Sophie Milman - Make Someone Happy (2007) Sophie Milman’s debut release reveals a gifted young jazz vocalist who swings with a surprising degree of maturity. Though born in Russia, she has called Canada home for some time and is joined by some of the country’s best jazz musicians. Milman isn’t afraid to take a few chances and seems to be quite comfortable with her own voice rather than copying others, as young performers have a tendency to do. Review by Ken DRYDEN - AMG. Joshua Redman Quartet - Blues for Pat (1994) This European CD, probably a bootleg, shows just how exciting the band was live. On 70 minutes of music recorded in a San Francisco club, Redman often indulges in close interplay and exciting tradeoffs with Metheny; the two clearly inspired each other. The recording quality is decent, and the performances overall actually exceed Wish in passion and creativity. Highlights include “Blues for Pat,” an 181/2-minute version of “St. Thomas” and “Carla’s Groove.” All Joshua Redman and Pat Metheny fans will want this one. - by Scott Yanow, AMG. Tracks: 1. So it is hardly a propitious time to release an album with this title. Perhaps the CD should have been called theJazz Doesn’t Play Nina Simone. Nevertheless, this is a good representative selection from the work of a singing pianist who always seemed to be outside the jazz mainstream. She is not even mentioned in some jazz reference books, perhaps for the snobbish reason that some of her singles got into the pop charts and have even been used in TV commercials (but so have those of Louis Armstrong - the subject of theJazz’s previous release). Certainly Simone was the kind of artist who appeals to people who don’t normally regard themselves as jazz fans. This album includes such popular hits as I Put a Spell on You and My Baby Just Cares For me but unaccountably omits To Love Somebody, which got into the UK Top Five in 1969. However popular she was, and despite her classical training, she was undoubtedly a jazz performer - and a unique one. Her voice was deep and she often used a very wide vibrato, putting songs across with a passion which also found voice in her political activism. But this passion gave a forcefulness to many of her performances: whether an optimistic song like Feeling Good or the sombre Strange Fruit (here performed very histrionically). Her piano style was often thumping - even ponderous - a quality she shared with Dave Brubeck (another classically-influenced pianist). And she took material from whatever sources she pleased - popular songs, show tunes, folk and gospel songs, as well as jazz standards and her own originals.

Claudettes deliver holiday cheer By P.J. GLISSON [email protected] IRONWOOD – Excited patrons of the Historic Iron- wood Theatre packed the house for Saturday night’s annual Claudette Christmas show, during which they were clapping and cheering even before the acts began. Even musical director George Ackerman-Behr, who offered a pre-show warm-up by playing organ tunes such as “Winter Wonderland,” received cries of “We love you!” The Claudettes began the show by applying their jazzy dance skills to pop Christmas tunes, which eventually allowed for Santa Claus to run down one of the theatre SOUTH aisles, shouting “Ho, Ho, Ho!” before joining the ladies WEST onstage. Throughout the evening, the ladies also performed sev- eral other numbers, including a reindeer dance and glitzy routines set to fun holiday tunes, including “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The audience could not have loved them more. Overall, the evening pro- vided an extravaganza of tal- ent, with dancers, singers and musicians of all ages perform- ing anything from Christmas pop to Christian classics. PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.

Working with a merged band that included guitarist Cliff White and drummer Albert "June" Gardner from Cooke's regular touring outfit and saxophonist King Curtis and his band, Cooke brings a gospel fervor to these whirlwind versions, which are fiery, emotionally direct, and hit with uncommon power. Every track burns with an insistent, urgent feel, and although Cooke practically defines melisma on his single releases, here he reaches past that into deeper territory that finds him almost literally shoving and pushing each song forward with shouts, asides, and spoken interactions with the audience, which becomes as much a part of this set as any bandmember.
