A warm welcome from the Chairman

Welcome to Halstead Town Football Club for the opening game of the 2021/22 season. After so many months with no competitive football it’s great to be playing again. Let’s hope we have seen the last of COVID and we can complete the season. Whilst there has been little football over the last few months, the many volunteers within the club have been busy keeping the ground looking smart, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. A big shout out also to our groundsman, Tim Williamson, for keeping the pitch looking in top condition. The Gaffer has been busy in the transfer market pre-season and we welcome newcomers Joe Thomas, Jordan Blackwell and Dan Jones to the club. We also welcome back Julian Simon-Parson, Jordan Palmer and Adam Hampson. This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and of course the supporters of Newbury Forest. I hope your journey here today was trouble free and straight forward. For your refreshment today, we have a tea bar to the right of the pay kiosk as you come in and a fully stocked bar in the clubhouse which is directly behind the grandstand where card payments are welcomed. Based on previous meetings this promises to be an entertaining game as we are never short on goals when we play each other. Both of the last two games being seven-goal thrillers! Please enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home. Come on the Humbugs Carl Pearse - Chairman Premier Suppliers of Specialist Hydraulic Equipment

Our Opponents History in Brief

Founded in 2003 by good friends John Hassan and Marc Wakley, Newbury Forest started out as a Sunday league side. Made up of a small group of friends who just wanted to play regular organised football together. It soon became apparent though that they all wanted a lot more for the Club. After a few years of getting the infrastructure in place, a Reserve team was added in 2006, followed by a third team in 2007. And so, the expansion began. John's coaching background, having achieved his UEFA A Licence and working at Watford Football Club’s Academy, together with being a Director of the coaching website Inside Soccer, resulted in a very distinct playing philosophy which was instilled within the Club from the start. Players were coached regularly to adopt the playing style still in effect to this day. Newbury Forest teams will always focus on possession and ball retention, developing play from back to front with expansive and creative play that players find a joy to be part of, and that fans enjoy watching. Whilst not always successful, and certainly technically demanding on the players, the individuals who join the club know what the ethos is. They players both enjoy and have the desire to play the game in our own brand of style.

DOING IT WITH THE KIDS Newbury Forest Colts were established in 2007 and the Club began with just 2 teams at U9 and U10 age groups. This has grown considerably over the years with teams being played at every age group. Training sessions take place during the week and every Saturday and the Club is fortunate to have enthusiastic, qualified coaches to deliver these sessions. Some who are current senior players working with our youngsters. It cannot be stressed what a tremendous asset it is to the Club to have senior players coaching the junior players. It creates a clear pathway for the youth teams and individual players to progress into the senior teams in the future. Alongside the expansion of Newbury Forest's youth teams, the seniors were also taking huge strides forwards. Having repeated success in the South Essex Sunday Football League, winning successive promotions and league titles together with league cup wins, the Club felt it was time to make the step up into playing more competitive games in Saturday football. The goal? To have at least one side competing in the National League System [NLS - Step 7 and above]. History Of Newbury Forest continued on next page…..

Our Opponents History - Cont.

GREAT PROGRESS MADE In 2008 the First Team entered the Romford & District League and has not looked back since. The hugely significant appointment of First Team Manager Leo Connolly led the side into winning the league in the first season and gaining entry to the Essex & Suffolk Borders League Division One. Immediate success followed again as the team won promotion to the Premier Division. This achieved the Club’s short-term goal of playing in the NLS. As well as the league success and progress into the NLS, the Club has also won the Essex Saturday Premier Cup twice, in 2012 and 2014. Now for the first time in the Club’s history, it is now competing at Step 6 in the NLS after being accepted into the new Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Division One South for this season. The Club’s style of football has gained a rapid reputation for being crowd pleasing and exciting, and the Club main aim for the First Team is to push as high up the NLS as possible. Alongside Leo, the Club also made another signing of huge significance. Ron Dangerfield, our current Secretary/Chairman has a wealth of experience working in professional football. His knowledge, skills and expertise around successful football club management and administration has given Newbury Forest the strong foundation upon which to continue its growth and continued success. NEWBURY FOREST GIVE BACK AS WELL Over the years Newbury Forest have supported the Downs Syndrome Association in football events, and in July 2011 the Club hosted the inaugural 24-hour football match to raise funds for this great cause. Newbury Forest's GoFor24 challenge gained lots of local media attention and attracted over 700 kids plus more than 500 adults to the weekend of activities. A total of £5000 was raised and is now an annual event held in several countries around the world. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS The future is very bright for Newbury Forest. Senior success, youth team expansion, and annual events make the Club a significant presence in the local community. Quite an achievement for a Club less than twenty years old. An achievement that the Club hopes will continue for a long time. The Match Officials Referee : Paul Sturton

Assistants : Richard Baker & Wayne Dearsley Please Respect the Match Officials at all times Today we welcome Newbury Forest to the Milbank Stadium for the opening game of season 2021/22.

Our first-ever match against this opposition was as recently as the 2018/19 season, when they joined us in the new Thurlow Nunn First Division South.

It was a memorable game. Jordan Pavett scored a hat-trick as the lead changed several times, before a late winner from Callum Vincent secured all three points for us with a 5-4 victory.

There was also plenty of goals in the reverse fixture with the Humbugs winning by the odd goal in seven.

In this game the visitors held a 3-2 lead on 90 minutes but again they were thwarted by Callum who scored two goals in stoppage time to snatch a late 4-3 win.

In the following season, 2019/20, we also won both matches by the odd goal. At the Milbank we came out 2-1 winners and the away game was another high scoring drama with Jamie Baker firing a late winner in a 4-3 victory.

Last season, the tables were turned and it was the Humbugs who conceded a late goal which was enough for Newbury Forest to take all the points with a 4-3 scoreline in their favour.

Over this season will be printing a A series of articles by the author of the book ‘A History and Guide to Football Programmes’ describing how programmes have changed over a century-and-a-half of , interesting reading.

Setting the Scene

Today’s newspapers and magazines may use modern colour print and photographic techniques, but they would still be recognisable to a Victorian transported by time-travel to 1998. Similarly with other periodicals, and certainly with books. It is most unlikely, however, that our time-warped visitor would recognise the printed word as sold to him at a football match.

The matchday programme has undergone dramatic change since it first emerged as a means of identifying players in the 1870’s. Today, it is a glossy, colourful and sophisticated communications and marketing vehicle, sold in prodigious quantities and for sums far removed from the penny or halfpenny of Victorian days.

In the course of this series articles, the development of matchday programmes will be chronicled, and put into the perspective of contemporary life and the game they represent. Avid readers of modern programmes may bemoan the prevalence of advertisements, but these vital fund-raisers become fascinating historical markers as we roll back the years. The local butcher, baker and candle-stick maker were present in just about every club programme, as was the local brewery, theatre (and then cinema), newspapers and menswear shops.

Local industries were prominent amongst the advertisements - razor blades in the Sheffield clubs’ programmes, vehicle and cycle accessory manufacturers in the Birmingham clubs’ issues, ship-builders advertising for workers on Clydeside. We can watch local economies evolve over the life of a club’s matchday programme by reading the adverts.

Trends within the game are, of course, apparent in editorials and features, while great teams, marvellous players, and some unhappy times in the game may be recalled from the playing and managerial personnel listed in the programmes.

If the content of programmes down the years is varied, then so are the formats and styles used by clubs and associations. From the simple teamsheet of Victorian days, listing players and their distinguishing features, to the colourful, glossy booklets of the 1990’s - the history of football programmes is as varied and interesting as the game itself, as we will discover over the course of this season.
