She was introduced to wheelchair basketball when a group of her friends invited her to accompa- ny them to a demonstration game at the Quebec Games. A year later, a wheelchair basketball team was formed near where she lived. She has been on the national team since 1984, a year after she started playing the sport. She attributes her success in wheelchair basketball to her passion for the sport and her persistent need to improve every time she gets on the court. Before a big game, she relaxes by striking up conversations with people she doesn’t know. At a young age, Benoit lost a leg to cancer. Chantal Benoît vit selon la devise « Il faut aimer ce que l'on fait ». Son objectif pour Beijing est d'être la plus rapide et la plus forte possible. Elle s'est initiée au basketball en fauteuil roulant lorsqu'un groupe d'amis l'a invitée à les accom- pagner à une partie de démonstration aux Jeux du Québec. Un an plus tard, se constituait près de chez elle une équipe de basketball en fauteuil roulant. Elle fait partie de l'équipe nationale depuis 1984, un an après avoir commencé ce sport. Elle attribue son succès en basketball en fauteuil roulant à sa passion pour le sport et au besoin per- manent qu'elle a de s'améliorer, chaque fois qu'elle pénètre sur le terrain. Avant une partie impor- tante, elle se détend en engageant la conversation avec des personnes qu'elle ne connaît pas. Très jeune, Chantal a perdu une jambe à cause d'un cancer. She played wheelchair basketball recreationally for about 10 years before being introduced to international play. She joined Canada’s national team in 2007. She has a degree in Adaptive Physical Education and works as a recreational program manager. To prepare for a major competition, Feser focuses on the moment and task at hand. She tries to leave all distractions at home and off the court. Her other interests include golf, poker and reading. She would give her last $20 to someone who needed it. She assisted the team in bringing home three gold medals and one bronze medal. She is hoping to once again reach the podium with Team Canada at the 2008 Beijing Games. She began playing wheelchair basketball competitively when she was just 12 years old. She joined the national team in 1991. She attended the University of Illinois. A rare condition, arteriovenous malformation, that caused paralysis from her waist down has not changed her ambition of wanting to become a great athlete. She is focused on representing Canada, and winning the gold medal with the wheelchair basket- ball team. Before competing in wheelchair basketball, she was a Paralympic wheelchair racer. She began playing wheelchair basketball competitively in 1999. In 2005, she joined the Canadian women’s national wheelchair basketball team as an alternate, and in 2006 she became the first woman from Saskatchewan to be named to the team. She remembers getting clotheslined in her first game, which she jok- ingly describes as a warm welcome to the sport she loves. She completed her college studies last year, and is planning to go to university this fall. She also plans to keep up her training and continue to grow as an athlete. If she could eat dinner with anyone, she would dine with her sporting idol, Steven Gerrard, cap- tain of the Liverpool Football Club. She thinks he’s the most complete midfielder in the game. It is a fast-paced team game that attracts competitive athletes with physical disabilities that prevent them from running, jumping, and pivoting. Not all athletes who play wheelchair basketball require the use of a wheelchair for daily life. Open to male and female athletes, wheel- chair basketball requires two teams to play. Each team has twelve players with just five on court during playtime. The objective of each team is to score more points than the opposing team. Points are given for scoring goals by shooting the basketball into the opposing team’s basket. A goal scores from one to three points. Teams actively try to prevent the opposing team from making goals. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Each team is given 24 seconds to complete a goal attempt. If the team with the ball exceeds this time limit, then the ball and the right of play is granted to the opposing team. Goals are scored in the following way: • A free-throw goal = 1 point • A goal from the two-point field goal area = 2 points • A goal from the three-point field goal area = 3 points Wheelchair basketball games have four ten-minute periods with a 15-min- ute interval between the second and third period and one-minute intervals between the first and second, and third and fourth periods.
