United States Department of Agriculture Maintaining and Improving Habitat for Hummingbirds in Oklahoma and Texas A Land Manager’s Guide Forest Service National Headquarters Introduction Hummingbirds play an important role in the food web, pollinating a variety of flowering plants, some of which are specifically adapted to pollination by hummingbirds. Some hummingbirds are at risk, like other pollinators, due to habitat loss, changes in the distribution and abundance of nectar plants (which are affected by climate change), the spread of invasive Anna’s Hummingbird Nest plants, and pesticide use. While hummingbirds, like all birds, have the basic habitat needs of food, water, shelter, and space, this guide is focused on providing food—the plants that provide nectar for hummingbirds. Because climate, geology, and vegetation vary widely in different areas, specific recommenda- tions are presented for each ecoregion in Oklahoma and Texas. (See the Ecoregions in Oklahoma and Texas section, below.) This guide also provides brief descriptions of the species that visit Oklahoma and Texas, as well as some basic information about hummingbird habitat needs. Whether you’re involved in managing public or private lands, large acreages or small areas, you can make them attractive to our native hummingbirds. Even long, narrow pieces of habitat, like utility corridors, field edges, and roadsides, can provide important connections among larger habitat areas. AoB PLANTS 10: ply008; doi: 10.1093/aobpla/ply008 Abstract. The generation of plant diversity involves complex interactions between geography, environment and organismal traits. Many macroevolutionary processes and emergent patterns have been identified in different plant groups through the study of spatial data, but rarely in the context of a large radiation of tropical herbaceous angio- sperms. A powerful system for testing interrelated biogeographical hypotheses is provided by the terrestrial brome- liads, a Neotropical group of extensive ecological diversity and importance. In this investigation, distributional data for 564 species of terrestrial bromeliads were used to estimate variation in the position and width of species-level hydrological habitat occupancy and test six core hypotheses linking geography, environment and organismal traits. Taxonomic groups and functional types differed in hydrological habitat occupancy, modulated by convergent and di- vergent trait evolution, and with contrasting interactions with precipitation abundance and seasonality. Plant traits in the Bromeliaceae are intimately associated with bioclimatic differentiation, which is in turn strongly associated with variation in geographical range size and species richness. -

YUCCA, SOTOL and NOLINA Variety Sheet YUCCA SIZE ZONE DESCRIPTION This adaptable Yucca grows in full sun to light, filtered shade and can grow to 10' tall Yucca rostrata/Beaked Yucca 10' x 5' Zone 5 and 3' wide. Its blue-green narrow leaves end in a sharp terminal spine. It is a slow to moderate grower and is cold hardy to -20° F. Yucca pendula (recurvifolia) Soft Named for its graceful, bending blue-green leaves, Soft Leaf Yucca is adaptable to sun 6' x 6' Zone 7 Leaf Yucca or shade. Tall white blooms tower above the plant in the summer. This low clumping yucca can eventually form wide clumps with up to 30 heads. Tall Yucca pallida/Pale Leaf Yucca 1'-2' x 1'-3' Zone 6 flower stalks with pure white bell-shaped floweres are produced in the late spring. Twistleaf Yucca is native to Central Texas. This low-growing Yucca tolerates full sun to Yucca rupicola/Twistleaf Yucca 2' x 2-3' Zone 6 shade. It produces 5' spikes of creamy-white flowers in the summer. This trunk-forming Yucca can reach 12' tall. The powder-blue leaves have yellow Yucca rigida/Blue Yucca 12' x 8' Zone 6 margins and are fairly rigid. It thrives in well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Yucca filamentosa 'Color This heat and drought tolerant Yucca grows in full to part sun. The green and yellow 2'-3' x2'-3' Zone 4 Guard'/Color Guard Yucca striped leaves add accent color to the landscape. This low-growing Yucca has stiff sword-shaped leaves with a green center and yellow Yucca flaccida 'Bright Edge'/Bright 2' x 2' Zone 4 margins. -

The native plant garden in front of the White Sands National Monument Visitor Center provides a tiny sample of the many plants that form the unique Chihuahuan Desert landscape.
