Chris Nye’s Journey to the Catholic Church I was raised a Baptist, but always had a fascination with the Catholic Church. There was something amazing about the art, the spirituality, the saints and the history. After I graduated from college, I set off on a path to explore religion more in-depth. I felt drawn to liturgical worship, and attended the Episcopal Church. Yes, it was beautiful and spiritual. But something was missing. I found out what that was on a visit to , Canada. I had just learned my father – and best friend – was diagnosed with terminal cancer. So, I took the opportunity to visit Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré , a beautiful famous for miracles and healing. There I found what was missing in my spiritual life: Jesus. I prayed to God to save my father. In what you might call the “Miracle at St. Anne’s Basilica, “ I looked into the eyes of a statue of Jesus and saw His answer. I knew He was weeping. In a way I can’t explain, I heard Him say, “Your father must join me in Heaven now. I am so very sorry for your pain, but this is my will and what is best for him. Have faith in me and come back to my church.” I later called my mother and learned my father had taken a bad turn. I cut my trip short and arrived home in Columbia, South Carolina, on a Saturday. I spoke to my father and he told me he loved me. He passed away the next day, only five days after my experience at St. Anne’s. That sent a strong message: My faith was important, and I needed a community to worship with. I resolved to receive Confirmation through RCIA, and the process was life changing. I am now at peace and feel very blessed and so happy to be home at St. Peter Chanel!!
