A checklist of the 24 genera and 364 native species ofBromeliaceae known from Venezuela is presented, including their occurrence by state and indications of which are endemic to the country. A comparison of the number of genera and species known from Mesoamerica (southern Mexico to Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), Ecuador, and Peru is presented, as well as a summary of the number of species and endemic species in each Venezuelan state. RESUMEN. Se presenta un listado de los 24 generos y 364 especies nativas de Bromeliaceae que se conocen de Venezuela, junto con sus distribuciones por estado y una indicaci6n cuales son endemicas a Venezuela. Se presenta tambien una comparaci6n del numero de los generos y especies de Mesoamerica (sur de Mexico a Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, las Guayanas (Guyana, Suriname, Guyana Francesa), Ecuador, y Peru, y un resumen del numero de especies y numero de especies endemicas de cada estado de Venezuela. Abstract An updated inventory of the Bromeliaceae for Costa Rica is presented including citations of representa- tive specimens for each species. The family comprises 18 genera and 198 species in Costa Rica, 32 spe- cies being endemic to the country. Additional 36 species are endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Only 4 of the 8 bromeliad subfamilies occur in Costa Rica, with a strong predominance of Tillandsioideae (7 genera/150 spp.; 75.7% of all bromeliad species in Costa Rica). -

Rodriguésia 66(2): A1-A66. 2015 http://rodriguesia.jbrj.gov.br DOI: 10.1590/2175-7860201566228 An overview and abstracts of the First World Congress on Bromeliaceae Evolution Ana Maria Benko-Iseppon, Marccus Alves & Rafael Louzada Abstracts of the Conferences, Symposia, Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations performed during the 1st World Congress on Bromeliaceae Evolution, March 2015 (Brazil): Reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves of Guzmania monostachia plants under water deficit Abreu, Maria Elizabeth1; Carvalho, Victória2 & Mercier, Helenice1 CAM plants have the capacity to deal with highly changing environments due to the flexibility of reversible morphological and physiological adaptations to multiple stresses. However, little is known about the signalling pathway of ROS in plants with CAM metabolism, other than the knowledge that ROS production is limited in CAM plants. In the present study, we assessed the effects of drought stress on reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities in leaf portions of Guzmania monostachia. The exposure of G. monostachia plants to 10 days of water deficit led to a decrease in the leaf relative water content (RWC) from 75% to 50% in all leaf portions (apical, middle and basal); hence, it was concluded that plants subjected to drought produced higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when compared with control plants. Significant variations to the formation of ROS were also identified in all leaf portions during the diurnal cycle. After ten days of CAM induction, H2O2 concentration increased significantly in contrast to control plants during the day-night cycle. In addition, the activity of antioxidant enzymes in processes related to the elimination of ROS was also evaluated. -

January Meeting John Olsen opened the meeting at 7:30pm. Apologies to Norma Poole in January 2013 Newsletter Norma entered Aechmea orlandiana in the Novice competition and was placed 2nd. Not Betty Sheppard. Our apologies to both contestants, but this was not Fred’s fault. John welcomes Charles Birdsong from Baton Rouge and Michelle Casey. John declared the AGM opened and the minutes approved. The President’s full report will be in the next issue of Bromeliaceae. The financial statement was presented by the Treasurer. John thanked his committee for 2012 for their help – Bruce Dunstan and Bob Cross will not be nominating for the committee this year. Bob Cross has been a committee member for 35years. A big thank you was given to both of these members for their commitment to the society. John also thanked all the volunteers and hoped they would be with us again this year. EENY161 Mexican Bromeliad Weevil (suggested common name), Metamasius callizona (Chevrolat) (Insecta: Coleoptera: Curculionidae)1 Barba Larson and J. Howard Frank2 Barber, the smallest of the three and native to Florida, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, has been collected in Florida infrequently. Unlike Metamasius callizona, its presence does not threaten populations of native bromeli- ads in Florida’s natural areas. The third species, Metamasius hempipterus sericeus (Olivier), was first reported in Florida in Miami-Dade County in 1984 and has since become an important pest of sugarcane, bananas, and ornamental palms. BROMELIAD SOCIETY OF SAN FRANCISCO JANUARY 2018 Meeting Specifics When: Thursday, January 18 Costa Rica with Ben Harink Time: 07:30 PM Recreation Room Ben will be talking about a three-week trip he made to Costa Rica. This Where: San Francisco County Fair was a family vacation, but Ben did get a lot of time to actually spend in nature and look for plants, and also came across many bromeliads. His Building talk will focus on these, but as there have been many other interesting 9th Avenue at Lincoln Way plant and wildlife encounters, he will include these as well. Costa Rica is an easily accessible country, and seeing plants and animals has been San Francisco easier than in most countries that Ben has visited so far. Ben Harink has been fascinated by plants and animals since childhood and had already assembled a good-sized collection of tillandsias while still a youth in Germany. Ben later began rearing insects as a hobby while living there. He has traveled extensively and lived in several other countries in the past, including Switzerland and India. Ben has been a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for the past four years where he developed an interest in growing bromeliads from seed, especially species of Tillandsia and Pitcairnia.
