I mean, I know and have seen what I was obscurely looking for. I don´t know what else remains but I have now seen and have got beyond the shadow and the disguise.”5 Actualmente el interés por Thomas Merton es especialmente notable en Norteamérica como los demuestran los numerosos ensayos críticos, biografías, ediciones de fuentes primarias, análisis y estudios que se han publicado durante las últimas

Lorenzo W. Milam's brilliant first novel, Under A Bed of Poses, has received countless rejection slips from some of the finest publishing houses in New York. "Some novelists claim their works are like chil dren," he said recently, in an interview, "and that the act of writing is much like bringing a child into the world. I prefer the concept of Sherwood Ander son. He said that writing is like giving birth to a litter of pigs. If such is the case, considering all the essays, poems, and nov els I have burned, I should have a powerful lot of bacon by now." Milam likes to say that he was born with a silver foot in his mouth. When not writing (two hours a week), he spends most of his time with a small cadre of select friends playing Existential Monopoly and read ing out loud from The Book of Changes. Milam founded KRAB-FM (Seattle), KBOO (Portland). KDNA (St. Louis). and is part owner of KTAO (Los Gatos. California). He is exceedingly droll and a very bad speller. In one play written in this language, the Marquis tricks actor Gabriel de Beaumont into drinking poison so that he can study the latter’s performance of Socrates’s death while actually dying. In another play written in this language the title substance always appears on the person who opens packages of a finger, an ear, and a foot, all belonging to a politician’s kidnapped wife. In addition to Sergi Belbel’s Blood, a play written in this language sees three women recall their teacher, the title actress, whose name refers to another play written in this language, Rodolf Sirera’s The Lamentable Death of Enric Ribera. NIHILISM IN TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY SPANISH DRAMA Tyler R. Oakley A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures in the Graduate School. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Samuel Amago, Supervisor Irene Gómez Castellano Federico Luisetti Jorge Marí Ellen R. Welch © 2014 Tyler R. Oakley ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Tyler R. Oakley: Nihilism in Turn-of-the-Century Spanish Drama (Under the direction of Dr. Samuel Amago) The present study employs the concept of nihilist transvaluation to investigate what has generally been referred to as Modernism and the Avant-Garde, and more specifically the Generations of 98 and 14 in Spanish Peninsular literature. This analysis builds on the works of Gonzalo Sobejano’s Nietzsche en España (1967) and Jesús G. Maestro’s El personaje nihilista (2001), while refocusing the guiding concept in the context of literary drama at the turn-of-the- century in Spain. Nihilism proves to be a transnational phenomenon in the arts with a unique manifestation in Spanish drama that allows us to genealogically reconstruct a period of continuity from Benito Pérez Galdós to Federico García Lorca. This stylistic commonality is explained through a return to the Aristotelian poetics of tragedy, not without temporal, regional, and individual stylistic nuances, which lead to the possibility of a typology of these authors and their theatrical works. iii Thanks to Sam, the committee, my friends, and family. iv Table of Contents Introduction ……………………………………………………………………………………….1 I.

ANTONIO COLINAS: POETRY AND LIFE (1967-1988), A CRITICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE FOUNDATIONAL POETIC WORKS WITH SELECTED TRANSLATIONS Maria C. Fellie A dissertation submitted to the faculty at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Studies (Spanish), College of Arts & Sciences. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Irene Gómez Castellano Samuel Amago Emilio del Valle Escalante N. Grace Aaron Carmela Ferradáns © 2016 Maria C. Fellie ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Maria C. Fellie: Antonio Colinas: Poetry and Life (1967-1988), A Critical Introduction to the Foundational Poetic Works with Selected Translations (Under the direction of Irene Gómez Castellano) Antonio Colinas (La Bañeza, León, Spain, 1946) is a well-known and important contemporary poet in the Spanish-speaking world (Premio Nacional de Literatura, Spain 1982); however, the wide appeal of his verses makes his work a perfect candidate for an introduction and translation into English. The present critical anthology of Colinas’s early and mid-career poetic works deploys the lens of translation theory to frame an image-centered analysis of his poetry. The dissertation argues that the poetic image is the most tangible medium through which poet, translator, and reader connect, through which ideas flow between languages. This study consists of an introduction to the theory and practice of poetic translation, a biographical introduction to Colinas, four chapters of critical overview and analysis of Colinas’s first nine books of poetry (written 1967-1988), and a bilingual anthology of representative translated poems from each of the books discussed.

  • Got to Make It !
Got to Make it ! Collectors’ Edition by Jack Eadon Cover illustration by Scott Freeman, Loveland,CO Eloquence Press Tustin, California Perspective It’s an awfully bleak view of things when you think of it: We either complain when we struggle aimlessly toward an end with no result, or we shrug in disbelief when “what-we-always-hoped-for-with-all-of-our-hearts” comes to us without an effort. Either way, it’s like all our hard work directed toward accomplishing specific goals is totally unrelated to the outcome. Boy, that view of things might seem familiar, but it offers us little hope if what we want is to truly master our lives. Here’s another way to look at it: We don’t just struggle or hope aimlessly, we strive. Common to us all, striving implies an earnest, sometimes unrelenting, persistence in ourstruggle. In fact, as you will see herein, leaning against a cause or purpose is something we homo sapiens are very good at doing. Some might call it our obsessive nature, offhandedly considered a weakness. On the contrary, it is our impatience—so-called realism and can-do attitude—that creates deadlines which in turn prevent us from reaching our goals. If we resist our tendency to constantly set arbitrary benchmarks, on the way to reaching our goals, and instead lean hard and long enough enough, we are capable of exerting enough energy to create any definitive change. This story is a story about the effectiveness of leaning. 5 Jack Eadon Notes on Got to Make It! For the most part the chronology regarding the band is accurate; for sake of readability I have juggled theg timin of several events.
