Day 1 Monday 4th June 28°C, humid Andy was able to meet the whole group at T5, Heathrow, before departure on our flight to Zagreb, which arrived on time. Baggage reclaim was straightforward, so we soon met up with Gerard, our local guide, who had worked with Andy on several previous tours. Water and fruit was handed out, so things were going well. We were, however, held up in the airport car park for a while, by some malfunctioning technology, followed by a rather lengthy traffic jam on the motorway. However, butterflies viewed from the slowly moving bus, included probable Lesser Purple Emperor! We left the motorway to go cross country through many small villages, all with several successful White Stork nests. Our first stop near Purinan, in a sort of lay-by near a river, was full of interest, with Wood Whites, Holly and (almost certainly) Chapman’s Blues, Map butterfly, female Large Copper and dozens of Nine-spotted moths. The latter were a feature of our journey in this area, being almost continuously visible from the bus. On the hilly sections it rapidly became clear the bus was seriously underpowered for 17 people plus the luggage trailer, and we had to get out on one occasion for a short walk! Our poor driver, Levi, did a heroic and skilful job in keeping us going.

  • Responses of Insect Herbivores and Herbivory to Habitat Fragmentation: a Hierarchical Meta-Analysis
Ecology Letters, (2017) 20: 264–272 doi: 10.1111/ele.12723 REVIEW AND SYNTHESIS Responses of insect herbivores and herbivory to habitat fragmentation: a hierarchical meta-analysis Abstract Marıa Rosa Rossetti,1,* Teja Loss and fragmentation of natural habitats can lead to alterations of plant–animal interactions Tscharntke,2 Ramiro Aguilar3,4 and and ecosystems functioning. Insect herbivory, an important antagonistic interaction is expected to Peter Batary 2 be influenced by habitat fragmentation through direct negative effects on herbivore community richness and indirect positive effects due to losses of natural enemies. Plant community changes with habitat fragmentation added to the indirect effects but with little predictable impact. Here, we evaluated habitat fragmentation effects on both herbivory and herbivore diversity, using novel hierarchical meta-analyses. Across 89 studies, we found a negative effect of habitat fragmentation on abundance and species richness of herbivores, but only a non-significant trend on herbivory. Reduced area and increased isolation of remaining fragments yielded the strongest effect on abun- dance and species richness, while specialist herbivores were the most vulnerable to habitat frag- mentation. These fragmentation effects were more pronounced in studies with large spatial extent. The strong reduction in herbivore diversity, but not herbivory, indicates how important common generalist species can be in maintaining herbivory as a major ecosystem process. Municipality of Volvi Integrated strategic waste management planning in Volvi Municipality Th. Valkouma, D. Kintsakis ATHENS2017 5th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, Athens, 21–24 June 2017 Integrated strategic waste management planning in the Municipality of Volvi The Municipality of Volvi is situated in the Region of Central Macedonia in Northern Greece. It was set up in 2011 through the unification of six separate municipalities and their communities: Agios Georgios – Apollonia – Arethousa – Egnatia – Madytos – Rentina. The municipal area is 782 km2 and it has approx. 24.000 inhabitants. The seat of the municipality is the town of Stavros, where the municipal council is also based. It was named after Lake Volvi, which dominates the centre of the municipal territory. One of its main characteristics is its rich natural environment which combines 20km of sea coastline, rivers, lake Volvi and also mountainous and semi mountainous areas with dense vegetation. ATHENS2017 5th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, Athens, 21–24 June 2017 Integrated strategic waste management planning in the Municipality of Volvi Lake Volvi is the second largest lake in Greece and the biggest in northern Greece. It is about 12 miles (19 km) in length, and 6 to 8 miles (9.7 to 12.9 km) wide. The area of the lake is 68 km² and the depth is 20 m. In the vicinity of the lake, 336 kinds of plants have been recorded, 13 of them are considered to be extremely rare. Also, 24 species of fishes, 19 amphibian species, 34 mammal species and over 200 species of birds.
