It hardly distinguishes believer from nonbeliever. When faith of the Cross carries us to the brink, brings us to stand up for our convictions, even to suffer for 8:15 †Msg. GOSPEL REFLECTION READINGS FOR THE WEEK August 7, 2016 Patience is a virtue. At least that's what they say. You might think Geoffrey Chaucer Sunday: Wisdom 18:6-9 in "The Canterbury Tales" first used the saying. There he wrote, "Patience is a great Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 virtue of perfection." However, William Langland first used the saying in 1370 in Luke 12:32-48 his poem, "The Vision of Piers." The poem was in Middle English, so the saying reads, "Suffraunce is a soverayn virtue." But you get the picture and you have Monday: 1:2-5, 24-28 something to store away for your next trivia contest. Matthew 17:22-27 Jesus hadn't read Chaucer or Langland when he was talking to his disciples in Luke Tuesday: :8--3:4 12 about the servant who begins to act improperly towards his charges because he Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 believes there has been a delay in the master's return. But Jesus was talking about Wednesday: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10 the values of patience and commitment. He was urging them to stay ready and keep John 12:24-26 working to spread the good news. It is easy for a person to get complacent and let

Thursday: Ezekiel 12:1-12 down one's guard. It is easy for a person to get tired of waiting and then turn to other sources of satisfaction. Matthew 18:21--19:1

Friday: :1-15, 60, 63 The stewardship way of life is just that: a way of life. It is 24/7. We sometimes want Matthew 19:3-12 to reduce it to a series of activities or take a break from giving of ourselves so much. We are not only talking about the second coming of Jesus Christ, but the ways that Saturday: :1-10, 13, 30-32 Jesus comes to us daily in the form of people in need. If we are not vigilant, we run Matthew 19:13-15 the risk of being found asleep or even worse when the Master comes to call. A Next Sunday: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 virtue is a trait or quality that we see as morally good or a necessary component for Hebrews 12:1-4 a moral life. Patience is important because staying the course and carrying the cross Luke 12:49-53 of Jesus is not easy. But Jesus, and Chaucer and Langland, are sure the reward at the end of the road is well worth it. NINTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
