David Wallace-Wells, The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming Course Description: This course will focus on introductory readings concerning a variety of philosophical topics, including the meaning of life, the role of religion in society, the attempts to justify religious belief, the nature of the conscious mind and its relationship to the physical body, the possibility of artificial intelligence, the value of political equality, and the philosophical implications of recent findings in the sciences, especially physics, biology, and psychology. Kent Core: This course may be used to satisfy a Kent Core requirement. The Kent Core as a whole is intended to broaden intellectual perspectives, foster ethical and humanitarian values, and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers. Diversity: This course may be used to satisfy the University Diversity requirement. Diversity courses provide opportunities for students to learn about such matters as the history, culture, values and notable achievements of people other than those of their own national origin, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, physical and mental ability, and social class. Diversity courses also provide opportunities to examine problems and issues that may arise from differences, and opportunities to learn how to deal constructively with them. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION Reading Readings will be assigned for every class session. I have selected the readings with an eye toward keeping them manageable. You will be expected to complete all of the readings assigned for a given class session before that session; please prepare accordingly. Note that reading philosophical texts is not like reading plot-driven novels or short stories. With argumentative writing, it often happens that you need to read something more than once to grasp its meaning. If you’ve finished a reading, and you don’t feel like you’ve understood the main points well enough to pass a quiz, you should re-read the material and make an outline/summary. If after multiple readings you still feel like you don’t understand the main points, please contact me with detailed questions that reference specific parts of the text. It’s a good idea to provide evidence of having made a serious effort to understand the material independently. 1 Two “macro” papers (Midterm: 10% of the final grade; Final: 15%; Total: 25%) This course is intended, in part, to improve your writing skills and to enhance your use of writing as a tool for critical thinking and reflection. In keeping with these goals, I will ask you to write two philosophical essays. The minimum length of each essay is 1500 words [~4 pages] and the maximum length is 2000 words [~6 pages]. That’s relatively short, by the standards of the profession, but these assignments will require a great deal of care and effort on your part. I will provide detailed instructions for each paper approximately two weeks before that paper is due. In addition, we will take some class time to go over the basics of writing a philosophical essay, with a focus on constructing an effective thesis statement and organizing your ideas into a cogent argument. In class, I will go over the guidelines for writing and assessing philosophical papers, but, in general, philosophical writing should be clear, focused, persuasive, and attentive to detail. It should avoid using jargon and ‘-isms’ wherever possible, and should strive to express complex ideas in commonsense terms, with an eye for academic standards of diction. The biggest factor in determining the grade on a philosophical paper is the strength of the overall argument, and the author’s ability to anticipate and forestall challenges to his or her claims and inferences. Also important is the author’s care with factual claims, as well as his or her comprehension of the course material. The grade is never based on the thesis that the author has chosen to put forward. The goal of this course is to teach students to reason well about difficult abstract issues. Success in the course consists in learning to argue well for your conclusions, whatever they happen to be. Your understanding of the expectations will evolve throughout the semester. In accordance with this, the midterm paper will count for less in your final grade than the final. (Midterm: 10% Final: 15%) This way, if you make mistakes on the first paper, they won’t do as much damage to your grade, and you can avoid making the same mistakes in the second paper. Late papers will be accepted, for a reduced grade. Twelve “micro” assignments (5% each, for a total of 60% of the final grade) There will be 12 “micro” assignments throughout the semester, each 500 words minimum. I will provide instructions for how to complete each assignment in class and by email. Class Participation (15% of the final grade) Class participation consists in contributing to class discussion by asking questions or making comments that demonstrate a grasp of the course material and an interest in the topics. Although attendance is required, it does not count as class participation. I think of participation as a kind of intellectual investment in the course, which goes beyond simply completing the reading and writing assignments. Some students will initially find it difficult to speak up in front of a crowd. Nevertheless, public speaking is an essential aspect of the course, and also a requirement; no student can receive an A in the course without engaging actively in class discussion. Limited class participation credit can also be earned by engaging with me by email or at office hours. To make the class participation grade as objective as possible, you will be asked to write down some keywords from your contribution to the class discussion at the end of each class session. Please make sure to do that. 2 Grading Here is a summary of how your final grade will be calculated: • Twelve “micro” assignments: 60% • Midterm paper: 10% • Final paper: 15% • Class participation: 15% The following provides a translation from the numerical score to a letter grade: A 96-100 B+ 86-90 C+ 71-75 D 56-60 A- 91-95 B 81-85 C 66-70 F 55 or below B- 76-80 C- 61-65 There is no “curve” for the course. This means that you are not in competition with your classmates for high grades. It is conceivable—though exceedingly unlikely—that everyone in the course will receive an A. Or a D. When you receive your final grade for the course, please note that it is non-negotiable. I will not change grades under any circumstances, unless I have made a demonstrable clerical error in my calculations. Attendance Attendance is mandatory; a sign-in sheet will be passed around at the beginning of each class session. Excessive absences or lateness (more than 2 in a semester) will negatively impact your final grade in the course. Missing four or more class sessions is grounds for failing the course. Students who are absent from class for religious reasons or due to documented medical treatment will not incur any penalty on their final grade, but are responsible for all required reading and writing assignments. Office Hours and Availability As noted above, my primary office hours are on Wednesdays, 1-6pm. However, many other options are available. If you want to meet with me at some other time, let me know and we can try to arrange it. If you prefer to meet somewhere on campus other than my office, let me know and we’ll see what we can work out. (It won’t always be possible, of course.) In general, I’m quite flexible; my only hard and fast rule is that I cannot meet with you on the weekends. Needless to say, I can be reached by email at any time. I will do my best to respond to your emails as quickly as possible. Sometimes I will reply to your message immediately, even at odd hours, like 4am. However, please do not assume that this is always possible; there is great variability. Occasionally, I will not have access to email or will not be able to answer your query for up to several days. In such cases, please be patient. There are many other means of contacting me, including Skype, GoogleChat, iChat, and the like. I am open to all of these options, if you prefer to use them. 3 Plagiarism, Cheating, and other forms of Academic Dishonesty Please note that I do not tolerate academic dishonesty in any form. I take a strict stance on this. Be aware that I will dole out maximum penalties for violations, including assigning failing grades and pushing for suspension and/or expulsion from Kent State. If you are unclear on what constitutes plagiarism or academic dishonesty, please make it your business to learn about this immediately.

He rejects dualism with respect to both God- Nature and mind-body, yet his principles mark off the mental as severely as is possible without forfeiting monism, showing his awareness that monism (attribute identity) threatens mental irreducibility. The constraints Spinoza imposes in order to preserve mental irreducibility and to make human beings partial expressions of one thinking and extended substance produce a tension between mental autonomy and mind-body identity. However, I propose that while this remains a serious philosophical problem, some degree of tension must persist in any non-reductive monism which succeeds in giving the mental a weighting equal to the physical, and that Spinoza's sensitivity to this requirement is instructive. I argue, on the other hand, that Spinoza's theory of mind is irrevocably damaged by his turning of the traditional Mind of God into the Mind of the Whole of Nature in so far as he extrapolates from this Mind of God-or-Nature to finite minds. In characterising finite minds as partial expressions of "God's" infinite intellect I believe Spinoza becomes caught between his unorthodox conception of God's Mind as all-inclusive and a retained conception of the Mind of God as all truths.

Why had he climbed this hill? Such memory lapses happened to him all the time when going from the living room to the kitchen, but this was the first time one had happened at the top of a big hill. It was a big hill. He was out of breath. Perhaps, he reflected, this was not the first time it had happened. After all, his memory was evidently less than reliable. Somehow nature has managed to pull the rabbit of experience out of a hat made of mere matter. Theories of Consciousness explores a number of ways to understand consciousness and its place in the physical world. Spectacularly diverse, the spectrum of theories ranges from those that identify consciousness with particular brain processes to those that seemingly deny that consciousness even exists. The attempt to understand consciousness is only as old as the scientific revolution. As William Seager shows, Descartes can be seen as the pioneer of this project and some aspects of his position still set the stage and the agenda for modern work. His views vividly illustrate the problem of explaining the physical ‘generation’ of consciousness and point to the fundamental importance of – or perhaps reveal the basic error in – an appeal to the notion of mental representation. After addressing Descartes, Seager considers theories that identify certain particular elements of conscious experience (the so-called qualia) with ‘vector codes’ within abstract spaces defined by neural networks. From there, Seager proceeds to HOT theory, which regards consciousness as the product of higher order thoughts about mental states. The influential and provocative views of Daniel Dennett are closely examined. Theories of Consciousness devotes a lot of attention to the new representational theory of consciousness and the special problems created by the phenomena of conscious thought, which lead to the conclusions that representation is indeed essential to consciousness but that an internalist account of representation is required.
