Highlights include Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) in its 50th Anniversary Celebration, featuring works co-commissioned by STG. Founded with the primary goal of providing access to the art form of classical ballet to people Leah Baltus of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, DTH has grown into a globally- Editor-in-Chief acclaimed dance institution that has occupied a distinguished place at the Andy Fife forefront of American artistic achievement for 49 years. Hours after getting the initial call June 26 about a disturbance at a residence on H.A. Varnum Road, deputies caught up with Randall Pitts on Boneyard Road off CR 69, just inside Jackson County. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of his black Pontiac Sunfire, which was parked in the middle of the road. When a deputy, using a loud speaker, urged him to resolve the situation without anyone being hurt, Pitts replied: “Just let me die in peace.” Moments later, Pitts sped off, going eastbound on Boneyard Road. After driving about a mile, he came to a roadblock set up by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Pitts stopped in the middle of the road. Deputies drew their guns and took cover. RANDALL PITTS Pitts ignored deputies as they repeatedly attempted to talk him into peacefully resolving the standoff.

    Alice Walker's The Color Purple RUTH EL SAFFAR, University of Illinois Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is the work that has made a writer who has published consistently good writing over the past decade and a half into some­ thing resembling a national treasure. Earlier works, like her collection of short stories, In Love and Trouble (1973), and her poems, collected under the title Revo­ lutionary Petunias and Other Poems (1973), have won awards.' And there are other novels, short stories, poems, and essays that have attracted critical attention.2 But with The Color Purple, which won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, Alice Walker has made it onto everyone's reading list, bringing into our consciousness with clarity and power the long-submerged voice of a black woman raised southern and poor. Although Celie, the novel's principal narrator/character, speaks initially from a deeply regional and isolated perspective, both she and the novel ultimately achieve a vision which escapes the limitations of time and space. The Color Purple is a novel that explores the process by which one discovers one's essential value, and learns to claim one's own birthright. It is about the magical recovery of truth that a world caught in lies has all but obscured. Shug Avery, the high-living, self-affirming spirit through whom the transfor­ mation of the principal narrator/character takes place reveals the secret at a crucial point: "God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it.

This week in our series, we look back at some of the social issues and cultural changes in America in the nineteen seventies and eighties. (MUSIC) In some ways, the nineteen eighties seemed like the opposite of the nineteen sixties. The sixties were years of protest for social justice and change. Many Americans demonstrated against the Vietnam War. Blacks demonstrated for civil rights. Women demonstrated for equality. Many people welcomed new social programs created by the government. By the nineteen eighties, however, many people seemed more concerned with themselves than with helping society. To them, success was measured mainly by how much money a person made. People wanted to live the good life, and that took money. 2 The changes started to become evident during the nineteen seventies. For a while, these years brought a continuation of the social experiments and struggles of the sixties. But then people began to see signs of what society would be like in the eighties. There were a number of reasons for this change. One reason was the end to America's military involvement in Vietnam after years of war.
