Oyster cards are a plastic card with an electronic chip embedded in them. Tickets or prepay can be electronically loaded on to the card which when placed correctly on validators operate the automatic gates on Underground stations and within the zones. Oyster cards are issued subject to (TfL) Conditions of Carriage.

Pay As You Go (PAYG)

‘Pay As You Go’ is a method of paying for single journeys on all Transport for London services and some National Rail Services. A monetary value is added to the Oyster card and then the customer must correctly place the Oyster card on a card reader at the start and end of their journey. The fare is automatically calculated and deducted from the card balance.

Veterans Concessionary Oyster Card

A Veterans Concessionary Oyster Card allows the card holder unlimited free travel on all Transport for London services and National Rail within the Greater London area. They are issued to veterans who receive a pension under the War Pensions Scheme or are awarded funding under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. These cards can also be issued to war widows and widowers and eligible dependants. They are valid for use by the person bearing the same name as shown on the card. The card must also bear a photo which is a true likeness to the holder. They are not transferable.

Elite Athlete

An Elite Athlete Oyster Card allows the card holder unlimited free travel on Transport for London Services and National Rail within the Greater London area. They are valid for use by the person bearing the same name as shown on the card. The card will also bear a photo which is a true likeness to the holder. Any ‘Gold’ ranked athlete from the BOA Passport Scheme will qualify for the Elite Athletes Oyster photocard. Gold Athletes may be under 16. The Elite Athletes Oyster photocard will only be valid for a maximum of one year at a time and will expire on the date shown on the reverse of the card. They are not transferable.

New Deal

New Deal cards are issued by the Employment Services to persons seeking employment. They are issued for a maximum period of three months and are stamped with the expiry date. They entitle the holder to purchase child rate single and return tickets or a discounted season ticket, up to and including the expiry date of the photocard. The photocard number must be endorsed on any 7 day or longer discounted ticket purchased to confirm the holders’ eligibility. The photocard must be carried on all journeys as per the Conditions of Carriage. They are not entitled to buy Child One Day .

Older Persons

An Older Persons Freedom Pass allows the pass holder unlimited travel at anytime on all Transport for London services, most National Rail services within the Greater London area after 09.30 and bus services outside of London. They are issued free of charge to persons over 60 by the London Borough in which they reside. They are valid for a maximum period of 5 years. The pass will bear the holders name and a picture, which bears true likeness to the pass holder. They are not transferable.

Disabled Persons Freedom Pass

A Disabled persons Freedom Pass allows the pass holder unlimited travel on all Transport for London services and most National Rail services within the Greater London area. The disabled persons pass also allows free travel on buses outside of London. They are issued free of charge to disabled persons by the London Borough in which they reside. They are valid for a maximum period of 5 years. The pass will bear the holders name and a picture which bears a true likeness to the pass holder. They are not transferable.

Discretionary London-only Disabled persons pass

A Discretionary London-only Disabled persons Freedom Pass allows the pass holder unlimited travel on all Transport for London services and most National Rail services within the Greater London area. This pass is not valid outside of the Greater London area. They are issued free of charge to disabled persons outside of the statutory categories of eligibility by the London Borough in which they reside. They are valid for a maximum period of 5 years. The pass will bear the holders name and a picture which bears a true likeness to the pass holder. They are not transferable.

TfL Bearer Passes

The Tfl Bearer pass is only valid according to the information and expiry date on an accompanying Bearer pass photocard. It is not valid for leisure or domestic purposes. The Serial number at the top of the pass must correspond with the serial number written on the photocard. The Tfl Bearer photocard is valid for a maximum of 6 months with a corresponding Tfl Bearer pass. This pass is not transferable.

Contractor Pass

The contractor pass is for use only. It is valid according to the information and expiry date on the accompanying photocard. It is not valid for leisure or domestic purposes. The serial number at the top of the pass must correspond with the serial number recorded on the photocard. The London Underground photocard is valid for a maximum of 6 months with a corresponding London Underground Contractor pass. This pass is not transferable.

Oyster Staff Card

Oyster staff cards are issued to all Transport for London (TfL) employees to enable the named holder to travel free of charge on Transport for London services and certain National Rail services. This pass must be supported by a staff photocard of the holder. This Oyster staff card is not transferable and becomes invalid if the member of staff leaves the organisation.

Oyster Staff Nominee Card

An Oyster staff nominee card is issued by Transport for London (TfL) companies to an individual, nominated by a staff member. It enables the named holder to travel free of charge on Transport for London services and certain National Rail services. The card must be supported by a nominee photocard of the holder. This Oyster nominee card is not transferable and becomes invalid if the member of staff leaves the organisation or the nominee is no longer entitled to use it.

Oyster Retired Staff Card

Oyster Retired staff cards are issued to staff who are over 50 years of age and have retired from TFL after at least 20 years service. They are also issued to nominees of the retired pass holder. They can be used by the named holder to travel free of charge on Transport for London services and certain National Rail services. This pass must be supported by a staff photocard of the holder. This Oyster Retired staff card is not transferable.

Bus Operator Oyster Card

Bus Operator Oyster cards are issued by Transport for London (TfL) to employees of Bus Operating companies working on behalf of TfL. It enables the named holder to travel free of charge on Transport for London services and certain National Rail services. This pass must be supported by a Bus Operator staff photocard of the holder. This Bus Operator Oyster staff card is not transferable and becomes invalid if the member of staff leaves the Bus Operating Company.

Bus Operator Nominee Oyster Card

A Bus Operator Nominee Oyster card is issued by Transport for London (TfL) to an individual nominated by an employee of a Bus Operating company working on behalf of TfL. It enables the named holder to travel free of charge on Transport for London services and certain National Rail services. The card must be supported by a Bus Operator nominee photocard of the holder. This Oyster nominee card is not transferable and becomes invalid if the member of staff leaves the Bus Operating Company or the nominee is no longer entitled to use it.

Single

A single ticket is for one journey from the station it was purchased to any station at the fare shown or, to the station explicitly named on the ticket. A journey cannot be broken (by leaving at an intermediate station and rejoining at a later time). A single ticket is valid on the day of issue only and is valid via any reasonable route.

Return

A return ticket is for a journey from the station it was purchased to any station at the fare shown or, to/from the station explicitly named on the ticket and a second journey returning to the originating station at a later time. A journey cannot be broken (by leaving at an intermediate station and rejoining at a later time). A return ticket is valid on the day of issue only and is valid via any reasonable route.

Bus Pass

A Bus pass allows unlimited journeys on the entire and Croydon network for the date shown or between the start date and end date on 7 day or longer passes. They are not valid on London Underground or .

Day (Off-Peak)

An Off Peak Travelcard allows multiple journeys within the zones purchased (not via any other zones) after 9.30am Monday to Friday and anytime at weekends and bank holidays for the day indicated. They are available for use on all Transport for London services and National Rail covered within the required zones. They are not transferable.

Day Travelcard (Peak)

A Peak Day Travelcard allows multiple journeys within the zones purchased (not via any other zone) at any time for the day indicated. They are available for use on Transport for London services and National Rail covered within the required zones. They are not transferable.

Period Travelcard

Weekly or longer Travelcards allow multiple journeys within the zones purchased (not via any other zones) on all Transport for London services and National Rail within the correct zones. These tickets are not transferable.

Child Rate Magnetic Tickets - available to children aged 5 to 15 inclusive

Child rate singles, returns, one day Travelcards on magnetic (paper) tickets can be purchased without a photocard for use by children aged 5-15 where necessary. The tickets are not transferable.

5-11 Oyster Photocard (Zip)

A Transport for London (TfL) 5-11 Oyster photocard allows the named holder to travel free on London Underground, Docklands Light Railway and services free of charge without being accompanied by an adult. The Oyster photocard is not transferable.

11-15 Oyster Photocard (Zip)

A Transport for London (TfL) 11-15 Oyster photocard allows the named holder to travel at a reduced rate on London Underground, Docklands Light Railway and London Overground services. It also entitles the holder to purchase child rate Travelcard season tickets. This Oyster photocard is not transferable.

16+ Oyster Photocard (Zip)

A Transport for London (TfL) 16+ Oyster photocard allows the named holder to travel at half the adult rate on London Underground services. It also entitles the holder to purchase Travelcard season tickets at half the adult rate. This Oyster photocard is not transferable.

18+ Oyster Photocard

An 18+ Oyster photocard allows the named holder to purchase a discount rate season Travelcard. Pay as you go journeys and travel beyond the availability of any season ticket held, will be charged at the adult rate. The student has to attend a college or university that has joined the scheme and the Oyster Photocard is obtained by the student completing an application and their eligibility verified by the establishment they attend. The card will also bear a photo which will be a true likeness to the holder. These are not transferable.

Young Persons (16 -25) Railcard

A Young Persons (16 -25) Railcard allows the named holder to purchase discounted tickets to travel on National Railways and London Underground. The railcard has either a photograph on the railcard or accompanying photograph showing a picture of the holder. Tickets purchased using the railcard are not transferable and the railcard (and Phohotocard if applicable) must be carried to validate the ticket at all times.

Disabled Person Railcard

A Disabled Person Railcard allows the named holder to purchase a Child One Day Travelcard to travel on National Railways and London Underground. The railcard has either a photograph on the railcard or accompanying photograph showing a picture of the holder. Tickets purchased using the railcard are not transferable and the railcard (and Photocard if applicable) must be carried at all times to validate the ticket at all times. A Disabled person may purchase a child One Day Travelcard for another if they are acting as an escort for the disabled person and must travel with the railcard holder at all times.

Network Railcard

A allows the named holder to purchase discounted tickets to travel on National Railways and London Underground. The railcard holder can purchase tickets for themselves and up to three other adults and four children at the discounted rate. Tickets purchased using the railcard are not transferable. The railcard holder must carry the railcard and at all times and be with the other ticket holders of tickets purchased using the railcard to validate the tickets at all times.

Forces Railcard

A Forces Railcard allows the named holder (who is a member of HM armed forces) to purchase discounted tickets to travel on National Railways and London Underground. The railcard has either a photograph on the railcard or accompanying photograph showing a picture of the holder. Tickets purchased using the railcard are not transferable and the railcard (and photocard if applicable) must be carried at all times to validate the ticket at all times.

Friends and Family Railcard

A Friends and Family Railcard allows the named holder to purchase discounted tickets to travel on National Railways and London Underground. Each railcard can be issued in two names and discounted tickets can be purchased by one named holder and up to three other adults and four children. Tickets purchased using the railcard are not transferable. The railcard holder must carry the railcard and at all times and be with the other ticket holders of tickets purchased using the railcard to validate the tickets at all times.

Ticket Office Printout (Oystercards)

A Ticket Office Machine (TOM) printout is generated from a London Underground Ticket Office. This printout details the most recent journeys made within the Transport for London Zonal system when it is presented onto an Oyster card validator. It will also show the last incomplete journey made and recent Pay As You Go top ups. It also details when Travelcards have been loaded onto it. It also shows any type of discount loaded onto the Oyster card. This printout is obtained from a person trained in the use of the ticket office machine, and no amendments are made to it after its compilation.

Ticket Office Print Out (Magnetic Ticket)

A ticket office machine print out is generated from a London Underground ticket office. It details the date, time and location at which a magnetic strip paper ticket was last used to operate an automatic ticket barrier, to enter or exit a London Underground or National Rail station. The print out is generated by a person trained in the use of the and no amendments are made to it after its completion.

Psion Swipe Master

The Psion Swipe master is a hand held device used to read the magnetic strip on the rear of paper tickets. At the start of my duty, I checked the functionality of my Psion Swipe master, which was working normally, and it has continued to function in full working order since. I have received training and am competent in its use.

Movie Unit

The ‘Movie’ unit is a device used to read and display recent journeys and ticket details recorded on Oyster cards. At the start of my duty, I checked the functionality of my Movie unit, which was working normally, and it has continued to function in full working order since. I have received training and am competent in its use.

Gate Permit

A Gate Permit is used by TFL staff to operate the entry and exit gates on TFL stations. It is operable for approximately 36 months and is not valid for travel. It is not supplied to members of the public to use.
