Learning Objectives Mapping TeamCanada

 Students will discuss and identify key athletic figures from professional sport and the .

 Students will learn the about the Paralympic movement and the Canadian Paralympic Committee.

 Students will research and “get to know” key Canadian Paralympic Team athletes, gaining an understanding of their sport training, athleticism as well as inclusive sport opportunities.

Instruct students that they are a news reporter for the Paralympic Games. Have students create their own interview questions specific to the athlete their group researched. Instruct students that their questions should be related to the Mapping TeamCanada athlete participating at the Paralympic Games however they are encouraged to try to be as creative as possible. Ask students to share one of their interview questions with the class, remind them to try to share a unique question and not repeat the same questions.

In 2015, Zak Madell led Canada to gold at Mapping TeamCanada the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games and was named the flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony. The win earned Canada a berth at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Priscilla Gagné produced her first big international success in judo in 2015 when

she won the bronze medal in the B1 (visually Mapping TeamCanada impaired) 52 kilo class at a para-judo World Cup in Hungary which featured nearly 200 competitors from 31 countries. A few weeks later, she added a silver at the Parapan American Games in Toronto.

Gagné was born in Granby, Que., but moved to Sarnia, Ont., at age three. She was initially involved in wrestling but decided to switch to judo in 2010 because there were more ATHLETE PROFILE competitive opportunities. Legendary Canadian wheelchair racers André Mapping TeamCanada Viger and Chantal Petitclerc were big influences on Brent Lakatos who is currently carving his own path to greatness. It was Viger who introduced Lakatos to wheelchair racing and provided him with his first chair for the sport, a piece of equipment previously owned by Petitclerc.

From the moment he put on the gloves and pushed off, Lakatos has just kept going faster ATHLETE PROFILE and faster. Aurélie Rivard established herself as one of Mapping TeamCanada the top para-swimmers in the world in 2015 at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and the 2015 Toronto Parapan American Games.

In Toronto, she collected seven medals (six gold and one silver) including a world record performance in the 100-m freestyle. A few weeks earlier in Glasgow, she broke two Canadian records with victories in the 50-m ATHLETE PROFILE and 400-m freestyles.

In 2015, Janet McLachlan helped Canada to silver and a qualification for the 2016

Paralympic Games at the Parapan Am Games Mapping TeamCanada in Toronto.

She played stand-up basketball for the University of Victoria Vikes, winning national championships in 1998 and 2000. She was introduced to wheelchair basketball after suffering a serious knee injury while attempting to make Canada’s national rugby squad for the 2006 World Cup. Canada’s flag bearer at the Toronto 2015 Mapping TeamCanada Parapan American Games Opening Ceremony, Marco Dispaltro is a parasport legend. With a strong background in wheelchair tennis and wheelchair rugby, he exploded onto the boccia scene in May 2010 on the encouragement of head coach Mario Delisle. Dispaltro held a #1 world ranking in his classification entering the 2015 season and earned a silver medal in mixed pairs in Toronto at the Parapan American Games.
