Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México, Distrito Federal, Mexico 3Author for correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: The most prominent vegetation type in the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, is Chihuahuan Desert Scrub. This plant formation encompasses the little known Dasylirion cedrosanum (sotol) rosette scrub, a community that extends over more than one fourth of Coahuila and whose most distinctive species is subjected to intense extraction from its native communities for a variety of purposes. Based on a highly replicated sampling procedure that included 131 plots located in the state’s central and southern portions, we analyzed vegetation structure, fl oristics, and species diversity of this plant community. A cluster analysis allowed us to differentiate fi ve variants (associations) of the Dasylirion cedrosanum rosette scrub, which together host a richness of 97 species of vascular plants distributed in 61 genera and 28 families. These communities occurred across an elevational range of 850-2,550 m a.s.l. Dasylirion cedrosanum density varied between 193 and 705 ind./ha, with the highest value occurring in the Quercus intricata-Dasylirion cedrosanum association. Other prominent species in these scrublands were Agave lecheguilla and Euphorbia antisyphilitica. The Agave lecheguilla-Dasylirion cedrosanum association was the most broadly distributed and it hosted the highest richness species, while the largest Shannon diversity index value was recorded for the Dasylirion cedrosanum- Viguiera greggii association. -

A two year project to compile and prepare status assessments for 12 rare Texas plant species, which are under status review by USFWS, and prepare the data for entry into the TXNDD. Segment Objectives: Task 1. (Sep 2012 – June 2014) Hard copy and electronic species information maintained by TXNDD, TPWD botanists, and other relevant sources (federal botanists, NGOs, private consultants, academicians and others) will be acquired. Task 2. (Oct 2012 – July 2014) Acquired information will be analyzed for pertinent data. Information will be sorted into two reference categories: general species data (e.g. genetics, habitat, threats) and population-specific data (e.g. sites, survey data). Population-specific data for new records as well as updated information for pre-existing records will be synthesized and given to TXNDD for extraction by TXNDD staff at a later date. All references will be scanned and electronically archived or shelved in the TXNDD reference library. -

Taxonomía y Florística La familia Bromeliaceae en México ADOLFO ESPEJO-SERNA Y ANA ROSA LÓPEZ-FERRARI Botanical Sciences 96 (3): 533-554, 2018 Resumen Antecedentes: Las Bromeliaceae mexicanas han despertado el interés de los botánicos desde 1789; su DOI: 10.17129/botsci.1918 estudio sistemático inició a partir de la década de los setenta del siglo pasado, contando actualmente con Recibido: avances significativos en su conocimiento taxonómico-florístico. 21 de noviembre de 2017 Pregunta: ¿Cuántas y cuáles especies de Bromeliaceae se presentan en México? ¿Cómo están distribuidas y cuántas son endémicas? Aceptado: México, 1887-2017. 9 de mayo de 2018 Sitio de estudio: Métodos: Con base en el estudio de las Bromeliaceae de México, incluyendo recolecciones botánicas, Editor asociado: revisión de literatura y consulta, cotejo y determinación de ejemplares en 50 herbarios nacionales y extran- Guillermo Ibarra Manriquez jeros, se obtuvieron datos sobre riqueza, endemismo y distribución de sus representantes en el país. Resultados: En México están representadas cuatro de las ocho subfamilias de Bromeliaceae, 19 géneros, 422 especies y 8 taxones infraespecíficos. Los géneros más ricos en especies son Tillandsia (230/54.5 %), Hechtia (71/16.8 %) y Pitcairnia (50/11.8 %). Trescientas dieciocho especies, así como los géneros Ur- sulaea y Viridantha, son endémicos de México; 172 especies son microendémicas. La entidad con más taxones es Oaxaca, seguida por Chiapas, Veracruz y Guerrero y las que cuentan con menor representación son Tlaxcala y Baja California Sur. Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Ciudad de México, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tabasco y Tlaxcala no tienen taxones endémicos estrictos. Conclusión: Aunque el avance del conocimiento de las Bromeliaceae mexicanas ha sido constante, to- davía se requiere de trabajo de exploración y recolección en algunas regiones del país, antes de concluir la flora Bromeliológica Mexicana. -

AoB PLANTS 10: ply008; doi: 10.1093/aobpla/ply008 Abstract. The generation of plant diversity involves complex interactions between geography, environment and organismal traits. Many macroevolutionary processes and emergent patterns have been identified in different plant groups through the study of spatial data, but rarely in the context of a large radiation of tropical herbaceous angio- sperms. A powerful system for testing interrelated biogeographical hypotheses is provided by the terrestrial brome- liads, a Neotropical group of extensive ecological diversity and importance. In this investigation, distributional data for 564 species of terrestrial bromeliads were used to estimate variation in the position and width of species-level hydrological habitat occupancy and test six core hypotheses linking geography, environment and organismal traits. Taxonomic groups and functional types differed in hydrological habitat occupancy, modulated by convergent and di- vergent trait evolution, and with contrasting interactions with precipitation abundance and seasonality. Plant traits in the Bromeliaceae are intimately associated with bioclimatic differentiation, which is in turn strongly associated with variation in geographical range size and species richness. These results emphasize the ecological relevance of structural-functional innovation in a major plant radiation. -

Robinson is reinterpreted. The taxonomic status of three species, H. bracteata Mez (syn. H. confusa L.B. Smith), H. texensis L.B. Smith (syns. H. elliptica L.B. Smith and H. zacatacae L.B. Smith), and H. glomerata (syn. H. mexicana L.B. Smith), are evaluated. Hechtia tehuacana B.L.
