Rivera !3 SUMMARY A Culture in Flames: Puerto Rican Art of Resistance in the XXI Century, is an investigation with its origins during past centuries, analysing the circumstances of the geo- politics in the Island of Puerto Rico, stemming from two empires, Spain in the XV Century and the United States in the XIX Century. This historic journey, portrays a Puerto Rican ideological substrate, one that establishes the basis of a multi sectorial experience of political, military and social subjugation. This investigation also scrutinises and reflects upon a series of theories, philosophical thoughts and social control mechanisms, all of which illustrate, from a current day perspective, the existing problems with colonialism and patriarchy. This thesis contributes new knowledge, mainly with the reviewing and in depth analysis of the production of a select group of contemporary artists in Puerto Rico, whom through their creative artworks, between the years of 2000-2018, channel answers and solutions of vanguard, against the existential discomfort of the collective psyche of their Country. Art, as an affirmation of identity, as well as a gesture of open resistance, makes an unequivocal front against said systems of power, all of which are reflected throughout their history, art and culture, from pre Colombian up to the contemporary times of the XXI Century.

  • February 14, 2018 the Honorable Ricardo Rosselló Governor La
February 14, 2018 The Honorable Ricardo Rosselló Governor La Fortaleza P.O. Box 9020082 San Juan, PR 00902-0082 Dear Governor Rosselló, I write as president of the American Statistical Association to respectfully urge you to keep Puerto Rico’s statistical agency, El Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics, PRIS), and its board of directors fully independent. I also draw your attention to the 2,800 individuals—and still growing—who have signed a petition with this same request.1 At this critical historical juncture, Puerto Rico needs accurate, objective, and timely statistics. Government statistics empower the economy, serve the health and welfare of citizens, improve governance, and inform decisions and policies in the public and private sectors, among many other vital functions. Government statistics are also fundamental to evidence-based policymaking, the engagement of which is on a rapid rise in local, state, and federal governments. To address the challenges posed by its decade-long economic recession and the devastation of back-to-back hurricanes, Puerto Rico must chart its path toward sustainable recovery using reputable and reliable data and statistical methods. Because of their broad and profound importance, it is imperative that government statistics be produced through rigorous scientific processes and analyses performed by experts that can function without improper outside influence. Government statistics must be independent, objective, accurate, and timely and be perceived as such. It is just as important to have adequate statistics on a variety of topics. PRIS has demonstrated repeatedly it has the expertise to function independently to produce rigorous, objective, and accurate statistics for the benefit of Puerto Rico and its people.

  • The Politics of Charter School Growth and Sustainability in Harlem
REGIMES, REFORM, AND RACE: THE POLITICS OF CHARTER SCHOOL GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY IN HARLEM by Basil A. Smikle Jr. Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Basil A. Smikle Jr. All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT REGIMES, REFORM, AND RACE: THE POLITICS OF CHARTER SCHOOL GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY IN HARLEM By Basil A. Smikle Jr. The complex and thorny relationship betWeen school-district leaders, sub-city political and community figures and teachers’ unions on the subject of charter schools- an interaction fraught with racially charged language and tactics steeped in civil rights-era mobilization - elicits skepticism about the motives of education reformers and their vieW of minority populations. In this study I unpack the local politics around tacit and overt racial appeals in support of NeW York City charter schools with particular attention to Harlem, NeW York and periods when the sustainability of these schools, and long-term education reforms, were endangered by changes in the political and legislative landscape. This dissertation ansWers tWo key questions: How did the Bloomberg-era governing coalition and charter advocates in NeW York City use their political influence and resources to expand and sustain charter schools as a sector; and how does a community with strong historic and cultural narratives around race, education and political activism, respond to attempts to enshrine externally organized school reforms? To ansWer these questions, I employ a case study analysis and rely on Regime Theory to tell the story of the Mayoral administration of Michael Bloomberg and the cadre of charter leaders, philanthropies and wealthy donors whose collective activity created a climate for growth of the sector.

The association centered on the status of Puerto Rico as a colonial possession of the United States. The nationalists argued that Puerto Rico the island’s definition as a U.S. possession violated their sovereignty and called for aggressive resistance against the United States after attempting to initiate change through the electoral process in 1930. Campos developed his brand of nationalism through collaborations with independence activists from India and Ireland while a student at Harvard. Despite the Puerto Rican nationalists’ rhetorically aggressive stance against U.S. imperialism, conversation occurred with groups of Americans who disapproved of their country’s imperial objective.

LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY IN THE CERRO MARAVILLA HEARINGS Germán Negrón Rivera, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2010 Identity has become a major interest for researchers in the areas of linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics. Recent understandings of identity emphasize its malleability and fluidity. This conceptualization of identities as malleable comes from the realization that speakers relate strategically to propositions and their interlocutors in order to achieve their communicative goals. This study is an exploration of the (co-)construction of identities in an institutional context, specifically in the Cerro Maravilla hearings.
