Avec le Festival Disney, qui s'est tenu fin avril, A la saison des festivals est ouverte. Le prochain se déroulera à Cambrai dans le Nord avec les American Journeys fin Mai avec plein de monde R à l'affiche (voir leur site). Grâce à une initiative de la part de M C Maillet N un tremplin destiné aux jeunes artistes a été organisé lors de ce festival E Disney, une dizaine de formations françaises ont pu se faire connaître aux yeux du public européen. Je peux vous assurer que la qualité est V là!!! Félicitations aux organisateurs. Vous découvrirez ces formations dans les prochains CWB dans la rubrique Country En France. Cette formation irlandaise est largement encensée par la critique bluegrass spécialisée, je l'ai découverte grâce à Rienk Janssen et son ' Strictly Country Magazine' ( Hollande) Niall a grandi à Dublin Kentucky' de Bill Monroe…version Presley! Lorsqu'il découvre 'master Bill', sa vie en est bouleversée. Il va rapidement vouer un culte égal à la Carter Family, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers…durant les années '60, il vit à Cork et fonde le Lee Valley String Band qui fêtait-il y a guère ses 30 années d'existence. Par la suite, il jouera dans diverses autres formations et fera même de la radio (sur 'Eireann') rencontrant au passage des artistes US en tournée qu'il va accompagner à l'occasion comme Bill Monroe bien sûr! Il aura aussi notamment un titre d'inspiration Gospel, 'Fallen Angel' enregistré par Johnny Logan à Nashville, fera équipe avec Keith Sewell, premier guitariste de Ricky Skaggs produisant avec ce dernier "Mood Swing'' du Texas Swing authentique, un titre enregistré aussi par Bill Wyman chez Chrysalis' (album Grovin') avec Albert Lee. Après un premier album il y a deux ans avec sa nouvelle formation ''There's a better way'' – également enregistré aux USA par le Nashville Bluegrass Band'', d'autres formations de l'oncle Sam se sont emparée des œuvres de Naill. Il a également été nommé en Irlande pour la CMA Global Artists Awards. Ses deux acolytes sont: a) Clem O'Brien, organisateur du festival Bluegrass Annuel d'Athy, le meilleur chanteur de bluegrass de toute l'Irlande, révélé en 1991 justement à Athy. Il a joué lui aussi avec nombre de formation comme ses Flint Hill Boys originels. Et des artistes américains de passage ainsi qu'aux USA aux cotés de Special Consensus. Il tient également la mandoline, outre la guitare solo et rythmique. Passant occasionnellement au dobro et à la contrebasse. b) Dick Gladney, bassiste régulier a découvert le bluegrass à 10 ans avec un album de Flatt et Scruggs. Ayant monté les Flint Hill Boys avec Martin Cooney, il a co-organisé le festival d'Athy et l'Irish Bluegrass Music Club pour lequel il imprime une newsletter. Membre de la 'BG Music Association' internationale, il a participé aux festivals de Lexington et de Renfro Valley ( Kentucky)aux USA. Et Dick et Clem ont tourné et enregistré ensemble en Amérique avec Roberta et Garry Gordon. Aujourd'hui, le TNB joue à la fois de l'old time, des thèmes de country modern, des airs de violon, de blues, de vieux jazz mélangés à leurs propres compositions, la musique de Bill Monroe demeurant le dénominateur commun. Ce qu'ils avaient déjà prouvé sur l'album précédent avec ''Bill Monroe mandoline'' et 'The laster Resting place' ( le résultat d'une visite commune de Clem et Dick à Rosine, Kentucky). (http://www.nialltonerband.ie/) par Jean Charles SMAINE Promotion Niall Toner Band en France The French Country Music Magazine PORTRAIT Rick Trevino par Marie France SIMON Rick Trevino était sur la scène du 3e Country Western Festival de Disney Village, le 23 avril derniezr. En septembre 2003 sortait son dernier album en date "In My Dreams", produit par Raul Malo (The Mavericks). Le titre "Overnight Success" est bien connu des danseurs en ligne! Avant cela, les danseurs avaient pu user leurs boots sur "Bobby Ann Mason" pour Charleston Bump, "City Lights" pour Feel the Beat ou encore le magnifique cha cha "Un Momento Alla" pour ne citer que quelques titres. Son tout premier album "Dos Mundos" (1993) est enregistré en espagnol. Sony, qui connaît la musique et le business, tire parti de ses origines métissées et produit ses deux premiers albums. Une version de "Just Enough Rope" sortira en simple en anglais, en espagnol et dans les deux langues à la fois. C'est la toute première fois qu'un titre country paraît dans deux langues. La version anglaise atteindra la place 44 au Billboard. En 1994 sort l'album "Rick Trevino", qui reprend presque tous les titres du précédent, mais en anglais, ajoutant quelques nouveaux titres. Trois des titres de l'album rentreront dans les classements : "Honky Tonk Crowd", "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry" et "Doctor Time". L'album suivant "Looking for the Ligt" (1995) sera lui aussi couronné de succès, même si un seul titre "Bobby Ann Mason" rentrera dans le Top 40. Depuis fin 93, Rich est sous contrat avec Columbia Records, à Nashville. Pour son Cd suivant, "Learning as you Go", Rick va se concentrer sur le courant musical en vogue, laissant de côté son héritage hispanique. Il obtiendra sa seule place de n° 1 au Billboard avec "Running Out Of Reasons to Run", mais perdra aussi son contrat, les deux singles suivants n'atteignant pas le top 40. A cette époque, Rick "redécouvre" ses racines hispaniques et rejoint le groupe "Los Super Seven" (David Hidalgo, Freddy Fender, Joe Ely, Leonardo "Flaco" Jiminez, Rick Trevino, Ruben Ramos + de prestigieux "invités" comme Raul Malo, Delbert McClinton ou encore Marty Stuart). Ce qui a peut-être contribué à la rupture du contrat, le label voulant conserver le courant country sans influence latino. L'album "Los Super Seven" remportera un Grammy (1999) dans la catégorie Mexican/Americana. Le 3e album du groupe, avec toujours la participation de Rick Trevino "Heard It On The X", est sorti le 22 mars dernier. La rupture du contrat a eu de nombreuses conséquences sur la vie professionnelle et personnelle de Rich Trevino : il venait de se marier, avait un petit garçon et une maison à payer. Pas d'album veut dire pas de singles, pas de titres joués sur les radios. Cela veut dire pas ou peu de publicité et donc, des tournées qui marchent moins bien. En peu de temps, il est passé de 180 concerts par an à 15, a troqué son autobus de tournée contre un minivan. Il a même dû mettre sa maison en vente. Les choses se sont améliorées depuis, la maison est restée la sienne et il habite toujours Austin avec sa famille. Rick Trevino est né le 16 mai 1971, à Austin, au Texas. Son père est musicien et joue dans un groupe local de musique Tejano (Texan avec un héritage Mexicain, pour faire simple!). Dès 5 ans, Rick étudie le piano. Son enfance est bercée par la musique et ses influences vont de la country "classique" de Merle Haggart à Garth Brooks ou George Strait. Il écoute aussi des pianistes classiques et la musique d'Elton John, par exemple. Il étudie également la clarinette. Il joue maintenant de la guitare rythmique et de l'orgue.

    Martha Gonzalez was born and raised in East Los Angeles and is a Chicana artivista (artist/activist), feminist music theorist and academic. Gonzalez earned a PhD in Feminism from the University of Washington Seattle. In addition, Gonzalez holds an undergraduate degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Her academic interest in music has been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer and percussionist for East L.A’s Quetzal for the last 17 years. Quetzal has made considerable impact in the Los Angeles Chicano music scene. The unique blend of East Los Angeles sounds as well as the social justice content in the work has sparked dialogue and theoretical work among various artist communities, culture theorists, and scholars across the country, Mexico and Japan. The relevance of Quetzal’s work has been noted in a range of publications from dissertations to scholarly books, most recently Patricia Zavella’s I’m Neither Here Nor There: Mexicans’ Quotidian Struggles with Migration and Poverty (Duke University Press, 2011). As a result, the U.S. Library of Congress and Kennedy Centerextended an invitation to perform and speak in September of 2011 as a part of their “Homegrown” music series. The traveling exhibit “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music” sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, featured Quetzal as leaders and innovators of Chicano music. This feat coupled with their Grammy Award winning album on the Smithsonian Folkways label “Imaginaries” marks the importance of her past and ongoing work. As a musician, Gonzalez has collaborated, and/or toured with artist such as Los Lobos, Los Van Van, Jackson Brown, Susana Baca, Perla Batalla, Jaguares, Ozomatli, Jonathan Richman, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, iCubanismo!, Taj Mahal, Tom Waits, Los Super Seven, Lila Downs, Raul Malo, Rick Treviño, Son De Madera, Relicario, Chuchumbe Charanga Cakewalk, The B-side Players, Teatro Campesino, Aloe Blacc, Maya Jupiter, and Laura Rebolloso.

The Annual Tardeada is now in its 13th year of presenting Conjunto music to City residents and downtown tourists looking for an authentic dose of this South Texas musical tradition. “Keeping Conjunto music alive is the mission of the Taller and we are fortunate to have fostered the great talent that we are presenting today,” said Rodolfo Lopez, co-founder and artistic director of the Taller. “Students as young as 7 to seniors reaching 80 have taken part in our classes. It is a celebration of San Antonio’s rich culture for all to enjoy.” This year, the Taller is highlighting the talents of its current and former students as well as its renown instructors. The evening kicks off with current students showcasing what they’ve learned over the course of their time at the Taller. Under the instruction of accordionist, Lorenzo Martinez, students will perform in the traditional Conjunto style with only a bajo sexto accompaniment. Mr. Martinez will perform along with students and as a solo act. Following performances by our current students is well-respected veteran of the Conjunto scene, Jesse Borrego.
