Discover Palermo with Join Palermo’S Grand Revival at Villa Igiea DISCOVER PALERMO WITH JOIN PALERMO’S GRAND REVIVAL AT VILLA IGIEA When Ignazio Florio Junior decided to build a new hotel for the cosmopolitan elite in 1899, his intention was to have nothing as grandiose that could ever grace Palermo again. He envisaged a palazzo, a castle in the heart of the Conca d’Oro plain, surrounded by gardens where orange and olive trees flourish, where the aroma of the Mediterranean sweeps in and on the horizon, the blue sea changes colour every day. This historical Art Nouveau private palazzo turned into one of the most luxurious hotels in Sicily, a seaside-meets-city sanctuary for royalty, dignitaries and Hollywood luminaries visiting Palermo. In just a few weeks, Villa Igiea, as magnificent as when it first opened, will welcome its much prized new guests. Villa Igiea, Palermo 2 PALERMO, FLOURISHING FOREVER “ Who has once seen the sky of Palermo can never forget it.“ Palermo is more than just a city, it’s the history of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe the Mediterranean. Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs and Normans: each civilisation left its own invaluable mark creating a style that speaks of co-existence and sharing. Everyday Palermo is just as dazzling as its rich artistic heritage: with its markets, religious festivals, spectacular cuisine, heavenly cakes and pastries, and of course, the sparkling sea. This fascinating city is also the ideal starting point to explore Western Sicily. AN INTANGIBLE HERITAGE With three cathedrals, three churches, two palaces and a legendary bridge, the UNESCO World Heritage marvels in and around Palermo typifies the heady mix of cultures, art forms and architectural styles that infuse Sicily. Built in the Norman-dominated 12th century, they combine European, Islamic and Byzantine traditions in a striking display of mosaic and design. Together, the eight sites are a spectacular way to immerse yourself in Sicilian history. “You feel as if you were sitting in the heart of a huge nest, watching the angels sing.” Oscar Wilde The Cathedral of Palermo 4 San Cataldo and La Martorana Churches, Palermo 5 Mosaics at La Martorana Church, Palermo 6 WHERE ART AND MUSIC MEET Immerse yourself in Palermo’s arts scene at the Teatro Massimo and Teatro Politeama. A symbol of the city and the largest opera house in Italy, Teatro Massimo is an imposing Neoclassical music temple and the place to see international opera and ballet. A short walk through the city centre is Palermo’s other bastion of live performance, Teatro Politeama – home to the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and a diverse schedule of concerts and shows. Discover fried fish served in paper cones, vegetables in batter, roast calamari, Sicilian chickpea fritters known as panelle, croquettes and the well-loved rice balls, arancine. “The loveliest region of Italy: a stunning orgy of colors, scents, and lights… a great delight.” Sigmund Freud Capo street market, Palermo 12 The Cathedral of Palermo as seen from Via Porta di Castro 13 FROM THE CITY TO THE SEA A postcard-perfect island known for its miles of beautiful beaches, Sicily’s northern coast is especially blessed with spectacular stretches of sand – all within easy reach of Palermo city centre. Just west of the city is turquoise-watered Mondello Beach, a charming seaside location beloved by locals. Continuing along the coast, you’ll find the dramatic cliffs of Scopello, the white sands of San Vito Lo Capo and Sicily’s first natural reserve: Riserva dello Zingaro – a diverse ecological site famous for its hiking trails above miles of unblemished beach. Located in a special setting, full of history and culture, the charming city of Cefalù and its sandy beaches are definitely worth a visit. “And anyone who has once known this land can never be quite free from the nostalgia for it.” David Herbert Lawrence Cefalù. Sit back and enjoy Palermo’s renowned puppet theatre, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity-listed celebration of craftsmanship and folklore. Since the 16th century, the city’s skilled puppeteers have been bringing to life romantic poems, medieval tales and dramatic comedies through beautifully hand-carved wooden puppets. For the perfect sartorial souvenir, visit one of the city’s tailors for a handmade coppola (flat cap), a distinctive symbol of Sicilian men. Across the centuries, olive trees are the only cultivated plants that tell the story of Mediterranean landscapes. The same as stone monuments, these green monuments represent a real Mediterranean natural and cultural heritage. The aim of this paper is to discuss the value of monumental trees as “biocultural heritage” elements and the role they play in Citation: Schicchi, R.; Speciale, C.; the interpretation of the historical stratification of the landscape.

  • Download the Things to Do in Palermo PDF
Things to do in Palermo Palermo is the regional capital of Sicily, which is the largest and most heavily populated (about 5,000,000) island in the Mediterranean. The area has been under numerous dominators over the centuries, including Roman, Carthaginian, Byzantine, Greek, Arab, Norman, Swabian and Spanish masters. Due to this past and to the cultural exchange that for millennia has taken place in the area, the city is still an exotic mixture of many cultures. Many of the monuments still exist and are giving the city an unique appearance. The city of Palermo, including the province of Palermo, has around 1,300,000 inhabitants and has about 200 Km of coastline. The old town of Palermo is one of the largest in Europe, full of references to the past. Palermo reflects the diverse history of the region in that the city contains many masterpieces from different periods, including romanesche, gothic, renaissance and baroque architecture as well as examples of modern art. The city also hosts it's rich vegetation of palm trees, prickly pears, bananas, lemon trees and so on. The abundance of exotic species was also noticed by the world- famous German writer Goethe who in April 1787 visited the newly opened botanical gardens, describing them as "the most beautiful place on earth". Below, we would like to provide you with some useful information and advices about things to do and see during your stay in Palermo. We are happy to provide any further information you might require. • THE PLEASURES of WESTERN SICILY TOUR We Are Delighted To
SECRET ITALIA TOURS Unique Small group tours since 2008 THE PLEASURES OF WESTERN SICILY TOUR We are delighted to feature a unique small group tours to discover the spicy Western Sicily : The Pleasures of Western Sicily. Sicily may be Italian, but the islanders are Latin only by adoption. The greatest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily was for centuries the centre of the known world. Its geographic position made it vulnerable to attacks by foreigners, but also a meeting place of civilisations, a bridge between East and West. Sicily is an island with a unique identity and rich historical past. A melting pot of different cultures, traditions and architectural styles as well as beautiful landscapes and a coastline, which is home to some of Italy’s most stunning beaches. The most African of the island’s landscapes, the North West saw a cultural melting pot of Phoenicians, Greeks and Arabs settling in Sicily. Their stamp remains. Incontestably some of the island’s most charismatic ancient sites are also to be found in the West, the Greek temple and theater in Segesta, surrounded by rolling meadowland and the Phoenecian site on the island of Mozia, just off Marsala. Selinunte’s Doric columns are special too, as is the Phoenician ruin of Solunto, perched on the slopes of Montecatalfano. But be prepared for contrast. From the vibrant port town of Trapani you can take a boat across to Sicily’s captivating Egadi islands or a cable car which whisks you up into the medieval walled town of Erice where you can almost feel that you have been transported to Tuscany.

Flânerie between global north-south metropolis on the traces of migrant architectural models ANNA IRENE DEL MONACO, FRANCESCO MENEGATTI Sapienza Università di Roma; Politecnico di Milano [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract: Theaters around the world are linked by architectural features besides programs and music. (AIDM: A.I. Del Monaco; FM: Francesco Menegatti) The conversation begins by commenting on the concert by Martha Argerich and Daniel Baremboim with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala held in Piazza Duomo on May 12, 2016 in Milan. The Concerto in Sol by Ravel is scheduled in the program. The hybrid Neoclassicism of theaters in the modern city between the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries: the Teatro alla Scala in Milan - the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires - the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow - the Sans Souci Theater in Kolkata - the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. AIDM: The Argerich-Baremboim concert and the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra set up in Piazza Duomo en plein air with 40,000 spectators seems to have been a great success. The two ultra-seventies artists, born in Argentina, seemed at their ease ... two classical music stars within the scenography of Milan urban scenes ... the Cathedral on the right of the stage and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in front of the orchestra. This shows how the urban architecture of Italian historical cities, even when it is composed of architectures from different eras, is able to represent a perfect stage, both formal and informal, and the music is always done on the street, en plein air, as we learn, among other things, from the quintet of Luigi Boccherini of 1780 Night music on the streets of Madrid.

Il Quaternario Italian Journal of Quaternary Sciences 18(1), 2005 - Volume Speciale, 137-143 THE MAIN GEOMORPHOSITES OF THE EGADI ISLANDS (SICILY, ITALY) Raniero Massoli-Novelli Via della Mendola, 85 00135 Roma, Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: R. Massoli-Novelli, The main geomorphosites of the Egadi Islands (Sicily, Italy). (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2005). This article describes the main geological and geomorphological features of the three main Egadi Islands: Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. These islands, which are essentially made up of Mesozoic carbonate rocks, are considered as the continuation in the sea of the north-western Sicilian chain. In addition, the main geomorphosites of these three islands are identified for the first time: these are the numerous, significant coastal caves. Particular emphasis is given to natural and anthropogenetic geomorphosites related to the Pleistocene bioclastic calcarenite caves present in Favignana, an ancient site of intense quarrying activities. RIASSUNTO: R. Massoli-Novelli, I principali geomorfositi delle Isole Egadi (Sicilia, Italia). (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2005). Keywords: Geomorphosites, Calcarenite, Egadi Islands, Italy. Parole chiave: Geomorfositi, Calcarenite, Egadi, Italia.
