THE POPLARS, CHESTER-LE-STREET BY THE WAY Secretaries of Societies and other contributors to "The Vasculum" are invited to send their notes to the Editor before 15th June, 1967. OBITUARY NOTICE PROFESSOR JOHN WILLIAM HESLOP HARRISON, D.SC., F.R.S., F.R.S.E. On January 23rd 1967, Professor J. W. Heslop Harrison passed away at the age of 86, at his home in Birtley. After graduating at Armstrong College, University of Durham in 1903, he became a science master at Middlesbrough High School. During these school- teaching years, he carried on with his researches in his spare time. It was not long before his abilities in field studies, in both plants and insects, became widely known. It is not surprising, therefore, to find him returning to the University as a lecturer in zoology in 1919. His subsequent rise to fame was phenomenal. In 1926 he was appointed to a personal Readership in Genetics, the only one there has ever been at Newcastle. In 1927 he was appointed to the Chair of Botany, then in the very next year he gained his greatest distinction by becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society. During all this time and indeed until only a few years ago, research papers flowed from his pen at an unbelievable rate. His name must have appeared in every journal of biological subjects at one time or another. In addition, it must be remembered that he was one of the four founder editors of the "Vasculum" in 1915, one of the founder members of the Wallis Club in 1922, one of the founder members of the Northern Naturalists' Union in 1924 and the first Vice-President of the Naturalists' Trust of Northumberland and Durham. -

The National Rail Enquiries (NRE) website appears to have coped well with very high volumes 2. The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies (TOCs) 3. The online journey planners on TOC and third-party websites did not generally reflect the contingency timetables in operation 4. Tickets continued to be available for sale online for many trains that would not run 5. Station displays appear to have reflected formal contingency timetables, except for Southeastern 6. Station displays and online Live Departure Boards did not always keep pace with events 7. The NRE call centres appear to have provided good information, but queuing times of 11 or 12 minutes were common. 1 The National Rail Enquiries appears to have coped well with very high volumes We saw no evidence that the NRE website crashed or was slower than usual, despite a large spike in volume (Chris Scoggins reported that the volume on 2 December was twice the previous record peak on 7 January 2010). 2 The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies NRE had to advise passengers not to use the journey planner for enquiries about East Coast, Southeastern and South West Trains. A copy of your revised DPPP is attached to this letter, and will be published on our website along with a copy of this letter. I confirm that we have reviewed your DPPP against the 2009 Guidance “How to write your Disabled People’s Protection Policy: A guide for Train and Station Operators” (the Guidance) and can confirm that your revised DPPP meets the requirements of Condition 5 of your station licence and passenger train licence. We welcome your reduced notice period for assistance bookings which requires passengers to give 6 hours’ notice for assistance booking when travelling on your services. We believe this is likely to be positive for passengers. Since your DPPP was originally submitted to ORR we have had several exchanges in the intervening period in order to bring about the changes required to make it fully compliant with the Guidance. We also sought views on your policies from Transport Focus and the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC).
