From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both.

  • Reeling in the Years: Retrospect and Nostalgia in Youth Movies
Reeling in the years: retrospect and nostalgia in youth movies David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up- modern/. Almost by definition, movies about youth are bound to be retrospective. Of course, young people do make their own films; and while there is a long (and partly hidden) history here, the advent of digital media has significantly extended the opportunities for young film-makers. Yet almost all commercially produced movies about young people – the films that reach cinemas and broadcast television – are produced by adults. As such, they are bound to view the past of youth or childhood from the perspective of the present. Implicitly or explicitly, this kind of retrospection frequently involves a comparison between past and present, which takes one or the other as better, or as preferable. We create narratives about the ideals or the freedom we have lost, or the misery and oppression we have escaped. We tell stories of ‘coming of age’, of the corruption of innocence or the acquisition of knowledge and enlightenment. Retrospect may entail nostalgia – a sense of wistful longing for a lost past – but nostalgia itself may have several dimensions, motivations and consequences, not just personally but also socially and politically. In this essay, I want to engage with this phenomenon through a consideration of six Hollywood films from the past 40 years: perhaps not all of them would be immediately categorised as ‘youth movies’, but in different ways they all raise questions about this process of retrospection and nostalgia for youth.

  • Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, Heart of Darkness, and The
FILMHISTORIA Online Vol. 30, núm. 2 (2020) · ISSN: 2014-668X Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Heart of Darkness, and the Vietnam War Redux ROBERT J. CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract This essay is a consideration of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now—in its original as well as revised form—in light of Francis Ford Coppola’s film career, the Vietnam War, and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Keywords: Francis Ford Coppola, Apocalypse Now, Heart of Darkness, Vietnam War. Considering Coppola Francis Ford Coppola has an artistic problem: he is not a thinker. Indeed, Coppola has always been short on thought; he stumbles when he thinks, when he thinks he’s thinking. The Godfather (1972, 1974, 1990) was strongest in its execution—also its executions—not in its adolescent implications of analogy between the Mafia and corporate capitalism (an analogy that ignores, among other things, the Sicilian origins of the Mafia and its blood bonds of loyalty, which have nothing to do with capitalism). The Conversation (1974) itself faltered in its Orwellian idea-structure. Oddly, the little-known Rain People (1969), a road picture about a young woman’s journey toward self-discovery, may be Coppola’s most fully realized if least spectacular film.

COMUNICATO STAMPA Il Museo Nazionale del Cinema presenta al Cinema Massimo The Godfather Retrospettiva Francis Ford Coppola Da venerdì 2 marzo a domenica 1 aprile 2012 Cinema Massimo - via Verdi, 18, Torino Il Museo Nazionale del Cinema rende omaggio, da venerdì 2 marzo a domenica 1 aprile 2012, a Francis Ford Coppola – regista, sceneggiatore e produttore cinematografico italoamericano – con una retrospettiva dal titolo The Godfather. Retrospettiva Francis Ford Coppola.
