MISIÓN O PROPÓSITO DE LA INSTITUCIÓN: El CIH constituye un repositorio documental y biblográfico que rebasa los límites de una visión histórica localista. Como pieza vital del Programa Graduado de Historia, el CIH ha ido acrecentado el acervo de fuentes primarias y secundarias que sirvan al propósito de fomentar la producción de tesis y publicaciones, encaminadas al estudio comparativo de otras áreas del escenario caribeño. Además de cumplir con funciones archivísticas, el CIH genera sus propios proyectos de investigación, auspicia foros, conferencias, seminarios, coloquios y talleres, y se ocupa de difundir las investigaciones realizadas por estudiosos de la historia de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, mediante la publicación de libros y artículos. A partir de entonces ha sido un instrumento de vital importancia en el crecimiento del Departamento de Historia, particularmente en lo que se refiere a la creación y desarrollo del Programa Graduado, y, por ende, en el de los estudios históricos en Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Es una unidad dinámica que presta continuamente servicio a los profesores y estudiantes de la comunidad universitaria y al público en general en las áreas de la docencia y la investigación. Programa de adquisición de fuentes documentales Desde su fundación, el Centro ha hecho acopio de un valioso acervo documental mediante un programa de microfilmación en archivos del exterior, como son los de Estados Unidos, España, México, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Cuba, Dinamarca, Suecia, y una búsqueda activa de donaciones privadas. El valor de dicho acervo es incalculable para el conocimiento de diferentes aspectos de la historia de Puerto Rico desde los siglos XVI al XX. Además es un complemento indispensable para la documentación que custodia el Archivo General de Puerto Rico, cuyas colecciones datan de finales del siglo XVIII. Se han microfilmado series completas sobre diversos temas, lo que ha permitido que los investigadores y estudiantes tengan un caudal de información para la redacción de libros, tesis y monografías sin que tengan que trasladarse al extranjero y en caso de que así fuera necesario se reducen el tiempo y los costos de una prolongada estadía en el exterior. Hoy día, el archivo del Centro cuenta con 4,316 carretes de micropelículas aproximadamente. Para una relación más precisa de estos fondos incluimos la Guía Descriptiva de los Fondos Documentales Existentes en el Centro de Investigaciones Históricas. A los fondos provenientes del exterior se suma el de las colecciones particulares, que por gestión del Centro o por iniciativa de individuos, de una familia o corporación, han sido donadas a la unidad. Al presente, hay 39 disponibles total o parcialmente. Entre ellas, destacan las siguientes: Gilberto Concepción de Gracia, Sol Luis Descartes, Ruby Black, Luis Negrón López y Ángel Mergal. Como complemento a los fondos documentales descritos, se encuentra una biblioteca especializada en libros y revistas sobre historia de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, y que también contiene las tesis defendidas en el Programa Graduado de Historia. Proyectos de investigación y publicación Una de las funciones principales del Centro es iniciar y promover proyectos de investigación. Estos incorporan a estudiantes de la Programa Graduado de Historia y les sirve de taller para su formación en la disciplina histórica. La mayoría de estos proyectos resultan en publicaciones que han enriquecido notablemente la historiografía puertorriqueña. Desde 1985, el Centro publica anualmente la revista Op. Cit. cuyo objetivo es estimular el interés y la curiosidad por la investigación histórica mediante la difusión de artículos sobre fuentes y recursos documentales disponibles en el Centro y en otros archivos del país y del exterior. Incluye, 5 además, ensayos sobre historiografía y metodología históricas, así como adelantos de investigaciones recientes. A la revista se sumó la Serie Bibliográfica Op. Cit., de la cual se han publicado tres números dedicados a la divulgación de fuentes bibliográficas del Caribe. Talleres y tertulias Es práctica del Centro ofrecer talleres a profesores y estudiantes sobre diversos aspectos de la disciplina histórica. Entre los varios talleres que se han ofrecido, destacan temas como los siguientes: demografía histórica, paleografía, corrientes historiográficas contemporáneas, la aplicación de la informática a la metodología histórica, etc. También promueve y auspicia tertulias y conferencias. Colaboración con el Departamento de Historia y otras instituciones El Centro apoya las investigaciones de los profesores y estudiantes del Departamento de Historia y otras unidades del sistema universitario, ofreciéndoles orientación sobre el importante acervo documental que custodia y proveyéndoles espacio y equipo para la consulta. Asimismo, está atento a la adquisición de fuentes que puedan ser útiles para los temas de tesis y proyectos de investigación que trabajan los usuarios. Colabora

    Abarca, Apolonia “Polly” Muñoz (1920– )

    COLLAZO, ROSA CORTÉZ (1904–1988) Rosa Cortéz Collazo was a native of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, but moved to New York City in 1925. Employed in a hat factory, hardships and difficult economic times led Collazo to become politically active. She joined the Club Caborrojeño; two years later she was a member of Club Obrero Español, a more radical labor oriented organization. She joined the New York cell of the Nationalist Party in 1937 following the Ponce Massacre in Puerto Rico. After one failed marriage, she wed Oscar Collazo one of two Nationalists who attacked Blair House in 1950 in an attempt to kill President Harry Truman. His compatriot and a White House guard died in the attack and Collazo was tried and sentenced to death. Accused of collaboration to overthrow the government, Rosa was sent to the Women’s House of Detention. Upon release, she successfully campaigned on her husband’s behalf, demanding that his sentence be commuted to life. In 1954 when Puerto Rican Nationalists opened fire in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rosa Collazo was again imprisoned, serving six years in in the Federal Correctional Institution for Women in Alderson, West Virginia. Joined by Dolores (Lolita) Lebrón, one of four Nationalists convicted of the attack against the U.S. Congress, the women found spiritual comfort. In 1977 now living in Puerto Rico, Rosa was part of a campaign to free the Nationalists held in U.S. prisons. Two years later President Jimmy Carter pardoned them, and Rosa flew to Kansas City to greet Oscar. Their separation of twenty-nine years eventually eroded the marriage.

    A Radical Journal of Geography San Juan, the Fragile City: Finance Capital, Class, and the Making of Puerto Rico’s Economic Crisis Joaquın Villanueva1 Department of Geography, Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint Peter, MN, USA; [email protected] Martın Cobian 2 Anthropology, CUNY Graduate Center, New York, NY, USA Felix Rodrıguez3 El Local de Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico Abstract: This paper narrates Puerto Rico’s fiscal and financial crisis through a reading of San Juan’s urban landscape. We underscore the role of capital in the city, primarily embodied by the local capitalist class (the Criollo bloc) and foreign capitalists. Histori- cally excluded from the manufacturing sector (dominated by US capitalists), the Criollo bloc accumulates its wealth by concentrating financial assets in the city. In times of cri- sis, the Criollo bloc resorts to the acquisition of new assets and asset exchange with for- eign capitalists to remain solvent and provide short-term solutions to the state’s fiscal and financial limits. The survival of the local capitalist class, we demonstrate, is depen- dent on asset stripping. Drawing on Clyde Woods, we document how asset stripping unevenly redistributes wealth and risks along class and racial lines within a colonial economy. The finance capital/asset stripping basis of San Juan’s economy renders it an extremely fragile city, we contend. Its fragility was in full display as two devastating hurricanes in the fall 2017—Irma and Marıa—tore through the Island,1 further weakening the fragile economic, social and infrastructural net- works that supported the city.

Y aquí nos transporta el poeta a los campos metafisicos de la ontología : que informa del ser en sí. Platón en El sofista, trata extensamente la existencia del no-ser, contradiciendo a Parménides: Forastero: Aquel que declare que existe la falsedad tiene la audacia de proponer el ser del no-ser; puesto que esto se supone en la posibili- dad de la falsedad. Ante lo cual exclama Teetetes: ¡En que rara complicación de ser o no ser nos hemos envuelto! Prosigue Platón a explicar la esencia del ser: Forastero: Mi noción sería que cualquier cosa que posea poder para afectar a otra o de ser afectada por otra -aunque sea por un instante- VII por muy leve que sea la causa o por insignificante que sea el efecto, tiene existencia real, por lo que sostengo que la definición de ser es sencilla- mente poder.

Ford Dean of the College: Salvatore Attardo Dean of Graduate Studies: Arlene Horne iii Copyright © 2015 Manuel Antonio Grajales II iv ABSTRACT TRANSNATIONAL FREEDOM MOVEMENTS: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN LEAGUE FOR PUERTO RICO INDEPENDENCE, 1944-1950 Manuel Grajales, MA Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2015 Advisor: Jessica Brannon-Wranosky, PhD A meeting in 1943 between Puerto Rican nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos and a group of U.S. pacifists initiated a relationship built on shared opposition to global imperialism. The association centered on the status of Puerto Rico as a colonial possession of the United States. The nationalists argued that Puerto Rico the island’s definition as a U.S. possession violated their sovereignty and called for aggressive resistance against the United States after attempting to initiate change through the electoral process in 1930. Campos developed his brand of nationalism through collaborations with independence activists from India and Ireland while a student at Harvard. Despite the Puerto Rican nationalists’ rhetorically aggressive stance against U.S. imperialism, conversation occurred with groups of Americans who disapproved of their country’s imperial objective.

Mas ninguno de estos elemen- tos primitivos [arquetipos] pueden ser definidos, sólo pueden ser nombrados (...) por lo tanto dichos elemen- tos o letras son sólo objetos de percepción y no pueden ser definidos o conocidos, mas las sílabas o la combina- VII ción de las mismas son conocidas y expresadas y apren- didas por la opinión verdadera.
