center of percussion [Fig. 3] is the area of the blade that produces the least amount of vibration when striking a target, and thus is the ideal place with which to strike. The cross-section of the blade [Fig. 4] is the shape it has when cut at the guard. The fullers, incorrectly called blood grooves in modern times, were used to reduce the weight of the blade and give it structural strength.

From the Publishers Desk Kumusta Marc Lawrence has put together a very good list and has added some comments about weapons that are known and used in the Philippines. Now I am sure there might be one or two that were not mentioned or that a further explanation could have been given, however you can only give what you get, find, borrow etc. Also while visiting the Philippines I usually run into someone that shows me a weapon that is or was used in the Philippines that I have never seen.
