  • Trichoderma Biological Control to Protect Sensitive Maize Hybrids Against Late Wilt Disease in the Field
Journal of Fungi Article Trichoderma Biological Control to Protect Sensitive Maize Hybrids against Late Wilt Disease in the Field Ofir Degani 1,2,* and Shlomit Dor 1,2 1 Plant Sciences Department, Migal—Galilee Research Institute, Tarshish 2, Kiryat Shmona 11016, Israel; [email protected] 2 Faculty of Sciences, Tel-Hai College, Upper Galilee, Tel-Hai 12210, Israel * Correspondence: d-ofi[email protected]; Tel.: +972-54-678-0114 Abstract: Late wilt, a disease severely affecting maize fields throughout Israel, is characterized by the relatively rapid wilting of maize plants from the tasseling stage to maturity. The disease is caused by the fungus Magnaporthiopsis maydis, a soil and seed-borne pathogen. The pathogen is controlled traditionally through the use of maize cultivars having reduced sensitivity to the disease. Nevertheless, such cultivars may lose their immunity after several years of intensive growth due to the presence of high virulent isolates of M. maydis. Alternative effective and economical chemical treatment to the disease was recently established but is dependent on the use of a dripline assigned for two adjacent rows and exposes the risk of fungicide resistance. In the current work, eight marine and soil isolates of Trichoderma spp., known for high mycoparasitic potential, were tested as biocontrol agents against M. maydis. An in vitro confront plate assay revealed strong antagonistic activity against the pathogen of two T. longibrachiatum isolates and of T. asperelloides. These species produce soluble metabolites that can inhibit or kill the maize pathogen in submerged and solid media culture growth assays. In greenhouse experiments accompanied by real-time PCR tracking of the pathogen, the Citation: Degani, O.; Dor, S.

  • Made in Israel: Agricultural Exports from Occupied Territories
Agricultural Made in Exports from Israel Occupied Territories April 2014 Agricultural Made in Exports from Israel Occupied Territories April 2014 The Coalition of Women for Peace was established by bringing together ten feminist peace organizations and non-affiliated activist women in Israel. Founded soon after the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000, CWP today is a leading voice against the occupation, committed to feminist principles of organization and Jewish-Palestinian partnership, in a relentless struggle for a just society. CWP continuously voices a critical position against militarism and advocates for radical social and political change. Its work includes direct action and public campaigning in Israel and internationally, a pioneering investigative project exposing the occupation industry, outreach to Israeli audiences and political empowerment of women across communities and capacity-building and support for grassroots activists and initiatives for peace and justice. www.coalitionofwomen.org | [email protected] Who Profits from the Occupation is a research center dedicated to exposing the commercial involvement of Israeli and international companies in the continued Israeli control over Palestinian and Syrian land. Currently, we focus on three main areas of corporate involvement in the occupation: the settlement industry, economic exploitation and control over population. Who Profits operates an online database which includes information concerning companies that are commercially complicit in the occupation. Moreover, the center publishes in-depth reports and flash reports about industries, projects and specific companies. Who Profits also serves as an information center for queries regarding corporate involvement in the occupation – from individuals and civil society organizations working to end the Israeli occupation and to promote international law, corporate social responsibility, social justice and labor rights.

The soil fungus, Magnaporthiopsis maydis, severely affects sensitive maize hybrids by causing the rapid wilting of plants at the maturity stage. Similarly, the soil fungus, Macrophomina phaseolina, develops in a variety of host plants, which leads to rot and plant mortality. The presence of both pathogens together in diseased cotton plants in Israel suggests possible interactions between them. Here, these relationships were tested in a series of experiments accompanied by real-time PCR tracking in maize and cotton. Despite the fact that neither of the pathogens was superior in a growth plate confrontation assay, their co-inoculum had a significant influence under field conditions. In maize sprouts and fully matured plants, infection by both pathogens (compared to inoculation with each of them alone) led to lesser amounts of M.

Chapter one Making the Desert Bloom: New Jew, Ancient Orient and the Construction of the Sabra 18 1 Chapter O 19 1.1 From Basel to Tel Hai…from Hashomer to the Establishment of the IDF I must train the youth to be soldiers. But only a professional army. Strength: one tenth of the male population: less would not suffice internally. However, I educate one and all to be free and strong men, ready to serve as volunteers if necessary. Education by means of patriotic songs, the Maccabean tradition, religion, heroic stage-plays, honor (Theodor Herzl, 1956). From Basel to Tel Hai... “The nation’s self representation always involves myth about the nation’s creation and about its members” (Mayer, 2000, p.9). According to Mayer, in Zionism, too, as in other nationalisms, myth and memory have been crucial to the construction of the nation. Referring to a hill near .( ציון) The term ‘Zionism’ itself is derived from the biblical word Tzion Jerusalem, this term is symbolic of Eretz Israel , the Land of Israel. The term refers to the ancient patrimony of the Jews which, according to Jewish mythology, was promised by Yahweh to Abraham and his descendents, the ‘Children of Israel”. The first use of the term “Zionism” is attributed to the Austrian Nathan Bimrnbaum, founder of a nationalist Jewish students’ movement called Kadimah . Bimrnbaum first used the term in his journal Selbstemanzipation (Self Emancipation ), published between 1885 and 1894, with some interruptions, and renamed Juedische Volkszeitung in 1894. Zionism does not have a uniform ideology, but has evolved through a dialogue among a plethora of ideologies.
