    COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

    Martha Gonzalez Was Born and Raised in East Los Angeles and Is a Chicana Artivista (Artist/Activist), Feminist Music Theorist and Academic

    Martha Gonzalez was born and raised in East Los Angeles and is a Chicana artivista (artist/activist), feminist music theorist and academic. Gonzalez earned a PhD in Feminism from the University of Washington Seattle. In addition, Gonzalez holds an undergraduate degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Her academic interest in music has been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer and percussionist for East L.A’s Quetzal for the last 17 years. Quetzal has made considerable impact in the Los Angeles Chicano music scene. The unique blend of East Los Angeles sounds as well as the social justice content in the work has sparked dialogue and theoretical work among various artist communities, culture theorists, and scholars across the country, Mexico and Japan. The relevance of Quetzal’s work has been noted in a range of publications from dissertations to scholarly books, most recently Patricia Zavella’s I’m Neither Here Nor There: Mexicans’ Quotidian Struggles with Migration and Poverty (Duke University Press, 2011). As a result, the U.S. Library of Congress and Kennedy Centerextended an invitation to perform and speak in September of 2011 as a part of their “Homegrown” music series. The traveling exhibit “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music” sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, featured Quetzal as leaders and innovators of Chicano music. This feat coupled with their Grammy Award winning album on the Smithsonian Folkways label “Imaginaries” marks the importance of her past and ongoing work. As a musician, Gonzalez has collaborated, and/or toured with artist such as Los Lobos, Los Van Van, Jackson Brown, Susana Baca, Perla Batalla, Jaguares, Ozomatli, Jonathan Richman, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, iCubanismo!, Taj Mahal, Tom Waits, Los Super Seven, Lila Downs, Raul Malo, Rick Treviño, Son De Madera, Relicario, Chuchumbe Charanga Cakewalk, The B-side Players, Teatro Campesino, Aloe Blacc, Maya Jupiter, and Laura Rebolloso.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Conjunto Heritage Taller Celebrates San Antonio’s Home Grown Talent with 13th Annual Tardeada Saturday, October 15, 2016, 6:00-11:00pm La Villita, Maverick Plaza, downtown San Antonio Honoring Conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez Premiere of CHT All-Stars San Antonio, TX (September 6, 2016)— The non-profit music organization, Conjunto Heritage Taller (Taller), celebrates San Antonio’s home-grown Conjunto talent on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at La Villita in downtown San Antonio. The Annual Tardeada is now in its 13th year of presenting Conjunto music to City residents and downtown tourists looking for an authentic dose of this South Texas musical tradition. “Keeping Conjunto music alive is the mission of the Taller and we are fortunate to have fostered the great talent that we are presenting today,” said Rodolfo Lopez, co-founder and artistic director of the Taller. “Students as young as 7 to seniors reaching 80 have taken part in our classes. It is a celebration of San Antonio’s rich culture for all to enjoy.” This year, the Taller is highlighting the talents of its current and former students as well as its renown instructors. The evening kicks off with current students showcasing what they’ve learned over the course of their time at the Taller. Under the instruction of accordionist, Lorenzo Martinez, students will perform in the traditional Conjunto style with only a bajo sexto accompaniment. Mr. Martinez will perform along with students and as a solo act. Following performances by our current students is well-respected veteran of the Conjunto scene, Jesse Borrego.

The Local Radio Station Ownership Rule in its current form, including current numerical maximums on the number of AM/FM radio stations that one owner can own in a single market, and also including the current AM/FM subcaps, remain necessary in order to promote diversity, competition, and localism in AM/FM radio in local communities served. Importantly, the Commission should not expand its current definition of the relevant product market beyond broadcast radio stations for purposes of analyzing the Local Radio Station Ownership Rule. The Commission must not abdicate its legal obligation to promote the public interest in diversity, localism, and competition in radio broadcasting at local market levels by applying a purely competitive analysis of how the AM/FM radio industry is perceived to compete with other audio and Internet platforms for global advertising revenue.
